Cleveland Browns: Thank God It's Over
Posted December 31st, 2006 by George Thomas
I will go into a greater dissection of this season tomorrow or Tuesday in between time spent preparing for an excursion to Phoenix.
However, I will mention that ESPN's Craig Mortensen reported that if Romeo Crennel wants to keep his job, he's going to have to make so changes in his coaching staff. Gee, ya think?
But do we really believe that's what's wrong with this team to start? As I wrote earlier this week, there are Godzilla sized holes to fill on this team and then beyond that there is an issue of depth. Too many times this since their return, the Browns have been content to fill the frontline with a decent player and then pray that the back-up didn't go down. Ya think Jeff Faine would have looked good filling in for an injured LaCharles Bentley this year?
But as I said, we'll chat more tomorrow. Until then after seeing the debacle in Houston today, I can only say: thank god it's over.

Another celebrity gunned down at 2am, this time a young NFL player. Isn't it just common sense to realize that nothing good comes from being out on the streets after midnight. Hopefully this is a pointed example for young people. And whether they know it or not, players like Braylon Edwards, T.O., Keyshawn, Albert Belle, Shawn Kemp, Koby, Artest, etc. are living-examples for youngsters of how NOT to act. They deserve every negative thing that comes their way in life because of the despicable way they've treated others throughtout their so-called "pro" careers.

Well Reality Check:
Your thinking is so wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to start, but hey, I'm gonna give it a shot anyway.
Are you kidding me? You're going to blame the victim for his shooting death for being out after midnight? Here's a lesson for you. I am 41. I work hard and I deserve a little respite from the day-to-day grind. You know what that means? Sometimes I take in a movie, but other times on weekends, I may actually hit a bar. Yup, a BAR. And you know what, I may even stay there at the BAR sipping on a beer and watching a West Coast game until that establishment's closing time. OH MY!!! Heaven forbid!!! Does that mean that someone has the right to shoot me and it's my fault? I think not. Darrent Williams of the Denver Broncos was 24. I remember exactly what I was like at that age. I was trolling High Street on the campus of the Ohio State University trying to see what bars I could hit. You're young, you blow off steam. Given what happened to the Broncos Sunday AND the fact that it was New Year's Eve, my guess is he needed to blow off a lot of steam. He's entitled and it's no one's damned business, especially given the fact that my initial guess says that he wasn't driving the limousine. No one knows what happened with the Williams incident, but no one should be so hasty in their judgment.
As for athletes being role models, I've talked to plenty even before I worked in sports. That is a choice that is not given to them. If they're superstars it's thrust upon them. They can either take to it or not.
No one deserves any negative thing that happens to them - unless perhaps they hurt someone else. Is boorish behavior tiresome. Yup, it is. And I'm no Terrell Owens or Braylon Edwards fan.
Lastly, get off Kellen Winslow. I'm all for riding athletes for their behavior until they understand what gifts they have, but Winslow, after the year he's had, doesn't come close to making that list. He's learned from his mistakes - a sign of maturity. And the minute you want to tell me that you didn't do something stupid while you were younger and learned from it, I'll be happy to anoint you a saint. Winslow toned down the machismo and let his play on the field speak for him and he deserved Pro Bowl consideration.

Hail Hail! Bravo. I totally agree. I have a tendency to want to hang out once in a while also (whenever we can work out a sitter- so my wife can go out too).. I have a 20 yr old daughter that's an honor student at Kent State. During the holiday's she and her friends (home from school) along with a few athletes, would hang out past midnight. Dont make blanket statements…we don't hold the right to determine who dies, "get's whats coming to them", or jump on the bandwagon with their fate…Let's just continue to try and teach them and from time to time…lead by example.
