Browns vs. Bills live …

Pre-game

What would a day be without another story about some practice with the Browns. Here's the latest: Rookie James Davis was lost for the season when he aggravated a shoulder injury working after practice without pads. He was hit by someone with pads. The NFLPA is irate. Here's the story from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

First quarter: Is a scoreless quarter a win?

Like an early approach in which the Browns used Jamal Lewis — finally healthy — at fullback and Jerome Harrison at halfback. It worked for a good gain. … But the Browns had to punt. … First quarter has been a punt fest through four possessions. … And it ends a punt fest. … The Browns ran the ball every first and second down and threw on three third downs. All were incomplete; two were catchable. … Cleveland 0, Buffalo 0.

Second quarter: A game neither team deserves to win

Browns have third-and-5; they took Brian Robiskie out and put in Josh Cribbs. … And the pass goes through Chansi Stuckey's hands. … Every one of Derek Anderson's four passes has hit the hands of the Browns receivers and gone through them. … Mike Adams makes a great play on special teams to enable the Browns to down a punt on the 1. … Trent Edwards is really struggling as Bills QB. … Edwards is a much better player on Madden than he is in real life. … Browns still have yet to throw on first or second down. … They finally do with 10:48 left in the half and it's knocked down at the line. … Very nice play by Browns, who use Josh Cribbs on third-and-2. He took inside handoff off motion and gained 31. … Browns get field goal and lead 3-0 even though Derek Anderson is 0-for-6. … The Browns are showing better gap integrity on defense. … Eric Wright just had a perfect chance for an interception and he went for a big hit and was penalized. … Bills false start penalties are painful to watch. … Browns force turnover on downs with 1:20-something left in half and run two plays, content to go into locker room ahead 3-0. … Pa-thet-ic. … On third down, after a Bills timeout, Anderson completes his first pass … to the 46. Thirty-seven seconds remain. Now what do they do? … Drop a pass. … Horrible end to a horrible half. … Neither team deserves to be ahead. Cleveland 3, Buffalo 0.

Third quarter: An embarrassment of a game continues

Bills tie game on field goal. … Tight end Robert Royal drops a pass wide open at the Bills 22. … Possible touchdown. … Royal has had a bunch of drops this season. He apparently is playing with a damaged finger on his left hand. … If he can't catch the ball, why is he playing? … Bills have seven false start penalties. What is the record for one game? … Browns have matched by dropping or not catching seven catchable passes. …  It's hard to imagine watching a worse game. … And the teams trade interceptions. … Why do the poor folks in the Great Lakes region have to endure this game? … Something nearly inexplicable happened. The Browns had to punt on their 15. The Browns wanted to punt with the wind. So they waited as time ran out on the field. Buffalo for some reason did not put a punt return team on the field. The Browns could have snapped the ball with no punt return on the field and run for 50 yards. They stood there. Buffalo never put its defense on the field. Finally Buffalo called timeout. This game is an embarrassment. Cleveland 3, Buffalo 3.

Fourth quarter: The Browns win!

The Browns starting quarterback right now is 2-for-13. … Dave Zastudil is having one heck of a game. … He's had two punts downed at the 1-yard-line. … Another false start penalty for Buffalo. … That's eight, two from the one-half yard line. … Buffalo punts from the end zone and Cribbs lets it bounce and it rolls to the 27. … What a pathetic, terrible game. … Jamal Lewis is playing well — he's invigorated. … The Browns have to punt form the 50. … And Zastudil does it again, putting the Bills at the four while punting with the wind from midfield. … Trent Edwards should give back his paycheck. … An incomprehensible roughing-the-passer penalty on Corey Williams is called. NFL players are not allowed to tackle the quarterback. … The officiating in this game is as pathetic as the play. … Amazingly horrible call. … Bills get their ninth false start. … And Josh Cribbs drops a pass. … Zastudil punts, the ball rolls, Roscoe Parrish bobbles and the Browns recover at the 20. … Fitting this game will be decided by a mistake. … Jamal Lewis third-down run makes it first-and-goal at the 5. Bills have no timeouts. This game should be over with Browns winning their first of the season. … Billy Cundiff lines up for a field goal shorter than an extra point. … With 23 seconds left, the Browns lead 6-3. … It's a win, and you take it. But there was not much to be proud of in this game from either of these teams. Cleveland 6, Buffalo 3.

I told you Derek would give this team the best chance to win. He almost did it last week against Cinci. This week against a great Bills team, Derek made plays and got the 'W'. He will continue to lead us as this streak progresses.

  2. Bernie Kosar's Bread Saw says:

I told you Chansi Stuckey can attract double teams and stretch defenses like Braylon Edwards.

  3. Sean says:

Yes, a real groaner… But we won. I would have liked to see Derek spread it around a little more.. Uh, the passes that is… I think Stuckey only had one pass thrown to him, and Robo didn't have one thrown to him. I'm sure the wind made things tricky there today. Not an excuse but.. Also, why didn't Jerome Harrison get more opps to run? Jamal looked good, but use Jerome.

I have just completed the mathematical calculations, and I have scientifically determined that Mangini now has as many playmakers in his starting 22 as there are dodo birds living in my attic.

But hey, at least Winslow's and Edwards' replacements are obedient. Bumbling, but obedient. Like retarded golden retriever service dogs.

  5. Marshall says:

2 for 17. 22 yards. Lowest EVER since the stats have been compiled (according to Elias Sports), and this is our "better" QB? That means the Cleveland Clowns have NONE!

I live down in Mount Vernon, and the local CBS had the Bengals on. I was actually glad I didn't get to see this train crash in progress.
