The Jets fired their GM right after they hired Mangini. The new guy in charge of the Jets immediately overhauled the Jets roster. The same way the new guy in charge of the Browns immediately overhauled the Browns roster. So why the difference? The Browns had the flu and the Jets didn't?
What I meant is that Mangini wasn't the new GM of the Jets. But Mangini is the new GM by proxy of the Browns. So why the difference. Why did one team get a lot worse while the other team got better?
One comment on the dwhit-terje theory about the Mangini plan being to strip the team down to bedrock. If you want to argue it, you probably should mention that the 2010 draft (in which the Browns now have 11 picks, thanks to the trades) is supposed to be extraordinarily good.
The problem with it. During Randy Lerner's truffle-hunt, the owner was quoted, many times, as saying that he did not feel that 2007 was a fluke, and that he wanted an experienced coach who could get them to play up to their form. He didn't feel the Browns needed a complete rebuild.
Those statement don't invalidate the theory. Perhaps Mangenius persuaded Lerner, after he was hired, to strip the team down. Or maybe he intended to rebuild, but told the owner what he wanted to hear, so he could get hired… and then did what he felt like.
The problem with that notion. There's no reason to think Mangini can judge talent, based on the people he brought in. The "Let's ditch Kevin Shaffer to get John St, Clair and Pork Chop Womack" plan has been a disaster. If Abraham Elam has shown evidence that he is a Pro Bowl talent, I must have been using the john at the time.
Of the picks, Massaquoi and Mack haven't made much impact, Robiskie has been pretty useless…. and last Sunday David Veiune appeared on Are You Better Than A Fifth-Rounder? and lost.
You can talk about Eric Barton being a placeholder, but not the draft picks. Part of the reason they look so bad is they got nothing from the draft.
No, I think, to use astronaut talk, Randy just screwed the pooch… and the Browns are likely to end up BBR.
Also: An interim coach is usually a former college or pro head coach who knows what duties are required, and can get the runaway train into the station with as little mess as possible. If none is on staff (as is the case here), then a coordinator or position coach who is highly respected and players will play for.
Rob Ryan is a loony, but he's certainly better than Brian Daboll and with Rex in New York, it would be semi-credible in the papers.
The only other options would be OL coach George Warhop, DL coach Bryan Cox or ST coach Brad Seely. And the first person to say the "B" word (either one) should be banned.
Anyone else notice that another Ohio State receiver, Brian Hartline, drafted in the FOURTH round, already has 10 catches for 157 yards and got his first start this past Sunday (94 yards in that game)?
Mangenius missed completely on this draft, so don't get excited about the 11 picks next season if he's the one picking.
Speaking of those picks, what did he get? An extra couple of 5's and a 3? Big freaking deal. That's going to turn us around? Anyone notice what he did with his 3 and 5 this year?
It's not Pat McManamon's fault that there is no one on Mangini's coaching staff anywhere near competent enough to take over as interim head coach if Mangini is fired (as he should be). Guess who's fault (or secret plan?) that is? yes….Mangini's.
In calling for Mangini's firing, Pat had to name the coach on the current staff most likely to take over…Ryan. Could Ryan do any worse the Mangini???? Who cares anyway. The season is lost. The Browns are already a joke. Get Mangini OUT OF HERE and move toward getting the right guy in place for next year.
This is yet another example of why Mangini should be fired. His ego/arrogance/or whatever it is caused the Browns to have absolutely the worse staff in the NFL.
alant, you crack me up…Ted Ginn Jr. sucks so much with 18 receptions and 1 TD and 22 "passes not caught". Yet, you are effusive in your praise for Brickhands Edwards who has 19 receptions and 1 TD and 23 "passes not caught."
Yo. Ginn has been doing that all three seasons he's been in the NFL. Never close to the Pro Bowl, only the toilet bowl. And, apparently you're clueless that he's also supposed to be a punt returner. That's why they drafted him, as a return man and as a receiver. He returns punts like you write. Drop and dump. In the meantime, Edwards is earning his money playing for the Jets.
i have a cheese sandwich if some one wants a lil grub to go with the Whine!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! CAVS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Go Steelers wheels! hey hey ho ho missgenies gotta GO!
Based upon that last terje post, I'll assume that Pat's "I thought it kinda made me chuckle a wee bit, well, until it got out of hand and you started impersonating me" post remains unheeded.
Mangini's like foot fungus–it's hard to get rid of. I think that was part of his plan. Hire lousy assistants, so his doctrine can't be challenged. Hopefully this is his Waterloo. Maybe the guy who drove the Davis Hearse can take another spin around Berea.

The only reason Hartline has even been playing is because Ted Ginn sucks so badly. Small world.
"There's no reason to think Mangini can judge talent, based on the people he brought in. "
geoff, i completely agree. one of the many reasons mangini has to go.

Sorry to hit you with actual facts.

alan t. says it is so, therefore it must be true.
