KISS FM removes Chris Brown from playlist

by Malcolm Abram on February 10, 2009

in Uncategorized

This is stupid.

News Channel 5 is reporting that Cleveland pop radio station 96.5 KISS has removed all Chris Brown songs from their playlist.

Brown and his (current) girlfriend pop singer Rihanna were both scheduled to perform at the Grammys but their trip was sidetracked by a alleged confrontation that allegedly took place in a car between the two pop stars.

Here's the News Channel 5 report.

Channel 96.5 KISS FM removed the music until further notice.

Brown, 19, was arrested late Sunday night on suspicion of making a criminal threat. He is under investigation for allegedly attacking his girlfriend, 20-year-old singer Rihanna, police said. Rihanna reportedly suffered visible injuries in the alleged physical confrontation in a car.

"After the alleged incident the phones exploded," said evening personality Java Joel. "It's all that people wanted to talk about. They were outraged at this alleged behavior and wondered why we were continuing to support his music. I agreed and immediately pulled all Chris Brown songs from my show until this thing shakes out in the legal system."

"His listeners have strong feelings about these unfortunate events, and he made the decision to take the Chris Brown songs off the radio while he is on the air. I then made the decision to rid the whole station of Chris Brown songs while this plays out," said Program Director Bo Matthews.

Gum-maker Wrigley also suspended its campaign with the R&B singer.

As for Rihanna, her publicist only released a statement saying the singer is "well."

Ok, here's my beef.
If Java Joel and matthews had simply said "listeners say they don't want to hear Chris Brown right now, so we're not going to play him," I would have been OK with that.

But in his own quote Joel uses the word "alleged" a few times so he obviously knows a bit about slander and defamatory statements in terms of the legal system.
Yet they have already taken action against Brown when (unless I missed a news flash) there are literally no confirmed details about the incident other than Brown was arrested. The charge isn't even "domestic violence" or assault but the less specific and physical "suspicion of a criminal threat"

Here's why Java Joel, Bo Matthews and the rest of those KISS FM folks are hypocrites.

In the damn near decade that R. Kelly was on or near trial for having sex with a child (which included video taped evidence), I know damn well I heard "Flirt" and "Heaven I need Hug" and the other singles from the albums Kelly kept churning out while his legal troubles were being resolved being played on the radio.

Now, in Kelly's case there was a widely bootlegged videotape of him HAVING SEX WITH A CHILD but that didn't seem to deter his career much. And don't tell me their singing to different audiences because I've been to an R. Kelly concert and there were plenty of tween and teenaged girls all tarted up to listen to him wail about how their bodies remind him of his jeep (still, one of the dumbest "love" songs ever).

Also, going back a few more years, I don't recall Michael Jackson losing much radio airplay back in 1993 when the first allegations of child abuse began being reported/investigated

Yet Brown, who so far has not been charged with any form of physical abuse (and I'm not discounted the power of verbal/mental abuse), is already being ostracized and having his career affected based on sketchy reports and rumors and a charge that so far isn't even "criminal threat" but "suspicion" thereof.

I'm no particular fan of Brown's music, and please do not misunderstand me. If he physically or verbally abused Rihanna or any woman he should be publicly raked across the coals, stoned in the town square and encouraged to get help for his issues.

But KISS FM's preemptive strike just ain't right.

Wrigley's suspension surprises me less, as many corporate sponsors will bail on their star spokesmen the second any hint of impropriety arises.

I believe one of the cornerstone of our legal system is the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. That doctrine, of course, doesn't necessarily apply to the court of public opinion. But can we at least wait until we gain some idea of what actually (allegedly) happened before we start trying to ruin the kid's career?

In closing,

KISS 96.5 FM sucks.

For the record, I was not at Kiss FM/Cleveland when the R. Kelly situation went down. Additionally, if you did any research you would know that when the Michael Jackson accusations surfaced (circa the fall of '93) many radio stations DID, in fact, banish him from the airwaves. MJ wasn't getting much airplay in the fall of '93 anyway (his FREE WILLY song "Will You Be There?" was already dropping down the charts at the time of the accusations).

Who cares? Jeez, report on something people care about, why don't ya?

Madam FiFi February 11, 2009 at 2:38 pm

there has been no formal charges, DA sent case back to LAPD to investigate, so all of you people are just reacting on rumors and no facts, PITIFUL. If she looks to horrific let us see, Rihanna could be lying trying to pull a publicity stunt.

