Oh, neglected to write ... so what about Dawson? He's a freakin' kicker. Where else in sports can a guy get hurt, and then some other guy is literally grabbed out of a grocery store squeezing melons for freshness, and put into a game-winning or game-losing situation in front of 60,000 to 70,000 people? Only in the NFL.

And Rogers? The guy is already starting to fade. He's on his last fat legs. One sack so far this season, a lousy one solo tackle last game. Big deal, he blocked a couple of kicks. Perhaps if the kicker didn't kick with the trajectory of a kid playing paper football in study hall, the Browns' resident blimp wouldn't have touched it.

And Cribbs? Who cares? He already threw a fit, and it got him absolutely nowhere.

Tim, seven years of being paid as a head coach is actually quite long, not brief. Then you go through the process of being an assistant or whatever for 10 years, and then you get hired as head coach again. Happens all the time.

Who cares what the rest of the locker says? Irrelevant. They're the hired help. The only guy that matters is Lerner. If Mangini has Lerner's cooperative ear, he's got it made. It's like any other workplace. If he can get the only man who is relevant to this situation to buy whatever he is selling, then nothing else matters.

Alan,
I get that, and in fact expected his intention was to be less competitive this season. But I cant imagine he wants the rest of the locker room complaining/protesting with the hopes of getting shipped out. Dawson, Rogers, and Cribbs come to mind. That would be his second mutiny in his breif coaching carreer. That would be horrible for his current and future job security.

"In an ironic but rather ingenious twist, by intentionally making the team worse rather than better, he is actually creating job security for himself. These moves are being made strictly for himself and for self-preservation. He may come of as a dictatorial schmuck, but this guy is actually quite savvy and shrewd. There is a method behind this madness."

you should bring this statement down from a mountain on an engraved stone tablet for these idiot browns fans to read. this is EXACTLY what he is doing. and rex ryan was implying it when he talked about the "4 year plan".

cleveland has seen a lot of sport stupidity through the years but mangini takes the cake.

The message being sent would be as follows: "Mr. Lerner, it will take time to clean up Savage's mess, I first need to rid my roster of all of his players. This is a process that requires continuing patience. Let's wait to see what we get with those draft choices." By ridding himself of Edwards (who is going to kill for the Jets, you watch) and Quinn in exchange for next to nothing, he is creating plausible excuses for his end of the season review with Lerner. In an ironic but rather ingenious twist, by intentionally making the team worse rather than better, he is actually creating job security for himself. These moves are being made strictly for himself and for self-preservation. He may come of as a dictatorial schmuck, but this guy is actually quite savvy and shrewd.
Hmm.. I agree this could/should happen, but ....
I'm not sure what message trading Quinn would send the locker room. Squeaky wheel?

After being thoroughly devalued. And does anybody really naive and/or dumb enough to believe that Quinn really is hurt by Edwards leaving? I'll say this much for Quinn: he has a great head of hair, and he is incredibly shrewd. He wore a billboard saying "TRADE ME BEFORE THE DEADLINE, YOU A-HOLE!" without ever having to say a word.

anther guy who's value has been decimated by eric mangini's mismanagement of the qb situation. quinn's trade value looked a heck of a lot better after last season's stint instead of now after he's looked like crap under the worst coach in the nfl.
