We interrupt today's entertainment for a special link (thanks to proffootballtalk.com for highlighting it). It's about a journeyman cornerback named Rod Hood, but it has some interesting observations on his experience in Cleveland this training camp. Folks, I'm not making stuff up … people do not like playing for this coach. Among Hood's comments: “I’ve never experienced football [like that]. I came from two good organizations in Philly and Arizona, and I’d never seen football handled the way it was when I was there.”

pat, i'm going to have to interrupt this article to rant about the b.s. that c.c. sabathia pulled at last night's knicks game. he showed to every cleveland fan that he is a supreme douchebag. talking about how lebron should come to new york and how there's no better place to win. hey c.c. if you hadn't crapped your pants against the red sox in 2007 and won in cleveland you would have been revered as a god. the first person to win in cleveland will have the power to command fans to jump off cliffs like thulsa doom did to that girl in conan the barbarian. bernie kosar made a few afc championship games but you'd think he healed the sick and raised the dead the way he's treated by fans. new york will turn on him in a heartbeat if he blows games like he did in cleveland in the future. who does he think he is? derek jeter? sorry c.c., new yorkers got fed up with joe torre and he won 4 rings with the yankees. when his talent doesn't outperform his fat gut he's going to see what new york can really be like. he'll be kicked to the curb but had he won in cleveland the fans would have been fighting to help him load up in the buffet line.
Interesting comments from Mark Sanchez about playing in NYC:
http://xr.com/6yvg
"…it’s almost like they want you to say something wrong, and it’s almost like everyone’s just kind of waiting. But everything’s gone really well so far, so I’m playing things cautious, and playing them smart, and respecting my team and watching myself with what I say and how I act as much as possible. A perfect example was the hot dog thing. You know, it was crazy to see something like that blow up the way it did.”
In reply to the above posts:
1. New Yorkers did not get "fed up" with Joe Torre. He was and remains beloved. The organization squeezed him out and most New Yorkers didn't agree. In New York, for better or worse, ballclub decisions are made by the teams and not by the fans. Cleveland teams could learn from that.
2. Sanchez better grow up fast. New York is high risk and high reward. The media folks are tough. Any postseason loss means the manager or coach catches hell-and often the players too. In this last Series Joe Girardi caught hell after games the Yankees WON. Sanchez is all over television here with commercials and is making a ton of money. So shut up and play.
3. Say this for the New York media-they caught onto Mangini's act long before the Browns did. They claim that the Jets have taken the Browns to the cleaners this year and it's hard to disagree.
4. Agreed-Sabathia was out of line. But LeBron is smart enough to know that he can't win a ring on the Knicks. Cleveland Cav fans should be a lot more worried about the Lakers.
Pat, have you lost your mind?? You said Rod Hood had some "interesting observations." And what exactly were those "observations?"
"I've never experienced football like that." You call that an observation? What did he say that was concrete? He said nothing specific other than "it never had anything to do with talent." Yeah, right, the guy was cut by 3 teams THIS YEAR and he is now considered to be playing well for a defense that may actually be ranked worse than the Browns.
Pat's not making this stuff up, Loretta, no matter what recent Brady Quinn quotes might imply. No, he's just gleefully googling his arse off searching for anti-Mangini quotes.
i see, rod hood sucks so that makes mangini a great coach.
thanks loretta and the warden for adding your brilliant observations.
terje, I never noticed how much neck fat Sabathia has. I'm serious about this. They showed the back of his neck, and I thought I was looking at my late Aunt Mary. But really, I don't hold it against Sabathia, saying how great New York is. I mean, it's a true statement. He was asked a direct question, he answered it. The guy is walking on air. Why shouldn't he be excited as all hell.
And speaking of all hell, larry d., what happened to you? You've gone over to the dark side.
it just amazes me that mangini drones can only attack the messenger but can't do a g-d thing to defend their positions. it's rod hood and pat's fault that mangini blows harder than jenna jamison.
I've never experienced, visually or otherwise, Jenna Jameson's … uhh … work. But yeah, I don't understand it, either.
Some folks just aren't cut out to be backwater sports columnist groupies, fellas. Don't take it personally.
gotta agree with terje's comments about cc last night. the guy is a jackass, it's not like he was ever treated badly in cleveland, and had he won here (or hell even milwaukee for that matter), i'm sure he would have been treated like a king. to tell lebron that there's no place better than new york is a douchebag move. ah how i wish baseball had a salary cap…but hey this is great, too, getting to watch another decade of new york, boston, or la teams dominate the sport. really that's all that's important, isn't it?
"Some folks just aren't cut out to be backwater sports columnist groupies, fellas. Don't take it personally."
so you choose to be a slovenly doughboy groupie instead? at least eric's getting love from somewhere these days.
