The Cavs owner and casinos

I’m not  a big fan of gambling or a proponent of casinos as a way to solve economic problems. Me, I think there ought to be better solutions. That being said, the issue is on the ballot in Ohio this year and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is a major backer. He presents his side in this interview with Cleveland Scene.

I was at my computer trying to clean what I assumed were fingerprints, and then realized it was actually snake oil thicker than Valvoline.

This proposal is by far the best one that has been placed on the ballot. Too bad they wasted so many years with ridiculous proposals while all the states around Ohio passed casino legislation.

It's the same as the issue of developing Cleveland's lakefront like what was done for Chicago. Everyone knows it would be a fantastic idea, but certain forces continue to block what is best for the majority.

You're against gambling? Does the winner of your fantasy football league just get a mural in Berea?

This proposal is by far the best one that has been placed on the ballot? That's like saying Jamal Lewis has been the best of the felons to play on the Browns since their rebirth.

It's a crock. Only young fools and naive suckers believe it's going to be anything more than it really is. Which is a boon for the crooks who own the casinos.

Gateway was once the multi-billion dollar army that was going to lead the lakefront renaissance. Or so the politicians and businessmen told us. How'd that turn out?

  4. Brian D. says:

Well, Lewis IS the best felon playing for the Browns. And who do you expect to make money from the casinos…the gamblers? Talk about naive!

And last time I was downtown, East 4th was the most revitalized area around…even though that's not sayin' much.

You're like all of the other detractors…a bunch of whining, but no solutions.

  5. alan t. says:

That's because there is no solution. It is what it is. Urban blight. Death. But the carnival barkers always have suckers, because suckers never die. So the sleazeballs like Gilbert will build their own little oasis to themselves, partially on the taxpapers' dime, and the area outside the casino will remain dead. Like the movies "Zombieland" and "Shaun of the Dead," but not nearly as funny or entertaining.

And "revitalized?" Only a young white life-long suburbanite who's never experienced anything would say something so silly. Take a long walk through one of those "revitalized" neighborhoods sometime. If you live to type another post, I'll give you a quarter.

  6. Brian D. says:

I'm sure I spend a lot more time in downtown Cleveland than you do. And I probably would be referred to as young…but only if I was standing next to you.

  7. alan t. says:

Which still doesn't answer if you're going to take a long casual walk through revitalized Collinwood and Glenville.

  8. Brian D. says:

Thought we we're talking about "downtown" Cleveland…I've done the Glenville walk before…where's my quarter?

  9. alan t. says:

I just finished this, which pretty much says it all about that scoundrel Gilbert and what the casino is really all about.

It also really rubs me the wrong way that Gilbert reneged on his Detroit deal to move Quicken into a newly built property, purports to care about Detroit, and then supports an issue which will rob Detroit of its invaluable tax dollars courtesy of the Toledo casino. So let's kill what's left of Detroit's schools while we're at it, too.

Seriously, this Gilbert guy is disgusting. But hey, so long as LeBron is still around, it's whatta guy.

So let's take a vote: who would we rather have in Cleveland, Dan Gilbert or Alan T?

  11. alan t. says:

Is that issue on this November's ballot, Tim? I hope not, I was hoping for a November 2010 vote. I'll win by a landslide.

  12. Brian D. says:

C'mon Tim…let's make the vote a little more interesting. How about Alan or Larry Dolan?

  13. Brian D. says:

Or maybe Alan vs. Ted Stepien?

  14. Brian D. says:

Art Modell? I think even Alan would have a shot at winning that one….maybe?

  15. alan t. says:

Again, I win by a landslide, and that's in any year. Although Larry Dolan really isn't a bad guy, just one who has gotten in too deep. Gilbert is like Bush, you don't realize how toxic he really is until you're hoping and praying for the second term to finally end.