I suppose the real crime here is that Chris was in a dispute with another celeb. I can make a list of at least 10 current music stars that have assaulted someone (police, girlfriend/boyfriends, paparazzi, or if your RK/MJ they assaulted kids, etc.) and stations continue to play their music. Heck, Brandi KILLED somebody and she still gets rotation. The only reason she wasn't charged is because the person was an illegal immigrant. Moral of the story, real news isn't important anymore and unless your a celeb then your not important either.

I would like to add that although very beautiful Rihanna is obviously crazy (Halle Berry anyone). To grab a steering wheel of a moving vehicle in the middle of traffic could of killed somebody including herself. She might want to get some Paxil before she starts dating again. lol

ChrisBrownLova February 20, 2009 at 4:10 pm

i support chris no matter what….that KISS 96.5 is stupid…they dont know what happend…..i honestly think its a publicity stunt for rihanna….and if it not so what………r kelly and alot of other celebs have been aressted for worse things and their songs are still being played………..i love chris and my middle finger goes to anyone who doesnT………………………….

shae February 21, 2009 at 2:24 am

I hate this radio station anyway! KISS 96.5 sucks! they act like chris isn't human. ALL people make mistakes. this is the first time that something like this ever happened to him and they just dropping his songs like this! I still support chris no matter what.

Trevisa February 21, 2009 at 12:04 pm

While I am a major Chris Brown fan, I do not support his behavior. What Chris did was wrong and many people know that, but he is also human who makes mistakes. We seem to forget that that celebs go through the same problems we do. No one was in that car with him and Rihanna so no one has the right to say anything about this situation. I hear all these people saying they feel for Rihanna and speaking on things they do not even know. I personally feel for Chris, because he seems to be getting more of the grief behind this. No one is talking about how Rihanna was supposedly the first to throw a punch or grab the steering wheel while he was driiving. I believe that its both of their fault and not just his, she particiapted too. If I hit a man and he hit me back I couldn't say too much, all I could do is continue to fght them. I'm tired of this whole men are not supposed to hit women thing, if a women is bif enough to hit a man she's tough enough to get hit back. I support Chris Brown's music, because he is a great artist and deserves to be known as such. I do no think its fair for his music to be removed and Rihanna is still being played. All the radio stations should be fair and remove both Chris and Rihanna from their playlist. Chris is young and still has alot to learn and people are holding this over his head like he killed her, when other celebs have done worse. The stories in this situation kep changing and people do not know what to believe. This is no one's business but Chris and Rihanna's and everyone has something to say but them, so here's a suggesstion let CHRIS and RIHANNA handle their problems on their OWN!

Holly February 21, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Dang, KIIS-FM is one the biggest radio stations here in LA!!!!!! That gay guy is busted big time!

Es-Je February 21, 2009 at 7:38 pm

look what R. kelly has done and Michael Jackson, uu still play there songs. So why Chris Brown.
uu can not remove the songs of chris brown everyone makes mistakes. And mabye what he did is wrong but what they did was also wrong and uu still play there songs. UU going to lose a lot of publitici.
I hope that chris brown's mucis is going to come at the radio and forget all about it.
much love

CHRIS FAN/NOT GROUPIE!!! February 24, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Chris is someone who has a calm attitude, a cool persona and is loved and looked up to by so many; not solely b/c of his look or talent buh b/c of his persona; it pains me dat ppl jump to conlusions of wat happened between him n her n view him as the "BAD GUY". Honestly, the guy is only 19 if he did hit her ya its wrong, buh wat happened to escalate him to do so? Ask urself dat questio,n cuz i do like rihanna as well, buh im sure as hell she aint innocent in all of dis. I dnt condone such behaviour as violence, esp dat towards a woman buh CHris is a gud guy..NOT 1 celebrity said any b/s bout him or anything along the lines of "ya dats not suprising" every1 said hes a gud guy sumtin must of happened to make him do dat.
He's a kid, he made a mistake, DNT judge him n take away his music and career n TALENT! In a career span of 4 yrs SO FAR he has established himslef as the RNB PRINCe of today, he doesnt talk smack bout any1 or bout hims private life..hes a respectable person n styll is. Judge him all u want…CHRIS WILL BE BAK!!!!!!!!!!!!! I KNOE IT!