I'm not a Mangini groupie at all, terje. You've stated yourself I haven't been singing his praises. I think being so starstruck by Pat has affected your thinking.
"I'm not a Mangini groupie at all, terje."
ah, your an obsessive sports columnist stalker then. glad we got that straight.
I take a potshot now and then, terje, something I'm sure a veteran writer like Pat is used to. Your obsession to defend him so vigorously might be a twist he's not so comfortable with, however.
larry, i'm pretty secure in the knowledge that if one of us is going to be confused for travis bickle it's going to be you.
Uh, oh. A Travis Bickle reference. Now that's a declaration of war. I remember back in elementary school, they used to have atomic bomb drills and make us hide underneath our desks when the warning siren went off. As if hiding underneath my desk was going to protect me from the radiation and shrapnel from a freakin' atomic bomb. But right now, I'm hiding underneath my desk.
I wouldn't worry about it too much, alan. Terje doubles up on the gingerbread lattes on Saturday so he can watch concert videos "with Pat," and sometimes his emotions run a little high with all the excitement and caffeine. It's a tempest in a teapot, really.
I located the secret recipe for that Starbucks gingerbread latte. Just how much does Starbucks charge for this crap?
Ingredients:
Gingerbread Syrup
2 cups water
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup fresh espresso
8 ounces milk, steamed (with a little foam)
Garnish:
whipped cream
ground nutmeg
Recipe:
1. Make the gingerbread syrup by combining water, sugar, ginger, cinnamon and vanilla in a medium saucepan. Be sure the pan is not too small or the mixture could easily bubble over.
2. Bring mixture to a boil then reduce heat and simmer syrup, uncovered, for 15 minutes. Remove the syrup from the heat when it's done and slap a lid on it.
3. Make a double shot of espresso (1/2 cup), using an espresso machine. Use the machine to steam 8 ounces of milk, or heat up the milk in the microwave if your machine does not foam and steam milk.
4. Make your latte by first adding 1/2 cup espresso to a 16-ounce cup. Add 1/4 cup gingerbread syrup, followed by the steamed milk. Stir.
5. Top off the drink with a dollop of whipped cream, and a sprinkle of nutmeg.
You're right, Mangini supporters above. You're just right. Mangini is a genius. He's just a superb coach. We'll have no trouble attracting free agents here. Team morale is and will be at an all-time high. The media will lay at Mangini's feet because of his greatness. He was a great, great hire by a wise, wise football mind, Randy Lerner. Anyone who knocks Mangini *obviously* has a personal grudge against him. Obviously. Because he's great. Really, really great.
That IS what you want to hear, isn't it, Mangini clones?
It's got to be driving terje to the poorhouse, alan, but what can you do except try and support him best you can?
A word from Pat might help.
I have a valid question: If the players themselves support Mangini, then why hasn't even one stood up loud and proud and proclaimed it?
Anybody should be able to read between the lines. The answer is because not only do most players not support Mangini, the very few that do are weak gutless weenies terrified to ostracize themselves from the overwhelming majority. So somebody like Abe Elam, who, I would guess indeed strongly supports Mangini, should buy some really nice business cards which state his title is "Professional Football Player/Registered Sex Offender/Weak Gutless Weenie."
hee hee, he said Weak gutless weenie…
I also said registered sex offender. Every team needs at least one to meet quota.
One?
The article was disappointing, since Hood didn't say much except that "he never experienced football like that". So what the heck does that mean? Maybe Mangini's schemes are just so overly complicated that it's just taking forever for the players to get them down. Maybe Mangini's an ahole. Who knows what he meant? It doesn't seem like all of the players with the Jets hated him. Didn't around 20-25 players come to him to give him their support after he was fired there, and said it wasn't the coaches fault? Of course, a few others blasted him also, so who knows what the players really think?
It'll be interesting to see how the team performs in the 2nd half. I still think there's a chance for 4 more wins since we have Det, KC, Jax and Oak on the schedule. To get 4 wins, we'd have to win 3 of these 4 and steal one of the other 4 games. The schedule was just brutal in the 1st half:
Min 7-1
Den 6-1
Balt 4-3
Cinci 5-2
Buff 3-5
Pitts 5-2
GB 4-3
Chic 4-3
Our opponents are 38-20 thus far, and 31-19 if you take out the games against us. I can see our defense keep improving in the 2nd half, but I really don't know what to expect from our offense. It's just been terrible every game except for the Cinci game. It can't get any worse, can it? It just has to improve. I think the rookie receivers will make strides the rest of this year as they get more playing time. I don't see Cribbs doing much. Maybe Stuckey will help some as he gets more familiar with the offense and the other players. I know many here would like us to lose the last 8 to ensure Mangini gets fired, but I just want us to win as many as possible and if they keep Mangini or let him go, it doesn't matter to me anymore at this point.
