Beside the Point: The Blog by Patrick McManamon

"The happiest human being on the planet …"

by Pat McManamon on October 8, 2009

in Braylon Edwards, Browns, McManamon

From Fox’s Jay Glazer: "I know Braylon Edwards is pretty much the happiest human being on the planet right about now, and I'd say that Chansi Stuckey is pretty much the saddest."

Chansi's last 3 tweets:

"today was really good. had alot of fun on the field today. just got to keep my head in this playbook to try and be ready for sunday"

"Great family atmosphere here at the browns facility. Players and coaches are great"

"Ohio!!! Just landed and pumped to get started"

Yeah, he sounds pretty distraught.
And I doubt Jason Trusnik is too broken up about coming home.

Precisely what did you expect his "tweet" to say? Think, man. Front offices now monitor Twitter. His audience is the Browns front office. Did you expect him to say he's going to find a ladder and take a flying leap off the Berea City Hall roof? His motives are Mangini's motives. Self-preservation.

Sean October 8, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Exactly, Brian.

Sean October 8, 2009 at 7:41 pm

Why wouldn't he be happy? He has a chance to be a number 1 receiver and prove himself. Braylon hasn't been a threat to anyone, unless he made an Allstate commercial, and why anyone would call him a #1 anything is absurd. He is definitely #2. IYKWIM

alan t. October 8, 2009 at 7:51 pm

Stuckey has zero chance to be a #1 receiver. Because if literally the sixth to the last pick of an entire draft is going to be the #1 receiver on any roster other than the roster of an expansion team, then "happiness" isn't even worthy of discussion.

Brian D. October 8, 2009 at 7:59 pm

Exactly, Alan…draft position is an irrefutable indication of talent. Ergo, Spergon Wynn being drafted 183rd overall and Tom Brady 199th in 2000.

alan t. October 8, 2009 at 8:04 pm

#1 Receivers on a good team? Actually, it usually is.

Joyce B October 8, 2009 at 8:07 pm

You know, Alan, it's not that you're not right a lot of the time, it's that you lead such a negative existence. I feel bad for you, I really do. Have you ever seen the bright side of anything? I realize that sports in this area leaves little to be optimistic about, but you reach new lows. I'd advise you to see a doctor, but, I don't believe in that either. Good luck.

alan t. October 8, 2009 at 8:15 pm

Hey, Joyce, the Browns' PR department depends on folks like you. Keep smiling!

Brian D. October 8, 2009 at 8:39 pm

I'd take last round picks T.J. Houshmandzadeh or Marques Colston over Braylon any day.
And to clarify…there were 20 players chosen after Stuckey…not 5.

alan t. October 8, 2009 at 9:00 pm

All anybody needs to know is that the 235th selection of the 2007 draft was Stuckey. The really hilarious part in an incredibly pathetic 2009 Ironic Sports Moment of the Year kind of way? The 234th selection was made by the Browns. The selection? Syndric Steptoe.

I rest my case.

ClayMatthewsSchoolforLaterals October 8, 2009 at 9:31 pm

But I love all those Stuckey's road stops all over the Midwest. You can buy gasoline, get a cold drink, and the peanut brittle is awesome. That's his family, isn't it?

alan t. October 8, 2009 at 10:40 pm

Check this out. I am now convinced that Mangini should be arrested for complicity to commit grand larceny. If I could find a Vegas prop bet for it, I would wager $20 at whatever odds that Edwards will go to the Pro Bowl either this season or next, and would wager another $20 at whatever odds that he'll catch a touchdown pass this Monday night. Compared to what the Jets received, the Browns got robbed.

Hey Pat? What's the over\under on articles beating a dead horse?

Brian D. October 9, 2009 at 5:11 am

I'm sorry Alan….you are correct. Being drafted in the first round guarantees a great career…

1999 1 Tim Couch
2000 1 Courtney Brown
2001 3 Gerard Warren
2002 16 William Green
2003 21 Jeff Faine
2004 6 Kellen Winslow II
2005 3 Braylon Edwards
2006 13 Kamerion Wimbley
2007 3 Joe Thomas, 22 Brady Quinn
2008 — — No Pick — —
2009 21 — Alex Mack

And Joyce…get off of Alan's lawn!

