LeCharles Bentley appeared on Michael Reghi’s show on WKNR on Wednesday.

He was forthright, candid and honest. Bentley always was that way when he played, and one of the great losses from his injury – aside from on the field of course – was that Cleveland fans could not hear more from him.

Bentley “gets it.”

And he showed that in his interview.

Bentley called the Braylon Edwards trade a “knee-jerk reaction to what happened on Sunday and (the Browns) just had to do something drastic.”

But he also said that the Browns made a good trade and got great value in acquiring a third-round pick.

The most interesting discussion came when Reghi asked Bentley if the Browns could win with nothing but “buy-in” guys, i.e. Mangini guys.

The answer was direct.

“Yeah you can win that way in high school but you can’t win that way in the pros,” Bentley said. He elaborated, then went on to explain that he believes Edwards will thrive in New York, the Browns will regret the trade and the Browns will never win if they do not allow one player to be bigger than the coaching staff or the team.

“Imagine,” he said, “if the Cleveland Cavs felt that way about LeBron.”

His comment on Brady Quinn was interesting as well.

The interview is well worth hearing in its entirety.

It's interesting how the Indians are ripped for trading an established star who is going to be a free agent or who can't be retained and get young prospects in return.

The Indians do it, they're folding the tent, giving up, etc.

People are ready to march on Washington.

Yet when the Browns did the same thing with Braylon Edwards it's OK because he was going to be a free agent.

Cut to the chase: The Indians at least acquired young prospects in their trades. These players have the chance to be good. They might not be, but they have a chance.

The guys the Browns got for Edwards are just guys. They don't have a bullet next to their names on any personnel charts.

Trading Edwards might be addition by subtraction.

But they certainly didn’t get anything for him.

These guys might grow into players, but to pretend the Browns got some real, legitimate, expected-to-be-significant players is ignoring reality.

It would be nice if reports are true that the third-round pick the Browns acquired for Braylon Edwards becomes a second-rounder based on Edwards' play in New York, but Eric Mangini does not reveal those facts lest the new wallboard in Berea fall over.

The other word is that it only becomes a second-round choice if Edwards has an amazingly high number of catches.

But since Mangini will not reveal these kind of important details, we have to wait for it to leak. And it will. It’s just a matter of when.

Until it does, the good fans of the team where Mangini works have to wait for some pretty relevant information.

Lots of smoke again that he’s back on the block.
And Quinn wore Braylon Edwards’ cleats to practice Wednesday.
Not the kind of thing, it would seem, to endear himself to this coach.
Remember how excited everyone was that Quinn’s dream to play for the Browns was coming true? The Kosar jersey and all that stuff?

Some Rex Ryan comments on acquiring Braylon Edwards:

"I want to win now. Every team in the league should want to win now. In my opinion it’s a copout for any team to say, 'We’ve got a four-year program.' Well, how convenient. Your contract is four years, or whatever. To me, I don’t see how that's justified.

"Every team in the league has the same amount of money, the same resources. So why shouldn't you go for the same goal? We’re going for the Super Bowl championship. If people say that’s ridiculous, I think it’s ridiculous you should have any other goal in mind."

How can you not like that approach?

He also said of Edwards:

"I faced him two times a year for a long time (in Baltimore). He's young, fast, has a big size advantage, when he's covered he's still open. I know he's had drops … but he also comes down with some unbelievable catches."

In fact, it might have been the greatest year ever by a Browns receiver: 80 receptions, 1,289 yards, 16 touchdowns.

Too, getting rid of Edwards last season meant playing Syndric Steptoe. I'm not sure any coach wants to hang his future on Syndric Steptoe.

At least this season Eric Mangini gets to hang his hat on his two draft picks: Mohammed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie.