I don't know alan, but if they hate Mangini as badly as we're told and Mangini has completely lost the team, why does Pat have to resort to googling for quotes from fringe players on other teams?
Timmy in Fla….couple points…
1. What do you think he meant by "experiencing football like that". By your rationale, he could have just been talking about being 2 hours from Columbus.
Hood stated, "Wow, I've never played football 2 hours from Columbus but I don't want to get into details about that cuz it wasn't a very good situation"??? Come on man, read into the lines there. Use your head.
2. 20-25 Jets came to support him? Any leaders from the Jets do this or was it players looking out for themselves and hoping to come to Cleveland to continue making a paycheck when the alternative would have been being out of the NFL this year.
3. The brutal schedule this year. The excuse every year for this team. If this were a good team, they'd be at least 4-4 if not 5-3 with that schedule. The Bengals have had practically the same schedule if I remember right, are they 1-7 and look downright "brutal" every Sunday?
4. There has not been one bit of positive news to come out of Browns HQ since the hiring of this alleged HC. Why is that?? Quit being apologists for him. When there is this much negativity and indifference and upheaval, how can you folks continue to defend him? Omg.
And larry D., when you're on an NFL team and consistently lose by 30 pts on a weekly basis, consider the HC as having lost the team. They played harder for Romeo, for Chris Palmer, for anyone but this current guy. Google me one thing positive about Mangini from the last 6 months…just one. Players came out and defended Romeo despite his struggles, not one outside of our own fringe players who wouldn't have a job in the NFL outside of this one have said anythng positive about this guy.

can't be done rick. the mangini drone m.o. is to attack anyone who comes out against mangini. there's no logic and reasoning behind the attacks. just cowardice and stupidity.
How am I a Mangini drone, terje and Rick? Even terje admits I haven't written anything good about him. It seems like you fellows have some personal issues that have become conflated with Pat's feelings about Mangini. Maybe you should get together for some Gingerbread Lattes and give poor Pat a break.
"How am I a Mangini drone, terje and Rick? Even terje admits I haven't written anything good about him."
how could you write anything good about him? to do so would make you look more foolish than you already do. so it's attack, attack, attack. you can't defend the indefensible.
I offered a couple pretty mild complaints about what I think is unprofessional coverage, which as a customer of Ohio.com is well within my rights, terje. I haven't noticed you actually defending the coverage, just making hateful remarks toward people you don't know. I don't really get that but have fun.

are you going to cry now?
"I haven't noticed you actually defending the coverage"
obviously your observation skills are in need of a major overhaul.
Larry D. is correct in his observations of "Terje". Pasting comments from the same thread is juvenile and stupid. Terje is a cyber-bully and uses Pat M. as his support.
Larry D. don't worry about what this moron terje writes, he's a punk.
"Pasting comments from the same thread is juvenile and stupid. "
look! i did it again! how juvenile and stupid of me to quote something!
now, i'm going to post anonymously and give myself support. that will look real mature.
Rick, I just pointed out that the article didn't give us any info about what Hood meant, and that because of this, it was disappointing. I wasn't defending Mangini (I even said maybe Hood meant that Mangini was an ahole). What I wrote about the Jets players after he left was just fact, not an opinion. Many came to his defense, some slammed him. As far as the schedule goes, you can't even compare Cini to us. We have a new coach, OC and DC and have turned over about half the roster. Yes, Cinci was not good last year and that was only b/c Carson Palmer missed the whole season. They did not fire their coach, change the offensive and defensive systems or turn over half their roster. If we would have kept the old regime of Romeo and Phil, I'm sure that we'd be much better at this point. I'm thinking 3-5 or 4-4. But, we didn't, so we just have to roll with what we have. I also said I don't care one way or another anymore whether or not Mangini is fired after the season, must have been another point that you missed. I just hope we finally pick a regime and stick with it, and do it soon, because we'll never be any good by firing the coach and/or GM every 1-3 years. Tell me a team that does this and is successful?
terje…Isn't the internet nice, it gives cowards like you(terje is an A-HOLE) a chance to vent to the world.
Only a moron like you(terje is an A-HOLE) would "paste" a comment on the same thread. Paste those comments, terje-A-HOLE.
thanks larry…..uh, i mean solomon.
wrong again you moron(terje). paste that comment…idiot. Do you think before you make a comment? I'm mean do you put any thought to your comments? Take the time and read your comments over the past thirty days. What exactly is your contribution other than parroting others. You(terje) seem to lack any integrity or intelligence.
solomon/larry, your brilliance is blinding us all. ever thought about getting a job as a messiah?
That doesn't even make sense, terje. Do you still have a caffeine hangover from your big Saturday of Gingerbread lattes and watching concert videos "with Pat?"
it wiill make sense once your buzz from huffing air dusters clears.
Only five-plus more days, terje.
Hang in there!
