1) Sadly, it's official: The Browns have been eliminated from the playoffs.
2) Brady Quinn gave little hope for the future with the way he played in Cincinnati, but I still would not give up on him. This season has been a mess from start to finish, so I think it's next to impossible to judge any player based on the way the offense has been run and the way things have gone.
3) When I see Quinn I kind of/sort of/maybe/perhaps want to think of Vince Young, a guy many were saying was done in Tennessee after last season. He's got himself back together. Why can't Quinn, he wrote, wondering if perhaps he's next going to advocate that the flying reindeer will soon be distributing Clark bars to all autoworkers as they clock in to work.
4) Really, the only two consistent and dependable guys on the offense week in and week out this season have been Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach — and maybe even Alex Mack. Them we can judge. They can stay. Put down roots. Buy, not rent. The rest … who knows what to make of their performances. Things have been mishandled that badly. When this season ends, it's best to flush it as fast as possible and move to clean water. And yes, that's a nasty image.
5) The Browns have yet to hire a general manager — how did this term "football czar" take hold? — and they might not until the season ends. It just seems that most folks who are available and willing to work in 2010 want to wait and see what else is available, and those who aren't available have to wait because they're working for another team. This tells me that Mike Holmgren might not decide if he wants to become the "czar of football" until after the season. Though it sure would be nice to think that he might become Cleveland's (dramatic music in the background as John Facenda mutters) "czar of football." I just think pursuing him makes a lot of sense.
6) It's hard to see anyone telling a new "czar of football" that he must accept a coach not of his choosing. No self-respecting "czar of football" is going to run "football" without wanting to choose "his" coach. Bottom line: This just does not seem good for Eric Mangini's "future" with the Browns. Using quotation marks that way always makes me think of Saturday Night Live.
7) The absence of a "czar" — again, where did this term arise? — shows in the Brian Robiskie situation. A "czar" could ask, pointedly: "What the heck? The guy is a second-round draft pick. The team is 1-10. Get the guy on the field and see what he can do." Would we rather evaluate Mike Furrey some more? Or was Jake Allen that impressive in practice last Thursday?
8) Shaun Rogers is done for the season, which is a shame. The guy is a good player who's given his all in every game since he's been a Brown. But I wonder how much it will matter. The Browns are ranked 31st in the league in defense with Rogers, and they're giving up 159.9 yards per game rushing with him in the middle. It's not like their ranking is going to plummet without him. Though I guess it could go to 32.
9) Rogers' penalty at end of the first half gave Cincinnati another of those infernal "untimed downs" the Browns have made famous, but at least it was a hustle play. Rogers chased Carson Palmer out of the pocket and just grabbed the wrong part of Palmer's jersey. The play did show why the horse-collar tackles has been banned. The potential for injury is high. And it was nice to hear Eric Mangini say he didn't see the play but he respected the ref's call. It was far different than the way he approached the pass interference penalty in Detroit, and a far better way to handle it. But, even though it was a hustle play, those three points sure changed the nature of the game.
10) It's pretty goofy of Mangini not to say exactly what Rogers' injury is, but that's the coach's policy.
11) That promise of stopping the run this season made by Rob Ryan before the season? Doesn't seem to have worked out.
12) Noticed that Darnell Dinkins caught a touchdown pass for New Orleans Monday night. That's the ex-Browns tight end, the guy the Browns let go when they signed Robert Royal. Dinkins caught the pass, and when the game ends he's in New Orleans playing for an undefeated team and eating beignets and drinking café au lait. It'd be interesting to know if he's happy about the change of scenery.
Three and Out
Hey Pat,
What's the real reason behind the unrelenting support of Brady Quinn? Did you dole out big bucks for official Brady Quinn jerseys for your daughters?
Brian D.
Twinsburg
Dear Brian,
Well, he did hold the door for me once at Panera.
Good afternoon Pat,
It’s hard to disagree with your assessment about Brady Quinn’s incomplete. But there is something I’ve seen the last two weeks that bothers me, to the point I wonder if he’ll ever pan out. On about 75 percent of his passes, he looks completely out of sync, like a power pitcher trying to throw to first base after fielding a slow roller in front of the mound. His motion is not right. How many times is he going to fire the ball into the ground at the receiver’s feet? There is no rhythm to his delivery. His wrist is tight, not loose. On a couple throws he looked like he was trying to throw a sinker, his wrist snapped so hard downward at the release. And that’s where the ball went – straight down.
