Pulling a Dellucci

by Jonas Fortune on February 24, 2009 - 4:10 pm

Cleveland Indians outfielder Dave Dellucci is about a week behind his teammates this spring training. The reason?

Dellucci slammed his thumb in the gate of his truck while packing for Arizona. What could you really expect from Dellucci?

Just loading up his truck is more production than the injury-prone outfielder has given the Indians during the duration of his three-year, $11.5 million contract that will come off the books at the end of the season.

Over the last two seasons Dellucci has played the equivalent of one season (514 at bats) and has had around a .230 batting average with 15 homers and roughly a 300 OBP. Bearable numbers for a platoon outfielder, but not at $11.5 million for three years.

Dellucci will make $4 million this season, according to Cot’s Baseball Contracts.

Dellucci’s numbers from the last two seasons:

169 games
514 at bats
121 hits
15 homers
67 RBI
116 strikeouts
41 BB

Just wanna point out, Delucci was signed on the recommendation of “Tribe advisor” Buck Showalter, who obviously had ambitions of replacing Eric Wedge. He got a lesson in Shapiro Loyalty, and fled the building…but certainly not without saddling Cleveland with the most mediocre outfielder since Tommy Smith or Leron Lee. Thanks, Buck! Your talent evaluation speaks for itself.

It’s no wonder the Yankees and Diamondbacks both won championships the year after Buck was shown the door. And I know the consensus is to knock Wedge, but I’ll take him day and night over tired retreads like Showalter.

delucci should be paying the tribe! The batboys have given more production.

I would point out that slamming your thumb in a truck gate is an accident. Whoever is accident-free, let him cast the first stone.

I’m sure when he signed, he made sure his contract read “platoon outfielder only”, he purposely blew out his leg, and lest we forget, he was the only member of the offense who struggled last year…

Amen rayy…

“elizabeth: he purposely blew out his leg”
Wow he purposely did this? Now this is amazing to get it just right to pull the hamstring, go through all that PAIN, be put on the DL and then have REQUIRED surgery to remove a torn tendon from the hamstring, all that so he wouldn’t have to play, Huh.

“elizabeth: and lest we forget, he was the only member of the offense who struggled last year”
The only one??? I don’t think we were watching the same team cause I seem to recall at different parts of the season MOST of the team struggled to name a couple Gutierrez, Marte, and lets see Cabrera was sent back to the minors.
Hey! maybe Hafner blew out his shoulder, Barfield his Finger, Martinez his hamstring and elbow purposely so they too wouldn’t have to play then be put on the DL and wait REQUIRE surgery too. All these on purpose blow outs are amazing.

It is not impossible to smash a thumb in the tailgate of a pickup truck, I have seen it, if one side doesn’t latch properly then most people go to that side and slam it, and if your hand slips or is in the wrong spot it can and will get hurt. I have to agree if you have never been hurt, then maybe your bubble is way to thick. I think if he could get locked in he could do very well this season and he knows he hasn’t lived up to the expectations of the team, fans or himself he has said that. Personally I don’t believe he is the only one who should be slammed on, it’s not like he is the only one on the team…

JMO!!!
