Words from Wedge

October 2, 2009

You may continue with the Ted Wiliams cracks if you like, but I'm trying to raise the level. Yesterday I said I'd include some of the transcript from Eric Wedge's news conference the day it was announced he would not be back. He was never better. Here's some excerpts:
Did he get a fair shot?
"I'm the [...]

Eric Wedge won't return in 2010

October 1, 2009

Trying to catch up on current events while computer issues remain …
The Indians announced that Eric Wedge would not be back next season, a nice way of saying he’d been fired. This produces a lot of ambivalent feelings.
I’m not as virulently anti-Wedge as many folks seem to be. I don’t get all that upset about [...]

Yet another complaint about Eric Wedge

September 10, 2009

Let’sgotribe.com has a pretty thoughtful rant on the Indians lineup yesterday. Its main issue: Eric Wedge had no business starting Niuman Romero at first base when Andy Marte needs at-bats.
They have a point. Anthony Castrovince of Indians.com points out that Romero was surprised to find himself starting, that he feels better at second or shortstop [...]

Eric Wedge will stay the season

July 6, 2009

Between an orthodontist appointment for my daughter and driving to the office to meet with the boss, there won't be much time for blogging. But I'll try. And I did notice that Mark Shapiro put to rest any question about Eric Wedge's status with the team this season.
Wedge will remain the manager – and his [...]

Some fans might take him up on the offer

May 20, 2009

Eric Wedge is falling on the sword. FOX's Ken Rosenthal: "He appears in no danger of losing his job. But he has informed general manager Mark Shapiro that if anyone gets fired, it should be him – the ultimate act of accountability from a manager who demands the same of his players."

Why not let Cliff Lee go nine?

May 20, 2009

Classic second-guess: Should Cliff Lee have started the ninth last night? Now that we know Kerry Wood was not going to succeed, we can yes it should have been Lee. But the problem nowadays is managers are so programmed. The closer pitches the ninth, so he starts the ninth. Me, I don't know what's wrong [...]

We interrupt the NBA playoffs to opine on the Indians

May 11, 2009

Noticed from afar that the Indians are 11-21. That would not seem to be good.
Let's do the math. The Indians have lost nearly twice as many as they've won, and if they want to win 90 games they'll have to finish the season 79-51. That's 28 games over .500, and a .607 pace. It can [...]

Indians misery meter starting to boil

April 28, 2009

The Indians start is reaching the miserable level. Jason Bay's three-run home run off Kerry Wood in the ninth inning might have driven it there. As Geoff Beckman writes, "It's like you're on a 'Chamber of Horror' ride– a new disaster every day. You just want to scream 'What's next?  How are you guys planning [...]

Shapiro: Different camera showed it was a HR

April 20, 2009

Indians GM Mark Shapiro just concluded a conference call with local media. Shapiro has been a strong proponent of replay, especially as it relates to home runs, and he said the umpires got the call right when they ruled Jorge Posada's ball went into the stands in New York on Sunday.
Between stating that the Indians [...]

The Indians starts are starting to be maddening

April 14, 2009

The Indians have started another of those seasons when they're in the perfect storm of things going wrong. They get no starting pitching, they get runs. They get a game when the pitchers give up four runs, the hitters strand 38 guys and see Victor Martinez, Travis Hafner and Jhonny Peralta go down with runners [...]

All hail Opening Day II: Wedge on his lineup

April 6, 2009

Despite his spring training struggles, Travis Hafner will hit fourth in today's opening day lineup. Manager Eric Wedge is very comfortable with that idea (obviously). As spring wound down, Wedge talked with the Indians beat writers about his thought process in picking a lineup — and some of the questions dealt with suggestions by people [...]

Your Opening Day starter got shelled Tuesday

April 1, 2009

Indians starter Scott Lewis gave up 10 runs, 13 hits and  three home runs in 3 2/3 innings on Tuesday in Arizona. He's your starter for the home opener. After, Lewis blamed things on being unable to grip the ball in the dry air in Arizona. It sort of sounded a former Browns quarterback named [...]
