Channel 4 San Diego’s Emmy winning sports reporter John Weisbarth reported yesterday former Indian short stop Omar Vizquel could join the San Diego Padres as soon as today.
Vizquel didn’t hit much last year for the San Francisco Giants, but his Gold Glove defensive hasn’t slipped much at all.
No word yet if Vizquel will begin an Omar Y’Amigos kids club at Petco Park.

Gotta disagree with our fearless leader Jonah here. John McDonald was a better defensive SS the last two years Omar was in Cleveland. OV will never be a bad defensive player, but the range and arm that delighted us during the glory days of the 90’s are long gone. Combined with a rather anemic bat, the Padres would be better off staying with Luis Rodriguez or snapping up…oh I don’t know….how about John McDonald!
That said, let me make a statement and a prediction….Omar Vizquel should be an easy pick for the HOF. The prediction is that he will get hosed ala’ so many other deserving candidates.

I agree with the writer re. the comparison to John McDonald, but the Johnny Mac comparison is no longer apt. Rather, it should be with Khalil Greene, as overrated a shortstop as money can buy. I think Padres fans happy will be happy with this change of personnel, even though Omar will be eight years away from AARP membership.
I agree, too, with Omar’s worthiness for the Hall of Fame, though I don’t know that voters will see it that way. Who knows?
with all the roid boys eligible to go into the hall i think omar will be a breath of fresh air. i think he’s in.
terje…..a lot of little guys (and pitchers) were juicing too. Growing massive muscles and hitting home runs isn’t the only desired result. I’m not saying Omar juiced, but it wouldn’t be shocking if he did, and I certainly wouldn’t cast suspicion on every long ball hitter who got bigger. Some just worked very hard in the gym.
i agree btl05. but omar never started hitting home runs like brady anderson. and brady anderson can talk to me all day about his diet and plyometrics but i’ll never believe a word of it. just like trav and his new “diet”. i’m not buying that either.
