Look for the street performances he does with a local musician in Amsterdam. You may have already seen them, but if not, they are very affecting. I would link to them here, but I am just too lazy today.
The Boss will be playing the album "Born To Run" in it's entirety (8 songs) and in order during his Cleveland set. Most of his concerts have been about 25-27 songs long.
When I saw him in October, 1980 during the River Tour at the Richfield Coliseum, I was in the 5th row at the side of the stage. Still one of the best concerts I've ever seen (and I've been to A LOT). He played 28 songs and the tickets cost $10.50.
Seriously, how can anybody still respect this guy after he and his band French-mimed their way through 12 minutes of total Super Bowl farce? I used to burn through "Born to Run" until the needle of my turntable bled straight through the vinyl. Now, I can't even listen to it without thinking about what a total fraud he is. I could have lived with the fake "regular guy on the street" stuff when in fact he grew up as white middle class as anybody else. But then selling out with "Born in the USA," ripping off the Guns N' Roses idea with the release of two concurrent albums, albums exclusive to Walmart, playing complete old albums during a live show, and on and on and on and on and on. He and his management have totally morphed into Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Copycats, phonies and total frauds. He sold his soul in exchange for the almighty buck. Whatever happened to artistic integrity? Hell, now even the color of his hair is fake.
Now, about all I can say that equates to a compliment is Springsteen hasn't reduced himself to the level of Pete Townshend. At least I don't think he has. Who knows. Nothing surprises me anymore. Kiddie-porn, Pete? You actually claimed to have been doing "research?" Come on.
Alan, you obviously have no clue about performing live music. They have a matter of minutes to get the stage on the field and everything set up. There is no second take if there is a sound problem. The producers of the Super Bowl mandate that all performers of the National Anthem and America the Beautiful pre-record the songs, including the famous rendition by Whitney Houston. The instruments for the E Street Band may have been pre-recorded for their Super Bowl performance, but there was no lip synching by the Boss.
If he wanted to "sell out", he could have made millions by letting Chrysler use "Born In the USA" for a car commercial. He also didn't release things like "Nebraska", "Tom Joad" and "Devils and Dust" for the money.
He admits the whole "Wal-Mart exclusive" deal was a big mistake.
And Terje, as far as Julianne Phillips, I just quote the Boss himself…
"It's a strange society that assumes it has the right to tell people whom they should love and whom they shouldn't.
I know how those Super Bowl shows are done, Brian D. Well aware. And the Rolling Stones did it real. The sole thing live was Springsteen's own microphone. Nothing else. And they even cut THAT off for part of the time. It's outrageous. Springsteen built his entire career based upon the aura of him live. What in the hell has happened to him?
But Springsteen instead opted to fake it. He's a fake. A fraud. The appendage in the final scene of "Boogie Nights" is more real.
Not to mention now even Springsteen is plagiarizing. He stole "I Was Made For Loving You," and turned it into "Outlaw Pete." Ironic that on several occasions, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons have quietly settled their own past song stealing, and then they themselves were ripped off.
All this ripping of Bruce and no mention of his obvious Van influence which to my knowledge he has never conceded to. I guess Bruce thought reducing vocals to a whisper on occasion, was his idea.
