Vizquel signs deal with Rangers

by Jonas Fortune on January 22, 2009 - 3:06 pm

Former Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel is officially a member of the Texas Rangers, well sort of.

Vizquel has signed a minor league contract with the Rangers and will be invited to Spring training. Vizquel is expected to be the insurance policy should 20-year-old prospect Elvis Andrus struggle in his first major league season. Gold Glove shortstop Michael Young has already been asked to move to third to make room for Andrus.

Vizquel, 42, will more than likely be the utility infielder for the Rangers. If Vizquel makes the team he is set to have a base salary of one million with potential for incentives.

San Francisco Gate columnist Bruce Jenkins gives his thoughts on the situation here.
