Jogging the holiday memory banks

Anyone else other than me remember this sight? Anyone other than me remember the annual pilgrimage downtown? It's a Cleveland memory, unique only to this area. And it was quite something to see. No, that is not me in the photo, either.

    Where's Mr. Jingling?

  2. Elizabeth says:

Mr. Jingling was moved — Coach Mangini didn't want him around. Or Shapiro got a couple busted up minor leaguers for him.

Happy Holidays to the blog participants & Pat and all the best in 2010 :)

  3. Thanks Elizabeth … same to you.

Every year my mom and dad would make the trek from Eastlake to downtown just to see the wonderful windows downtown and to see Santa. And of course the breakfast with Santa was another really special memory.

And was I the only kid who found Mr Jingaling scary? I loved Captain Penny and Miss Barbara but I dreaded hearing Mr Jingaling how you ting a ling with your many keys…all my folks had to say was Halle's 7th floor and it would disolve me into a screaming mess.

I tell my 7 and 5 year olds the stories (don't do the math, I am an OLD father) and wish I could just load them into the car and show them what I am talking about.

Merry Christmas to all! And Pat, keep up the great work!

Halle's 7th Floor …. Wasn't it Mr. Jing-a-Ling? Not correcting — just trying to remember. I do remember the big tree and Sterling Linder sounds familiar, but that's all. Something to mention to my mother in Florida when I speak to her next.

Rapid Transit! Do they still have a rapid transit system in Cleveland?

Ralphie isn't the only one who remembers Francis the Talking Mule and the present that came down the slide at Sterling Lindners. That's how old I am.

  9. RedHawkRick says:

And Brian has the correct spelling, if you please.

We would drive from Garrettsville and get on the rapid transit in Shaker Heights. It was a thrill for my mom, sister and I to get off at terminal tower. After shopping at Halle's, and maybe getting a malted at the little counter near the escalator, we would walk the cold windy blocks to Stirling Linder Davis to see the big tree. My husband has the same memories, going to Cleveland from Canton on the bus.

Mr. Jingeling stiffed me out of a set of Hot Wheels.

  12. Bill Bonsiewicz says:

Some of you wanted a mural update
I asked Coach Mangini and as of this date
I'm pleased to correct Pat's misstated facts
It was not removed and it is coming back

When coach came to town, his shrewd eyes spied
A light on the mural that wouldn't light on one side
So we took it back to the workshop, my dear
We're fixing it there and we'll bring it back here

My Mom who didn't drive..taking me and my brother Sean downtown Canton via the city bus to visit the department stores(Grants, Kreskies,Oneils, the Five and Dime) while my nine other siblings were in school. This woman was a saint!

  15. Daniel says:

I think the photo is of the tree at Sterling Lindner Davis dept. store. My folks used to talk about it. That store and its massive Christmas tree is a bit before my time, but I remember the special trips downtown to Public Square and all the big dept. stores growing up in the '70s.

There's a lot of photos online, if you really want to walk down memory lane. I stumbled on this one