Browns played Bengals close both games – and that’s the team that dominated the Central Division this year. The glory of the ‘Tradition’ of the Cleveland Browns has just expanded. It now includes the opponent scoring on extra plays awarded at the end of halves/games by penalties on the defense. Rogers’ play cost us three points. At the end of the game, that could have made a difference. In any event, we played them pretty tough this year. Silver lining?
How bad is a franchise when, over a 10 year period, its best players, year in, year out, are the punter and place kicker. Phil Dawson has to be the unluckiest player in the NFL. I think he might be the best place kicker the team has ever had. We just don’t realize it because he hasn’t been there to win big games for us. He’s such a classy guy. Think what a huge star he would be had he played for Indianapolis or New England the last 10 years.
And our punters have been very good as well. Dave Zastudil is as good as we’ve ever had.
So when you assess the cloud hanging over the Browns, ask yourself how many teams in the history of the NFL have lost both their place kicker AND punter simultaneously for an extended period of time.
George Rosin
Akron
Good day George,
Always good to hear from an old friend, and as always you raise good points. As for the silver lining, has it really reached the point where it's a silver lining to play the Bengals close? Is that what we've come to? And … how can there be any silver lining given your extremely accurate statements about the kickers.
From the online comments …
Eric Mangini is the Lord of his kingdom and no player should ever, ever question him over his rule.
Just look at his history. Because of his Lordship's rule, he has stabbed veteran players in the back, fired his own best friend General Manager, accused another former buddy coach of stalling time with fake injuries, and accused his former "mentor" (Belichick) of cheating by stealing signals.
He has overlooked veteran players at charity events (Rogers) and has had the most grievances filed against him in one season in the NFL.
If a player makes a statement to the press, that player's time is cut for the next game. Rookie players cannot get onto the field to play because they have not "shown enough" yet??? So he picks up free agents off the waiver wire and plays them instead???
He fines players with excessive fines and even refuses to allow them to play in a game until they learn "his way or the highway."
What happened to the days of a coach being a mentor, teacher and instructor instead of a ruler???
Not much else I can add here, other than I sure would hate to be his friend. I wonder how many Browns players feel that way right now???
Strange behavior leads to strange happenings.
Alex K
Dear Alex,
Fairness forces me to admit that Mangini does have his defenders online as well. Not many, but there are a couple holdouts. Just like there are a couple folks who still insist Oswald acted alone in the library with a paring knife.
I just wonder why you use three question marks at the same time.
(Want to be recognized in “Three and Out”? It’s a rare treat. Comment here or send an e-mail to pmcmanamon@thebeaconjournal.com, and put “First and 10” in the subject line.)
i haven't seen every game but from what i have seen eric steinbach hasn't looked too good.
I can't see Mangini keeping his job once a "Czar" is in place, either — and I don't think he should; but if Mangini at least has to answer to someone, that would be a good and necessary step (and long before the draft).
The thing about Mangini is that it really seems that many of the players on the roster right now (or some, meaning more than we think) might play at a pro level (ie. keep their jobs) under a new coach. I don't think it's a matter of getting in an easy coach, either — just someone who can be respected and believed in. I don't think the players have quit on trying to win, but I think they've lost faith in Mangini and Daboll (at least) and are thinking more about next year and whether they'll have jobs under the NEW coach they already expect (and, no, I don't think assuring them Mangini will be back is going to do anything except make them give up on fottball altogether).
Please excuse the "fottball"
Nothing says crazy as a loon like excessive punctuation!!!!
