The new Steve Carlton used to pitch in Cleveland

by Pat McManamon on October 19, 2009

in Carlos Carrasco, Cliff Lee, Indians, McManamon

That guy who pitched the shutout for the Philadelphia Phillies last night was some guy named Lee. Said Pedro Martinez of him: “Cliff is some kind of phenom.  It’s just something beautiful to watch. From the outside, especially, when you can see the little details. See, pitching is like an art. And Cliff is actually doing that like one of the best.”
Carlos Carrasco better be able to pitch.

How good was Lee? Here's his pitch chart (thanks to brooksbaseball.net):

And here's another chart showing how he changed speeds:

Yes, he was pretty good.

Here’s a whole page of kind of cool charts and things about Lee’s game, thanks to PitchFX and Brooks.

Carlos Carrasco best be able to pitch.

the cliff lee deal—-the bartolo colon trade in reverse.

I couldn't determine if it was H1N1 that was bothering me last night, or watching Lee pitch in a different uniform.

BTW, Patrick, it won't matter if he can pitch. He's a prospect and all they're ever expected to do is have major upswing and a plus arm. The Indians' "plan" reminds of the Miley Cyrus song "The Climb": "Ain't about how fast I get there / Ain't about what's waiting on the other side / It's the Climb."

Just like it won't matter who the manager of the team is.

I miss the days of Steve Carlton, Jim Lonborg, Gaylord Perry, Phil Niekro, Jim Kaat, Rick Reuschel, Mike Torrez, Ken Holzman, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally, Luis Tiant, Mickey Lolich, Catfish Hunter, Wilbur Wood, Jim Perry, Fergie Jenkins, Diego Segui, Tom Seaver, Claude Osteen, Don Sutton, Rick Wise….etc., etc.

Fans today have no idea the personalities they've missed in the not-so-distant past.

Steve Carlton was great. But the funny thing is, if he had played for the Indians, bozo Cleveland fans would have hated him the first chance they got. How dare a guy not talk to the media!

terje October 19, 2009 at 3:38 pm

hey now, don't short change steve on 1987 when he came to cleveland!

alan t. October 19, 2009 at 3:59 pm

My sincerest apologies, terje.

Alan and Terje….why don't you guys exchange email addresses and stop boring us?

alan t. October 19, 2009 at 11:06 pm

Who is "us," Joyce? Are you doing your impression of Sybil again?

geddy October 19, 2009 at 11:07 pm

thank you Joyce, for the laugh, and for saying what a lot of us I'm sure are feeling. Though why Pat and Terje continue to have some misguided loyalty towards Alan escapes me.

alan t. October 19, 2009 at 11:29 pm

geddy, do you have some of Sybil inside you, too? The two of you sure seem to speak for a lot of imaginary people. Two Sybils, 16 personalities each. So I guess this means the two of you speak for the two of you, plus 30 in your imaginations. Cool.

geddy October 20, 2009 at 10:44 am

yes, you forgot i'm also joehoops and each of your other detractors.

alan t. October 20, 2009 at 2:32 pm

Actually, i meant that i can't stand reading opinions from people who purport to speak for anybody else other than themself, whether i read it in a blog, hear it on tv or the radio, or read it in the letters to the editor in a newspaper. But what you just said is good, too.

terje October 20, 2009 at 4:35 pm

obsessing over the comments like joyce does is utterly braindead. honestly, if a person doesn't want to read what someone says then when they see a post with that persons name just gloss right over it. it's that simple. it's the only way to read the comments at the peedee.

Joyce is fiery and female. What's not to like?

alan t. October 21, 2009 at 2:44 pm

larry, technically and anatomically, Billy Jean King is kinda fiery and female, too.
