DEVO's Mark Mothersbaugh gets degree from Kent

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

From the Associated Press

(AP) _ Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh, whose work was influenced by the National Guard campus shootings while he was a student at Kent State University in 1970, will receive a honorary degree from the school.

Mothersbaugh was an art major who studied print-making and painting from 1968 to 1973.

Devo members frequently point to the May 4, 1970, shootings at the university as a seminal moment that influenced their music and political message. Four students were killed by Guardsmen during a protest against the Vietnam war.

Devo, an experimental rock group originally performing under the name Sextet Devo, gave its first concert on the Kent State campus in April 1973. The band is best known for its 1980 hit "Whip It."

University trustees approved the honorary doctor of humane letters on Wednesday.

The Zeppelin WON'T Fly Again….at least until September

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Though Robert Plant frets about "merciless repitition" when asked about the possibility of a full-fledged Led Zeppelin reunion world tour, Jimmy Page (as he has been for years) is ready to load up the private planes and hit the road according to this recent Billboard story.

Speaking in Tokyo today (Jan. 28), Page said, "The amount of work that we put into the 02, both for ourselves rehearsing and also for the staging of it, was probably what you'd put into a world tour anyway."

He noted that Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant "also has a parallel project running [with Alison Krauss], and he's really busy with that project, certainly until September. So I can't give you any news on anything at the moment." .

Plant and Krauss' album Raising Sand has been very well received and the unlikely pairing has produced a very relaxed and enjoyable album. I'll guess that Plant is a lot more excited by the upcoming Krauss tour which begins in April, than he is by the prospect of performing Dazed and Confused (which he introduced during the O2 show with the ambivalent "there are songs we have to play, and this is one of them) and Stairway To Heaven three or four nights a week for a year.

Methinks Pagey and Jonesy may end up disappointed by Plant's lack of enthusiasm for the tour idea come Autumn.

Keep hope alive, Zepheads.

Another interesting factoid from this article is Page's answer to the question of whether the average long standing and loyal Zep fan should purchase the new compilation Mothership

"Please don't — I don't want you to buy it."

Wow, you seldom hear an artist suggest fans don't buy new product particularly when he's doing interviews to promote said new product. Apparently Page was dissatisfied with the previous comps, Early Days and Latter Days released in 1999.

"The overall packaging just did not have the quality of what we expect from Led Zeppelin and what I think everyone else expects from Led Zeppelin," Page said. "It just made sense to have something done so we don't have to think about it again."

At least until some new super groovy packaging comes along….

Cocaine is a helluva drug..just ask Ike Turner

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

From the BBC Web site.

US soul legend Ike Turner, who died last month at the age of 76, was killed by a cocaine overdose, Californian coroners have established.

"We are listing that he abused cocaine and that's what resulted in the cocaine toxicity," said an official at the San Diego County medical examiner's office.

Cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema were also given as "significant" factors in the death.

Turner's daughter Mia said she was shocked by the report.

The singer had waged an "ongoing struggle" with drugs, she said, but the coroner was "overstating the situation".

"Daddy, at that point, was not doing drugs to the level it leads to believe," she told the North County Times in a telephone interview.

The former husband of Tina Turner died at his home near San Diego on 12 December.

Paul Parker, chief investigator at the medical examiner's office, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying hypertensive cardiovascular disease and pulmonary emphysema were also "significant and contributing factors" in Turner's death.

Wow, a 76 year old OD's on coke, you don't see that everyday.

Seriously, folks.
Cocaine is not your friend.

Marylin Manson reunites with Twiggy Ramirez

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Though former Cantonian Marilyn Manson may be still in the midst of a lawsuit with former keyboardist Stephen Bier (a.k.a Madonna Wayne Gacy), who filed a $20 million lawsuit against him in August, fans attending the sold out Feb. 3 show at The House of Blues (what, he can't fill the Wolstein center anymore?) will be pleased to hear the following from a press release.

The duo that started it all, are back together to finish where they left off.

The two who co-wrote Antichrist Superstar, Mechanical Animals, and Holywood will be sharing the stage once again.

Joining Manson and Twiggy onstage for the U.S. leg of the Rape of the World Tour will be Chris Vrenna, Rob Holliday, and Ginger Fish. Tim Skold has amicably split with Manson, but future collaborations aren’t being ruled out between the two.

Expectations for the upcoming tour are best described by quoting one of Manson’s most infamous lyrics, “Everyone will suffer now”.

Enjoy.

"Doo-Wock-Oh!"

Yeah, the Brownies are out. But 10 WINS is 10 freakin' wins

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

I don't know if the song search is still going after the dissappointing end to the season, but here is what I came up with. Thanks

Sung to the tune "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi

It might not be perfect, but I found it a good starting point. Feel free to make changes or corrections.

The Browns time is now on the clock
The Browns are up tight
They're looking for some luck…its tough, so tough
Linemen hit the trenches all day
Working full of pain and making others pay
For wins - For wins

They say we've got to work hard with what we've got
'Cause no one else thinks
We can win it for squat
We've got our fans and that's a lot
For Pride, We'll it our shot

Whoa, Thomas makes a hole
Whoa, Cribbs already knows
He runs through tackles and picks up blocks
Whoa, he's faster than a bear

Braylon leaves the defense in shock
Now he's bringing in what he used to drop
And more, And more
Lewis dreams of running all day
He plows through the line and inflicts some more pain, all day

We've got to work hard with what we've got
'Cause no one else thinks
We can win it for squat
We've got our fans and that's a lot
For Pride, We'll it our shot

Whoa, they throw it in the air
Whoa, But Sean Jones is there
He picks it off and he takes it back there
Whoa, Dawson kicks it square

We've got to come out ready or not
You fight for this night, when it's all that you've got

Whoa, We launch in the air
Whoa, Braylon with the snare
Hand it off, Lewis is almost there
Whoa, Winslow on a prayer

Whoa, the Browns are here
Whoa, this is our year
Raise your hands, we are going there
Whoa, This is our year

Whoa, the Browns are here
Whoa, this is our year
Raise your hands, we are going there
Whoa, This is our year
