Beside the Point: The Blog by Patrick McManamon

The media and Delonte West

by Pat McManamon on November 4, 2009

Cleveland Scene's fine sports blog (by Vince Grzegorek) does a fine job here discussing how the media covers Delonte West's situation. And no, it's not fine because I'm quoted. It's merely fine.

If his condition is that bad, then why are they still pushing him out on the court every night? The dude is less than a tossed drink away from Ron Artesting someone in the crowd.

Let's all be totally honest here. This guy West is a million miles of skills away from say … oh, I don't know … a Joe Johnson. However, if Daniel Gibson even earned three cents of that billion-dollar Ferry gift (let alone anybody else on that way too often 1 against 12 team), Gilbert (along with the calming influence of Coach K's Evil Spawn) would have given Austin Carr a direct order to beat West senseless with a DiGiorno Pizza, just long enough to subdue West long enough until Gilbert's real security goons could wrap him up in aluminum foil and toss him into a rubber room at Bellefaire. Then they could extradite his tattooed criminal rear end back to Maryland. With any luck, he'd be tried and sentenced by Judge Roy Bean.

And Craig Ehlo was a million miles of skills away from say … oh, I don't know … a Michael Jordan. Thanks for pointing out the obvious.

That's why JJ makes over $10 million/year more than West.

The point was lost on you, Brian D. West has marginal skills, but the Cavs need him because of Gibson.

And if this was New York and West played out there, the media would hang West out to dry. They'd be a little more vicious about it than reasonably necessary, but at least the facts would be written. As they should have been.

I found Vince Grzegorek's post to be extraordinarily disturbing. It just goes to further what I've been saying about the Northeast Ohio sports press forever. If Roldo Bartimole was a sports fan, he'd be having an aneurysm right about now. Yeah, I know you don't know who he is, but I don't care.

The Northeast Ohio sports media actually conspiring amongst themselves because they're afraid it might make them lose access. And truthfully, they probably would. What a disgrace.

Come to think of it, I don't know who is more of an outrageous dishonest shill: The Northeast Ohio sports media, or that clown Chris Berman. Didn't I just see that goof doing those horrible commercials for that weight-loss stuff? Now, I'm sitting here watching TV, and I see this schmuck telling people to go out and explode their arteries all over Applebee's walls.

Sorry Alan, your point usually does get lost somewhere in those rambling, run-on sentences.

Amen, Brian. Alan's more lost in life than West. The funny, Jewish schtick went out with Milton Berle.

Hey, Joyce, stick with online stalking terje. Please.

Oh, and by the way, apparently you neglected to tell Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David your oh so cerebral theory on the fatal demise of Jewish humor. How much is a stamp these days? That's two letters you'll need to mail.

It was a great piece and I have more respect for those who allude to the affect that Delonte's situation has on the Cavaliers, rather than those who sensationalize it like a gossipy fifth grader.

I think maybe talking to Coby Karl, and how the media covered his illness a couple years ago is another way of looking at things. How do you cover a college-age boy who is dealing with cancer (right?) and respect his privacy?

Do you stick to the game or do you sensationalize? Its not a fun position to be in as a reporter — even in sports.