Terje: what Browns offensive lineman since 1999 would you consider decent? Its not like we've been lining up Cody Risen and Doug Dieken…
I really thought that when they brought in Mangini we might have made a pretty good choice, Man was I wrong. I'd say keep him on for the remainder of the Season and then cut him loose. He does have to go !! As for talent, they have it. Although the Coach is blind and won't use the Players he has. Start with Robinski, he's a very talented W/O keeping the bench warm ? No excuse for that or not using other good players who also keep the bench warm. In a nut shell, he's outa here. The Season can't be over with fast enough for me and quite a few other Fans ?? That will be all…M Hulgin
ellizabeth-i'm not saying steinbach is worthless but in the games i've watched i've seen him getting handled. anyways, to answer your question…
joe thomas is obviously better than decent. jeff faine is decent. zeus. and shaun o'hara who did pretty well with the giants after the browns bailed on him.
oh…i can't forget to mention long snapper extraordinaire ryan pontbriand.
Two things:
Mike Furrey plays 2-3 positions and right now is a better receiver then Robiskie, Terry Robiskie plays one position…enough said…They are right to keep Furrey activated
You can talk about hiring a czar or a gm all you want but the Browns will screw this up. They have for 10 years so what makes you think they are going to get it right this time.
I was a Brady Quinn fan, still am, but he is messing up the easy things for a QB like throwing to the correct side of a player based on where the d is. I agree the QB fiasco at the beginning of the season did not help him, but he screwed up a few 3rd downs where if he would have thrown the ball correctly we would have got the first and continued the drive. If he does not do the easy stuff right now, I have little confidence that he will be able to do the hard stuff (beat Pittsburgh for one) later.
Please tell me why Randy Lerner is waiting to hire Mike Holmgren! If the Browns are ever going to improve, Mr Lerner Jr. must back away from managing the football team. As much as I respect Mr. Lerner Sr. for getting our football team back, he had no clue who to hire and how to run the football team. Every one of his "hires" was a complete idiot, GM's, Coaches, VP's and Draft choices serve as proof. His son Randy has established that he is "on the job training" Please help, Tell Jim Brown or Bernie Kosar or both to wake up and get Randy to hire Holmgren Immediately!!!
eating beignets and drinking café au lait…another unrelated set of 'words' that the average football fan cannot relate too.. Pat, I do like you, in seriousness when you gave tales of your experience on your plane trip with the guy in front of you with no leg room, little bites as that -but you seem to drift off subject to interject your own brand of self absorbed humor, again which is OK for a paragraph or so but you seem to relish in yourself and brand of humor-as though we'll cackle with tummy muscles clenched without realizing who and what Akron and the people of this city represents. I do respect man of your Sports opinions but when you side track off to funny land it is good but only for a as they say in radio "in and out hit" yet you drag in and on where I lose site of the very "sports" article I want to read about MY team rather good or bad…Terry is missed and I supported you at the start but you have came into your own with a bit of a chip on you liberal shoulder that should NEVER be brought into a sports article-at least Terry espoused what he believed when leaving the main theme of his article not to mention he created a 'faith" page -now Pat, why not you , really, create your own political , weekly page where you can espouse your hate for those that are conservative, the likes of Palin and any other of those you deem unfit to lead
Lets see, where to tear down the complete tools that try to run the Browns through the media. First and foremost, about the fines Mangini has doled out: the player that was the recipient of the "water bottle" fine had more than 50 documented instances where he ran out on the tab for things like that. You multiply $3.50 (hotel honor bar prices remember) times 50, and then look up the criminal offense for stealing that much in goods. I'd say the theif got off easy.
Second, Brian Robieski: HE'S TERRIBLE. I love my Buckeyes more than most, but all he did at OSU was drop WIDE OPEN passes week in and week out, especially in his senior year. Anyone who thinks he was worth that high of a draft pick is a total homer and blind to reality. Maybe they can train him to use his size over a few years, but ready to play now? Not even close.
Third, Brady Quinn: Why are there still people on this bandwagon when it has no seats, wheels, horses, or band? This kid was not good at ND; what did he ever win? NOTHING. His errant throws were always putting Jeff Smarzdja in harms way, and forced him to make spectactular catches. He has never had the arm strength to throw the deep ball, as evidenced by the high looping rainbows that have more hang time than a punt and allow defenders to run under the ball, eat some fondue, get a manicure, and then pick the ball. You homers in NE Ohio just HAD to have him, and your crying for him cost us draft picks the following year. So was he worth a first round pick and a second round pick? LMAO
david, the average football fan is a bit smarter than you.
