Cleveland Browns: Was There Anything Good Against the Steelers?
Posted September 10th, 2007 by George Thomas
So a colleague and myself were discussing the Browns' performance in the pressbox yesterday.
I don't know whether I'm a glass half full guy or what. Actually, I generally tend to think of myself as more of realist than anything. But I suggested that yesterday's opening day meltdown ensuring that the Dallas Cowboys will get a top five pick in next year's draft wouldn't have been too bad on the defensive end of the ball.
So those of you who actually read this tell me: what did you see on the defensive side of the ball?
Was there reason to be optimistic? If so, did the offense just put the D in such a bad place that they were bound to come out in the second half and look like a pack of mangy mutts? Or were they equally culpable for the loss?

Yes, they really, really, really sucked, but it's just one game. There's 15 games left. That top-five Cowboys pick ain't a certainty yet.
I said on the very day Cowher announced he was quitting the Steelers that he's going to be the Browns coach in 2008. I still believe that. But with that being said, it was still Game 1.
By the way, what were Thomas' stats? No, not you, I'm talking about the overhyped white guy on the offensive line. Did he give up any of those 56 sacks?

George, like you said the defense was behind the 8-ball from the get-go, because of the offense. The defense was not addressed in the offseason, supposedly the offense was. Not to say that the D performed well, but the offense didn't bother to show up. There is room for optimism because (hopefully) they can't be worse than that (tounge in cheek)
George, on a completely different note, keep up the good work. You are the only reason I keep my ABJ supscription and why I log on to Ohio.com.

I also enjoy the commentary from Larry D. and Tucker(don't freak out people)

That's alan t. to you, Johnny. Or Mr. alan t., if you prefer. Please, respect your elders.
My question, even more than my mention that there's 16 games in a season and the panic-stricken folks, including media folks, are having premature cerebral hemorrhages and strokes, is who was this "colleague" that was chatting it up in the pressbox? I'm interested.
George: "Yo. Stephen A. I heard about the Inquirer taking away your column. Tough luck, man. That really sucks."
Stephen A. Smith: "WHERE IS THE TABLE WITH THE SANDWICHES? THE GODDAMN HOTEL DIDN'T GIVE ME MY WAKEUP CALL. MY STOMACH IS PLAYING SMOKEY ROBINSON. SHOW ME THE PASTRAMI."

Ummm, sorry Alan. Wasn't Stephen A. It was Pat McManamon.
