But that's precisely my point. I'm not talking about your typical multi-billion dollar businesses. I'm talking about professional sports and entertainment. It's not even close to any typical business. What's wrong with just trusting one consultant? I'm talking about the real consultant, not the drunk spy who keep popping up on radio delusional that he has some say in matters.

Radio stations hire their own consultants to program their stations? So what's wrong with Lerner selecting Accorsi as his consultant? The Falcons seem to be doing OK. You don't want to be selecting a whole bunch of consultants, that's just confusing and stupid. Lerner is over his head to begin with. You really think it makes a lot of sense to have Rush Limbaugh whispering in left ear, and Al Franken whispering in your right?

Alan, it's not about Lerner interviewing anybody himself. It's about Lerner getting a lot of opinions from a lot of people on a lot of candidates. THAT is how it's done by a successful business. No one is advocating that Lerner do the interviewing personally, and then make the decision personally. The guy is arguing the exact opposite--that Lerner get a lot of opinions from a lot of people. Not just Acorsi and Kosar.

Man, if you had any idea how other multi-billion dollar operations take tons of time, and spend whatever it takes, and do all the homework they can in order to determine who to hire to take over as CEO or CFO or Managing Director, or whatever--while you are advocating that dopey Randy Lerner just take Acorsi's word for it?

It's a lot more complicated than either you or Lerner have ever been able to admit to, which is why it's never been done properly. You don't just take the hot name, or the guy with pedigree. If it were that easy, then everyone would simply do it and there would be no downtrodden franchises. If it worked that well, then Holmgren would still be in Seattle.

This is why the Steelers make the smart choices that last them for decades, while the Bungles and the Browns and the Cards and the Lions keep having to go back to the well every other year. The smart teams take the time, do their due diligence, and get the decision right the first time, while the dumb ass franchises just jump from one hot chick to the next, thinking that eventually one of them will turn out to be both hot and a rocket scientist.

A coin flip is a coin flip is a coin flip. Doesn't matter how many times it comes up heads--it's still just a 50% chance that it will come up tails next time. So let's stop making coin flips to determine our coaches and GMs and QBs, and let's do the work that is needed to get the deal right this time.

You guys don't get my point. I have my entire net worth (which isn't much, but still) that Accorsi is the guy who recommended Homlgren to Lerner. He's not doing this blindly. Accorsi was Arthur Blank's recent advisor in Atlanta for the same reason. Accorsi gave him the name of three guys, including Kokinis. Just like Lerner with Mangini, he didn't bother interviewing everybody on the market. In fact, Blank only interviewed two of Accorsi's three guys, and made his decision after the second guy. Didn't even get to interview Kokinis, because he stopped interviewing candidates.

So my point is, Lerner doesn't need to interview anybody. Really, what's the point? That's why God created retired consultants. The experienced smart ones wearing bad toupees (like Accorsi) for actual hiring. The incredibly naive and/or dumb and/or egotistical and/or arrogant and/or egomaniacal ones (like Jim Brown and Bumbling Kosar) to spy on the current hires.

That's why I'd prefer somebody like Jim Holmgren, or somebody like him, to do the actual interviewing of guys who would be under him. I don't care if Holmgren knewwhat he himself was doing in his GM role with the Seahawks, but at least he has a far greater feel for what's needed in a hire.

All of the above who are worried about how few rings have been won- we need to first concentrate of competing week in and week out. You can say this guy or that guy only won one ring etc. Let's get real. Before we can even think about that we need to find out what it takes to win 8 games in a season. Then worry about the playoffs. Remember everyones concern because Marty couldn't win the big one. He at least got 3 teams there. Just get me there I will take my chances once there.

And my reference to "do the math" is in regard to needing to sell PSL's during the season why when Brett had a bum bicep they could not put him on the bench.I still think Mangini can coach