"Anyone who thinks he was worth that high of a draft pick is a total homer and blind to reality."
not sure if mangini is a homer but he's definitely blind to reality.
@ David: I agree whole-heartedly! I used to think McManamon was the best sports writer at least in the state, if not the country, but ever since early this year he has become preachy and blinded by what it seems he thinks is "his greatness". Terry Pluto is not only an intelligent, level-headed sports writer, but he is also succinct and to the point, not garbled and rambling like Pat has become. I am really disappointed in the Beacon Journal's sports department. A woman that most days clearly has no more clue about football than a Tibetian Monk is their best football writer. How neglected we are in Akron.
"Terry Pluto is not only an intelligent, level-headed sports writer, but he is also succinct and to the point, not garbled and rambling like Pat has become"
pfffffffffffffffffft
and
hahahahahahahahahaha
terry pluto is northeast ohio's most spineless, say-nothing shill. i can't wait to read his "i told you so" ariticle when mangini finally gets the ax. nevermind that he traded insight for access so long ago i can't even remember the last time pluto was the first sportswriter to lead a charge against anything that wasn't rubber stamped by cavs/browns/tribe hq.
Tarje: The Robieski pick was made to satisfy the fans here in Ohio that think every player to go to OSU is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Every coach and front office personnel has watched as year in and year out the fist game a coach loses the Browns fans want him fired; the first time a GM drafts someone other than who the fans want we want him fired; the first time the team president (or head of football operations- yes we had one and the fans got him fired to keep Phil Savage) we scream for him to be fired. Why was Mangini brought in here? Because it was known that he doesn't give a crap if the fans don't like his methods: they work plain and simple. 2 winning seasons in that mess that was the Jets when he took over, one with a QB (who we all know wouldn't tell a soul if he didn't feel up to playing) that had a detached biceps muscle for half the season. Our penalties are cut in half from previous seasons, and players are held accountable for their actions whether it's on the field or off, and that has led to better discipline on it. All we need now is a safety, a QB, and a stud RT and we will be winning again.
sean, you're living in dreamland. if mangini's methods worked he would still be in new york. also, don't pawn the robiskie pick on the fans. that is fat boy eric's pick all the way. along with the other crap he got on that day. 2 stiffs and one mediocre receiver instead of at least one of the couple lb's that EVERYONE knew could play.
here's mangini thinking about favre in the second half last year:
"gee, brett's not throwing so good. maybe i'll take over the playcalling, stop pounding the ball and have brett throw 40 times in some of our remaining games. that should get us in the playoffs."
time for the ballboy to go back to picking up dirty jocks off the floor.
Well Terje, I'm glad you like reading about what players not even in the same conference anymore are eating for dinner, and about what type of socks he wears on a cold winter day, and things of that nature. I prefer to read about sports, and preferrably FACTS about them instead of one journeyman sports writer's opinions that he tries to goad the rest of you sheep into thinking it's reality. So you keep reading Pat's drivel and keep thinking that Obama's health care plan is going to help people more than the screwed up system we have does, and when reality sets in you can blindly join the majority like you actully understood how things worked to begin with. Freakin' sheep.
sean, i'm a football fan. not just a "true" browns fan. perhaps you'd know a bit more if you watched a team that actually played well.
and obama? what's that got to do with me? the guy is as dumb as the last guy who had the job.
Do yourself a favor and study this website: http://www.profootballfocus.com
It is a totally unbiased look at each player on every play. It will support the fact that Steinbach has not played well this year. It also shows that there's only about 3 NFL players on this roster.
Yuck, I agreed with Tar-get.
