The Browns do not trade Brady Quinn

by Pat McManamon on October 21, 2009

in Brady Quinn, Browns, McManamon

I keep getting different feelings on Brady Quinn. A wise young man who knows football told me this morning that Quinn’s not that talented. Others have said different.

All I know is the Browns and the rest of the Northeast Ohio viewing area exulted when the Browns drafted him. Now he’s junk.

Does this happen with other teams?

I saw a different Quinn in 2008 than I did this year.

Which is why I think the Browns were wise not to trade him.

Quarterbacks are hard to find. The Browns invested two first-round draft choices on Quinn, the one they used to take him and the one they traded to move up and get him. It seems wise to work more with him.

It did not seem prudent to jettison Quinn after 10 quarters.

Now … this could all be moot if the Browns decide to trade Quinn after the season – a very real possibility. At that point it’s a matter of what they receive in the deal.

Will the next Browns quarterback please report security desk?

There have been several theories why Quinn was benched after 10 quarters….

1. They were hoping D.A. could salvage the season before it was too late.
2. They wanted to sit Quinn down before his confidence was irreparably shaken.
3. They didn't want to wait until later in the season to bench him when it would appear to be solely to save $11 million in incentives that would lock in after Quinn took 70% of the snaps.
4. Many players wanted D.A. at QB
5. Quinn got first shot at the starting job because it was one of the stipulations in Lerner hiring Mangini as coach.

I hope that if the Browns are bent on finding a new quarterback for 2010, it is someone with experience. I'd like them to find a veteran — and they don't necessarily have to be from a successful team — who knows how to handle diversity (ie: run for your life, deal with an abysmal offense). Plugging in another fresh face — considering most of the top collegiate QB's all are dealing with some kind of injury or another this season — is just going to lead to the "Second verse, same as the first."

Pat pointed out that Steelers coach Bruce Arians said consistency would help. Either stick with Anderson & Quinn and bolster the offense with some linemen and veteran RBs and WRs (not necessarily from the Jets), or go get a veteran QB.

I think both Quinn & Anderson would be decent-to-good QBs on other teams. But the losing attitude with this franchise is choking everyone to death.

looks like mangini did to quinn what belichek did to bernie kosar. what a shame. we need a caring coach for our team and fans! I feel sorry for the talent quinn has and how it was squashed.

Bernie had a proven track record before his skills diminished….Brady hasn't proven anything yet.

I would bash Alan's comment about Tebow, but I get no joy from bashing a "fake" Alan.

I don't get any joy about bashing a "fake" Alan, either. This stalker clown is nearly as creepy as the guy that kidnapped that girl and then had the Brady Bunch with her.

By the way, Belichick didn't do anything to Kosar, except for being absolutely 100% correct about him. The most overrated player in Bravens history, by far.

By the way, Tebow will not make it big in the NFL. Brian D. is right. If the Southern Cal guy can't make it, then forget Tebow.

Brian D. October 21, 2009 at 3:22 pm

You think you're getting creeped out…the "real" Alan is starting to agree with me. Yikes!

alan t. October 21, 2009 at 3:26 pm

What was I thinking, I will start off by apologizing to all of you that I have offended. I promise to engage in civil manner with of you, except you Brian D.
I'm in awe of your intellect. You have me intimidated, I react like a cornered animal.
Lets find out if the rookies can right the ship. There maybe five rookies starting next weekend. The two linebackers, two recievers and the center. If they play well then, there may be some hope for the future.
Oh, by the way, will the real alan t. stand up.

It's like watching a Cleveland sports version of "Sppokyfish."

Just make sure you guys point the gingification gun at the Alan that isn't wearing the goatee.

Geoff Beckman October 21, 2009 at 4:11 pm

That's supposed to be spelled "Spookyfish".

"All I know is the Browns and the rest of the Northeast Ohio viewing area exulted when the Browns drafted him."

So now I guess I'm no longer considered part of the "Northeast Ohio viewing area", because I certainly didn't "exult", unless that means yell at the TV using swear words.

I'm a big fan of your writing, but don't fall into the "everybody thought" or "everybody said" bag of intellectually dishonest statements.

You know, like the "everybody thought Saddam had WMD's" type crap.

You see where that got us.

ralph October 21, 2009 at 9:08 pm

"It did not seem prudent to jettison Quinn after 10 quarters."

Two thoughts come to mind:

1) You clearly didn't watch those 10 quarters…

2) Where was he "jettisoned" to? Last I checked he's still being paid; I can't drive 10 minutes in a car without hearing his Chevy commercials, and to your own point it's just a matter of time until D.A. gets hurt and Quinn gets another chance. So his best bet is to stay ready, and when the chance comes again, take advantage of it this time.

Allow me, Pat: "All I know is the Browns and the rest of the Northeast Ohio viewing area, well, everybody except Ralph, exulted when the Browns drafted him. Ralph, on the other hand, got hissy and called his brand-new 32" Samsung a *#$*?$*%."

ralph October 21, 2009 at 9:51 pm

It's a Vizio, and it's 37 inches, thank you.

And, my point was that I wasn't alone in not heralding that pick. Not by a long shot. You did notice 21 other teams didn't see fit to use one 1st round pick on him; let alone two 1st round picks.

You also gloss over my main point — how can "everyone said" or "everyone agreed" ever be used in proper context when talking about a city or country?

Answer — it can't.

Extra bonus point — You'll note the guy who "got hissy" was right so far.

alan t. October 21, 2009 at 10:25 pm

I don't gloss over your main point. Writing "everybody but six people" isn't good writing. Implicit in the word "everybody" is that six people are not part of that everybody. It's silly to even talk about. At the time I was indifferent about it. I figured the Browns are usually like Jim Paxson, whiffing on first-round choices, so the GM gets so desperate that he trades away a future one because he's lost confidence in his ability to draft the right players. So technically, I guess this means you and I are two of the six. But it's still not worth talking about because I know what the guy's point was when he wrote it.
