Someone suggests the Cavs might not be all that this season

by Pat McManamon on October 8, 2009

in Cavs, LeBron, McManamon, Shaq

It's been out a while, but it's still worth reading … One SI.com analyst is not all ga-ga over the Cavs acquisition of Shaq. He writes: “Aside from his abysmal free-throw shooting, the biggest flaws in Shaq's game are defending the high pick-and-roll and executing quick rotations in the paint. Put simply, he doesn't remove the Cavs' most glaring vulnerability against teams they must beat to make their season a success and foster the loyalty of their homegrown superstar.”

Hey Pat, how about finding something bad to write about more stuff we like.. Maybe how puppys can carry salmonila, or how birthday parties are lethal, the sun might explode one day, and how Christmas is evil, and how sex can cause heart attacks? You are a real asset to the planet!
Thanks!

Sean, did you hear?…LeBron's signing with the Knicks next year.

Alex F. October 9, 2009 at 4:45 am

Sean, Why would LeBron leave? $? Cleveland can and will match or beat any offer. Prestige? Look at New York's commitment over the past years to winning… Marketing? LeBron reportedly is number 2 in China behind Kobe without leaving Ohio. Championship potential? Cleveland is closer than New York. LeBron's 7th season, at his level, he is best served by staying put. He is a local and has no reason to go to New York…financial or more importantly otherwise. He is King here and has NO reason to go to New York. Opinions are like ….. everyone's got one and they all stink.

If doing everything short of renaming Cleveland Jamestown doesn't "foster the loyalty of their homegrown superstar", I doubt that any off season signings would influence him much either.

Bob2 October 9, 2009 at 4:50 am

And by the way, the writer you linked has all of 4 articles in his archive. He's been with SI less than a month. At least as an NBA "Insider".

Sorry Alex…Pat's pessimistic outlook got the better of me.
Actually, I believe LBJ will sign for another 3 years with the Cavs.

Pat you are the sourest sportswriter in town. And it's hard to make that kind of impression in this town. None the less, your taste in women that you are old enough to be their father is pretty good. Remember the half plus seven rule! And stop sneaking your wife's VS catalog into the bathroom!

Negative and cowardly ,what a trait.

Wile E. Coyote October 9, 2009 at 7:34 am

Scratch that ,wrong website.

I'm in "wait and see" mode. While Shaq will probably be an upgrade over Z in the middle (since Z pretty much refused to play "in the middle"), I'm still most concerned about hitting the open shot. Shaq and LBJ will draw a lot of double-teams, but if our guards and forwards continue to clang bricks like they did in the playoffs, we aren't going anywhere. That's just the facts, man. The name of the game is putting the ball in the basket.

terje October 9, 2009 at 9:29 am

why worry about shaq when mike brown has yet to prove he can coach in the playoffs?

larry d. October 9, 2009 at 11:00 am

Last I saw Cavs big men were getting pushed into the second row under the basket. Switching and defending the high pick and roll weren't so much the issue against Orlando.

drew October 9, 2009 at 11:07 am

Terje,
He did lead them into an NBA Finals, that counts for something. Is he the best? Heck no…but he can coach.

Sean October 9, 2009 at 11:49 am

So if someone "suggested" that Pat was a highly functioning retard, would that merit an article?

alan t. October 9, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I can show you a whole laundry list of coaches with a questionable rep that "led" a team into the NBA Finals. I'm not sure what it proves by "leading" a LeBron-led squad in what, at the time, was arguably the worst conference in professional sports history.

And Sean, if you're going to continuously post for the sole sake of insulting the intrepid columnist, at least attempt to make your stuff witty and clever. I know you're neither a wordsmith nor a comedian, but heck, at least make the effort. Because it now stands, it's as subtle as this.

Not the end-all be-all of arguments, Alan. Many teams have had a superduperstar that got into the Finals, only to be wiped out.

As for all of the hate, it comes from people that are too afraid to get into an honest-to-goodness debate with anyone face-to-face, so they hide on comments, forums, and blogs. It's that…or their daddies were mean to them. So which is it, Shawn?

Sean October 9, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Hey, nobody's hating. Just pointing out that just because someone says something, doesn't mean it merits a column or a blog. And what is the sense of debating an opinion merely for the sake of stirring up negativism, nay bob? And since we are all on here posting in cyberspace, none of us are face to face debating each other. So Drew, I think your comment speaks waaaay more about your mental stability than it does mine. And my daddy was plenty nice to me.. But not nearly as nice as your mama was.

Drew October 9, 2009 at 7:16 pm

Shawn,
Good one. My 6-yr old nephew teach you that?

Pat doesn't work for the Browns; he works for an independent news organization. Positivity has nothing to do with it. He is a columnist, he is paid to write his opinion, not what makes all Browns fans feel better about cheering for a bad team.

Drew October 9, 2009 at 7:17 pm

And Shaaaaawwwwn,
I don't call names, like "retard". Or people's mamas. I actually try to engage in valid points.

Sean October 9, 2009 at 9:22 pm

For the record Drew, and so to make it as obvious as I can since your higher intelligence can't seem to pick up simple ideas, the "valid point" that I am making is that just because somebody somewhere suggested something, ( the Cav's not being all that ) does not make it news worthy or worthy of discussion. And if you read my comment again I did not call anyone anything, merely pointing out that if someone did would that make it news worthy. And I certainly did not call you peoples mama, because that makes absolutely no sense..Exactly what valid point were you making? And hopefully your nephew can teach you a few things, like how to read and understand the English language.