By the way, why is it that Josh Cribbs can not be an NFL receiver? I love the hustle, the way he cares, and his overall attitude. However, me thinks the homey is a bit slow in the brain…
terje,
you are one of he….and fine but your assessment is nothing more than a ginger bread house and I only can assume your 'political" leanings are those of Pat's which is and was my point-sport s is sports -leave Sarah Palin and the likes-oops the dis-likes of those "he" – "you" hate out from a SPORTS commentary…now I will say when Pat sticks to sports-only, I agree most times with him but lately he has wandered of course into CNN land…I am so tired of all of this garbage and I say this with heart-my one escape is sports and to read my home town paper that is and should write (exclusively) about the Cavs, Browns or Indians somehow drifts off off into Palin land-seriously, obviously you are not a fan of 'Palin: or the conservative movement but that is not the issue here, it is about sports….look, I love anyone that loves my Browns and would never quarrel when it comes to them, yet maybe who should be at QB, but… that it different than religion or politics …and I respect all views, but the Akron Beacon Journal should ever replace a sports/faith icon with someone that deliberately espouses views other than sports…to me it is un ethical..so with that Terje (time) E (erased) (religion) J (just) E (ended) just be cool we are all the same, and should all have a fair say…..sports, lets assume -Glenn Beck was a sports writer yet threw in a few "conservative jabs"- you would lose your mind!! That is all I am saying…gingerbread cookies sound great by the way!
i'm montanan. we have our own view on politics that doesn't quite line up with the rest of the countrys simplified blue/red mentality. if sarah palin was a democrat that would't make her any less of a walking example of living braindeath. i hope that clears things up a bit for you david.
nice site tardje. i knew you'd come around to my side.
As usual, Mangini isn't giving the media the straight poop. That #9 above? Well, if people would bother to use that invaluable DVR thing, like I do (I barely know how to use it, but I did learn how to press the red button on my remote to record), you'll notice that Mangini was fibbing. In point of fact, his game reaction was EXACTLY like his reaction in the Detroit game. Which is all that matters, because he's all about discipline, and his complete lack of it cost the Browns the game against Detroit when he opted to use that timeout only because he needed to scream at the officials.
If you have it, look at the video of the Cincinnati game. Turn the sound off. You can easily read Mangini's lips. At the end of the half, he ran onto the field and completely lost his marbles and went absolutely berserk at the official that called the Rogers penalty, and expressly accused him of costing the Browns "three points."
And this guy actually says he didn't see that play, let alone says he respects that official's call? How big did his nose grow after he said that?
Oh, and whoever it is that's mesmerized by meaningless numbers, charts and graphs, like on that proffootballfocus.com, or whatever that is, give it up. I took a quick one-minute gander at that site. It instantly lost any semblance of credibility when I saw its highly accurate scientific ratings rated John St. Clair 25th out of 76 NFL tackles. Uhh … OK.
TER-JE
Own views? you mean that you are not of this country? I understand that you have only a college football college team to root for but in terms of what my point was-oh-sorry-took pat's line-I just meant that politics should NEVER be injected to a sports commentary -UNLESS – it was somehow sports related but Pat finds his deseptive ways to toss in barbs towards Palin/Bush and the likes…it has not a thing how we got smashed against the Bengals…that is all I am saying. If I want to read that political crap then I can go to the front page of the ABJ or the associated press…but my friend, not sports as this is the one thing that actually makes me feel or forget my daily hardships..even if the Browns lose-I still seek just the same as you most likely did before Obama was elected.
Oh, and Sean … how do we know that the dude who was fined $1,700 for a swiped mini-bar water bottle had "over 50" prior screw-ups? Because a Mangini ally leaked that to the media, that makes it true? Balderdash. Sorry, I don't buy it. And neither should you. Ask yourself this simple question: Given everything that he's shown this year, would Mangini have ever allowed "over 50" from one single guy in the first place? Not a chance in Hades.
Why does Mangini always say that he didn't see the play? Doesn't he watch films? Obviously not. I'm tired of his lying and tired of losing. I don't blame the whole season on him, Phil Savage screwed us with his stupid pics. How about Terry Robiskie? Can you believe we could have had Santonio Holmes as a receiver just to satisfy Ohio State fans? That is a good receiver. I totally hate the Steelers and will always be a Browns fan, we can't have a revolving door of coaches so why not give Mangini a few years with a good GM like Holmgren that knows football. The Cleveland Browns are not that far from being a good football team. Look at some of these NFL teams that turn everything around after being 2-14 and end up in the playoffs. We should've had a different running back all year long, sick of watching Lewis run for 2 yards. Brady Quinn could be the man if he gets some confidence and some protection in the pocket and our defense is sure not far from being good. A couple DB's, maybe one corner to replace McDonald and maybe we'll be lucky enough to get Sean Rogers back next year. Sorry but I'm too mad to spell. Always a Browns fan!