@ Brian , haven't you learned yet that Mcmananmon and his two negative sidekicks that lurch in here don't actually know anything about contracts or salary caps ,they just look for ammo to bash a local team on every turn .For some reason they keep assuming Edwards wanted to be here and he would have played his heart out for us and then not ask for a big raise at the end of the year.
They won't admit to being closet Stoolers fans, our only hope that is that the ABJ will lose enough readership from Pat that they will put a real sports columist in his place and let him report on knitting or something far more suited to his talent.

Elizabeth October 9, 2009 at 7:42 am

I wonder if part of Jay's commentary has anything with the love-fest from the national media towards Mangini, regardless of the moves.

I'd be willing to bet if Mangini cured cancer, the national media would jump all over him because some helpless lab mice had to take one for the team in the process. Its not just the local guys who aren't big fans, its the national guys from the NY area who didn't like his style. (I'm not a big fan of a lot of things either, but still…)

I wonder if the national media didn't have Cleveland to dump on who they'd go after all the time. Detroit is getting the pity vote regardless of what happens because apparently that the only place in the country where the crappy economy has had any kind of affect on things; Chicago is cool; and Pittsburgh tends to get things done.

Rick October 9, 2009 at 8:16 am

Brian – you sound like you actually believe those guys didn't have "great" careers cuz they were bad players? Granted, none of them may have amounted to anything playing for any team in the league but I'm inclined to believe that at least half would have had decent careers with many other organizations and at least 2-3 would have been stars if they were in one of the top 5 organizations in the league.
Being drafted just means you have to be a truly special player to even have a chance to come out of the dark abyss you were drafted into to have a chance to get to the summit.
I can't think of a single superstar in the league over the last 10 years who would've amounted to anything had his first tour of NFL duty started in Berea. Not one.

terje October 9, 2009 at 9:27 am

wile e, lay off the lithium. salary caps, contracts??? none of that has to do with why the trade of edwards is trash. mangini values the talent like a guy who sticks around the poker table with a losing hand far too long. the giants offered a better deal for edwards in april. some other team would have probably topped the jets offer had mangini held out a little longer like anyone with common sense would have. he devalued edwards, he devalued quinn….the mangenius is only interested in selling lerner his 4 year plan. rex ryan had him pegged.

i invite every mangini supporter to my house for a poker game. bring your bankroll, jewelry and family heirlooms. i'll make sure to provide your greyhound bus ticket back home.

BrianD, precisely what does your post have to do with anything I've written? I have absolutely no idea. I'm talking about #1 receivers drafted deep in the last round of a draft. 9,999 times out of 10,000, the very best you get is a role player, if he even makes it in the league. Not a #1 receiver. That guy with the wacky Muslim name, or whatever type of name it is, it going to be the new #1 receiver, but my point was role players are a dime a dozen. A point which somehow eluded you.

Brian D. October 9, 2009 at 2:33 pm

@Alan, Let's see…I sarcastically said:
"draft position is an irrefutable indication of talent"
You replied:
"#1 Receivers on a good team? Actually, it usually is."

I guess your point did elude me if you were not referring to #1 receivers needing to be drafted high.

And here's some Braylon prop bets that are available to bet on:

Braylon Edwards – Total Receiving Yards Week 5 vs. the Miami Dolphins
over 50.5 (+110)
under 50.5 (-140)

Braylon Edwards – Total Receiving Yards in the 2009 NFL Regular Season as a member of the New York Jets
over 600 (-105)
under 600 (-125)

Braylon Edwards – Total TD's in the 2009 NFL Regular Season as a member of the New York Jets
over 4.5 (-105)
under 4.5 (-125)

Don't sound like Pro Bowl numbers to me.

alan t. October 9, 2009 at 2:43 pm

#1 receivers don't need to be drafted high. But they almost are never drafted in the last round. They are role players or waiver wire material. Guys on the 1999 Cleveland Browns.

And I saw those prop bets yesterday, betting on them was closed. Nothing in those prop bets that interested me, anyway.
