Anderson Vaejao

Wow

November 13, 2009

These plays are something … even when they happen to the local guy.

Cavs lose the opener to Boston

October 27, 2009

Not a great opening night for the Cavs, who looked like a team still trying to find itself.
LeBron James called it a "transition period."
Coach Mike Brown said: "We will get better."
The cynic in me started to ask why Boson's transition seemed so much easier, but there is an easy reason. Boston's new guys — Rasheed [...]

More on Varejao

July 9, 2009

ESPN's John Hollinger did a chat and was asked about Anderson Varejao's contract. Here's what he had to say (with a comment on soon-to-be-a-Cav Anthony Parker as well):
Q. Isn't the Varejao deal a little ridiculous? He really can't be worth 50 mil, can he?
A. A lot of people are killing the Cavs for the Varejao [...]

Something I wonder regarding Varejao

July 9, 2009

I wonder if the fact that the contract is six years indicates something about the future of LeBron James. Let's be honest, James makes Varejao a better player, and Varejao is valuable because he plays so well off of and with James. That's a strength. Without James, Varejao would be the guy few other teams [...]

Cavs retain Anderson Varejao

July 9, 2009

The Cavs signed Anderson Varejao to a six-year contract. It’s being touted as $50 million.
Six years, $50 million for Anderson Varejao is too much.
Except it’s not really $50 million. It could be $50 million, but it almost certainly won’t be $50 million.
It’s only $50 million if Varejao hits every incentive in his deal, one of which [...]

A critic trashes the Cavs chances

May 11, 2009

At last … a naysayer. Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com is not overly impressed with the Cavs front-court (or, in the present-day vernacular, the "bigs"). He loves LeBron James, but says the idea of the Cavs winning a championship is not realistic. In fact, he's downright insulting. He writes that the Cavs winning is "an insult [...]

Celtics gripe over Allen's suspension

April 15, 2009

Ray Allen's one-game suspension for elbowing Anderson Varejao in the you-know-what will cost him $193,000 (not $158,000 as I first reported). Allen called the elbow an "unfortunate incident."
Umm. Yeah.
Then he and Celtics coach Doc Rivers blamed everything on Varejao.
"If I get thrown down on the ground, whether you call it retaliation or protection – you [...]

There is justice in the NBA — Allen suspended

April 14, 2009

Ray Allen was suspended one game by the NBA for his elbow to the groin of Cavs forward Anderson Varejao. It means nothing to tonight's meaningless game against Philadelphia, but it will cost Allen $158,000. Allen responded with the elbow after Varejao flung him to the floor during the Cavs' win over Boston on Sunday. [...]

Here's what Ray Allen did to Andeson Varejao

April 13, 2009

No wonder Varejao was angry.

Cavs face Spurs without Varejao

April 5, 2009

I'm at the Cavs game, where the crowd is pretty subdued for a nationally televised game against the Spurs. Is this the product of two losses in a row?
One item of notes: Anderson Varejao is not playing today. The Cavs said it's because of a right wrist contusion. There was no specific blow or play [...]

Another very impressive night for the Cavs

March 2, 2009

If the Atlanta win was exciting and entertaining and amazingly enjoyable to watch … well … what was the Miami win? I'm not big on writing things off TV, but that win showed a lot of guts, heart and moxie on the part of the Cavs. Mo Williams came up with big plays, LeBron James [...]

Let us (please) welcome back Joe Smith

March 2, 2009

Never has a Joe Smith been more welcome. The news that the Oklahoma Thunder had bought out the contract of Joe Smith and that he's almost certainly headed to Cleveland to finish the season playing for the Cavs is most welcome. Smith is the final big man the Cavs have needed since the season started. [...]

Anderson Varejao should watch this …

June 3, 2008

Tihs is pretty interesting. It has probably the greatest NBA coach ever, Red Auerbach, with legendary official Mendy Rudolph talking about flopping.

They're both right. Flopping should not be part of the game. It's not defense. It's acting. (Cripes, does this mean I actually am backing up Rasheed Wallace?) If a guy gets run over he [...]

A (half-hearted) Wizards guarantee, and maybe LeBron didn't get fouled

May 1, 2008

Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said this after Game 5: "I think we are going to play great on Friday. I'm not predicting a win but I think we are going to play great on Friday and then bring it back here. … I guess I am predicting a win if I say we are coming [...]