Uhh…this is a blog, guys. Dude can write about whatever he pleases, including his Aunt Sadie's bunions. This is all extra stuff, and he can write about the Browns or his daugters' Brownie troop for all of me. I don't have to read it, and neither do you.
As for Pluto; that guy's been covering sports for 30 years and still knows almost nothing about them. He was once a great beat writer for the Cavs, and then became the absolutely worst columnist in the country. Whether it is the Holy Roller part of him or what, he was the most pious pain-in-the-ass I've ever read. Stub your toe in public, and Terry would have you down for 12 Hail Mary's and kicked off the team.
By the way, the most important thing about Pat's opinion of Mangini: he's been right from the get go. Maybe that is what burns your bottom.
Nothing to do with the Browns, but I completely agree with this, right on the money: "As for Pluto; that guy's been covering sports for 30 years and still knows almost nothing about them. He was once a great beat writer for the Cavs, and then became the absolutely worst columnist in the country." You forgot to say that his books used to be good, too. I'll say this for the guy, you either love him or you hate him, and it's given him carte blanche to mail it in on reputation.
He serves the Plain Dealer's purpose, though. And it's probably way too late in the newspaper game for Pat to get his own billboard.
Does Pat's Aunt Sadie really have bunions? What are bunions, anyway? I wouldn't know the difference between a bunion and somebody's webbed feet.
I seem to remember Robiskie had good hands and made some fanatastic catches at Ohio State. He's also tall. What he didn't have was speed. But, most important to Mangini, I speculate, is that he's had a reputation as a quality individual and academic big ten. I don't think the college he went to had anything to do with why he was drafted.
And what does Mangini mean by the players have to prove they belong on the active or have to earn it or whatever? How? And how did this Tate guy earn it in a day or two of practice?
I don't know from watching, but commentators and columnists have said Steinbach isn't quite what he was last year. What I wonder is how much of that fall off is due to Mangini's games about weight and Steinbach having to earn the right to play.
Why is Mangini going so far to destroy any concept of "team" on the team?
I like Terry Pluto's columns. He's pretty much level headed and his opinions don't suffer for being calm and maybe more middle of the road, seeing the good and bad.
One thing I didn't like was his campaign to keep the Cavalier girls off the TV broadcasts ….
Keith, not only does Pluto want the Cavalier girls off the TV broadcasts, he wants veils and parkas on them while they're dancing.
Did you read his column after the Baltimore game, the one featuring that stupid lateral play at the end? He didn't opine and analyze the game itself. Nope. His entire column was devoted to writing about what a great guy Cribbs is, that he deserves a pay raise, and to top it off, he *literally* prayed for him! In the sports section of a major newspaper. Honest to God. No pun intended.
Sorry, but if I want to read The Pope's viewpoints on sports, I'll subscribe to the Vatican's newsletter.
alan t., look at the St. Clair game by game. He's had a couple terrible games and a couple good ones. Since you brought it up, here's the rankings for most of the offense (grades aren't in yet for this weekend):
WR: Cribbs 71 (tie)
HB: Lewis 50
QB: Quinn 32
TE: Heiden 7, Royal 54
C: Mack 8
G: Fraley 23, Womack 50, Steinbach 77
T: Thomas 1, St. Clair 25 (13th out of RT's though)
I agree, that seems a tad high for St. Clair, but I don't remember him playing as bad as the Elvis Dumerville game.
Interesting that they have the Cleveland linebackers pretty low on the ratings too… Wimbley being the worst of the bunch from Cleveland… Maiava is rated dead last at ILB.
It is hard to argue with the rest of these assessments though.
Alan,
Veils and parkas makes me laugh … but not untrue!
re: 4) "Them we can judge"? Gee, I generally like Pat's comments, but I don't find him to be an exceptional writer. Is there an editor in that building? I'm no Steelers fan (although I lived in Pittsburgh for 5 years) but for a very GOOD sportswriter, check out Gene Collier in the Post-Gazette. He's exceptional.
