Bill Belichick has won a lot of games in New England, sometimes with unorthodox decisions. Sunday night he lost one with an unorthodox decision and he's taking a lot of heat for it. Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe even compared him to Bill Buckner.

The shots of The Hoodie after the Patriots lost were great. He had that puzzled look, like the Grinch when Christmas still came despite there being no ribbons and tags… packages, boxes, or bags.
Despite the success as he's had since he left, I still cannot stand Mumbles Belichick and rejoice anytime he's made to look like the buffoon that he really is. No, Bill, we'll never forget how you destroyed the fanbase here with your antisocial, boorish behavior. You're a tool with a capital "T."
How little trust did you have in your defense that you wouldn't punt that ball? Even a first-grader could deduce the odds better than you did. Maybe you needed ManGenius by your side to guide you? Or maybe Chaz Weis? Or maybe Romeo?
Wait….again, exactly WHY are teams looking for someone from the "Belichick Tree?"
Three rings Marc, three rings
Three rings? As in "circus?" Show me a REAL pro team who'd actually hire Mangini, Weis and Romeo as their head coach. Oh crap, I'd better shut up…Lerner might actually realize that Weis will soon be on the market.
the great thing about belichick's gamble is that it exhibited paralyzing fear to peyton manning, the colts and millions of viewers. is there another qb in history that would make a 3 time super bowl champion coach figuratively crap himself on the sidelines? that was an embarrassing display of weakness on belichick's part that gave a little insight on the true character of the man. i can picture him curled up in a ball on the floor of his bedroom crying and shivering all night after that game.
Quotes from Belichick's press conference following the game…
"Frightened? Child, you're talking to a man who's laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom, and chuckled at catastrophe… I was petrified."
"Pay no attention to that man behind the hoodie."
"Do not arouse the wrath of the great and powerful Hoodie. I said come back tomorrow."
It was some years ago that I saw an article (I'm pretty sure it was in a TV Guide, but I've never subscribed to that, so don't know for sure) where Belichik answered a question about coaching innovations he envisioned and he said someday a coach was going to come along who abandoned punting altogether, and just planned on 4 downs to get the first down every time.
I guess he really believes in that ….
Actually, I've read a fairly persuasive statistical analysis that argued a team should never punt. This isn't the one I had in mind but the idea is out there:

I don't think that study had the Cleveland Browns in mind, as we couldn't pick up consistent first-downs if they gave us SIX tries per possession instead of four. Am I right? Holla!
Here's an article from the NY Times written in 2004 about an academic paper on the analysis of when to punt with Bill Belichick's thought about the theory:

hey Terje, what number did you wear when you played football? What? I thought so.