An editor for a blog? Talk about superfluous.
wow its AMAZING!!!! How much angst comes out when ones team is so so bad………..i look at it as a BAD divorce i pined for years that i still love her but she always let me down …now i know its over for i cant watch on sundays ……i still wish her well and might be stoopid enough to take them back if they gave me a reason…..please give me a reason……and be nice yall its CHRISTMAS time…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just Kidding GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! CAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Roadkill … it's called an abusive relationship … the fans keep getting abused by this team, yet they just keep coming back for more.
Exactly, Pat. The same reason chicks date Jim Brown.
I blame the Browns play on Mangini.
He hired the other coaches and like him they can not see or judge talent.
Players come and go but look at who we let go and where they are starting.
Only a fool believes that this coach should stay around another few years.
The team has went backwards since he arrived. Sure he plugged the holes from the previous GM & Coach but I'm sure they would have filled those holes and most likely with better players then cast offs.
Harrison is the only player to rush for 100 yards against the Bengals in 20 games but we will never see him again. He can't pick up every blitz so he can't play according to the coach. Robinski can't get on special teams so he can't play according to coach. Anderson gives us a better chance to win according to coach.
(I could go on for the whole roster)
As for Quinn, he has yet to have the same wide recievers 3 weeks in a row. Hard to get in sync with team mates when they are different every week and most likely he is practicing with different recievers at each practice.
I was against drafting him, but we have him and I do believe he will get better if there is some continuity in the play calling and players. (tom brady just had a QB rating of 55 against the saints)
Get a Right Guard and Right Tackle, that will do wonders for the offense. Build the O Line. You win games with Corners and Tackles and by attacking the middle of the field (how about those TE's Coach let go for the ones he picked up)
I get a kick out of online browns fans. You all should try watching something other then the ball, you would actually see what is going on and turn the TV sound off and listen to the radio. Doug Dieken will give you more info in 5 minutes then any druken suit standing in front of a camera wondering why he has to sit through an AFC north game.
Oh well, another decade to go. Been a browns fan for 4 decades, don't know if I'll live long enough to see a winning season hahaha
Saw something really unique in the Monday night game. The
announcers called it a "forward pass" . Seemed pretty entertaining, maybe the Browns can try it some time !
Sean, Terry Pluto is a self confessed habitual masturbating, porn addicted pervert. He wraps himself up in Jesus clothes to make himself feel better. He only criticizes the powers at be ( after floating his moistened [gross] finger to the winds of public opinion) when he feels it is safe!
Pat sorta like Rhianna and chris brown…. or charlie brown trying to kick the football and Lucy keeps *****ing him and he falls…..or the Eagles breaking up then H*** froze over….or Archie yelling at Edith even though we all know he loved her and was mad at meathead because he wanted more for his lil girl??? OR Alan and terge combining their forces to inform the KOOL-AID gang? they do keep coming back for more……Keep the faith my Irish Brother
I went to that PFF site and tried to punch in players but only got an "invalid options" message
Can we just get someone in here, who doesn't think they know more than the rest of the league and spend every draft for the past 10 years out guessing themselves! Btw, they all seem to be first timers who know everything. Get a proven football man in here who won't let players like Brian Cushing slip by. This is getting old.
I don't understand how the Plain Dealer allows Pluto to write that religious column.
If the browns do not draft a quarterback that can pass we will have another season of inconsistant football like this years mess.Quinn is not throwing like a pro football quarterback. Inconsistant passing isnt a sign of inexperience its a sign of ian inconsistant quarterback. An inexperienced quarterback gets better as the season goes on.
me thinks back to the 80s and how Steve Young could not throw his way out of a bath tub in Tampa……change of coaching styles did him pretty good…and that team he went to wasnt chicken feed either…..just saying//////// it could happen..
You don't draft another rookie quarterback. We can't keep trying to put under achieving quarterbacks on the field. You go after a veteran and build around him.
Rebuilding every year is not going to change the Browns. That is stupid think and is exactly why we are as bad as we are.
Also "FIRE" Mangini and the Offensive coordinator. The two are the biggest joke in pro football
