Why didn't this happen last season?

by Pat McManamon on October 7, 2009

in Braylon Edwards, Brian Robiskie, Browns, Mohammed Massaquoi

The case could be made that Braylon Edwards should have been jettisoned last season. Problem was the same coaching staff that tried to work with him last year saw him in 2007, when he put up amazing numbers.

In fact, it might have been the greatest year ever by a Browns receiver: 80 receptions, 1,289 yards, 16 touchdowns.

Too, getting rid of Edwards last season meant playing Syndric Steptoe. I'm not sure any coach wants to hang his future on Syndric Steptoe.

At least this season Eric Mangini gets to hang his hat on his two draft picks: Mohammed Massaquoi and Brian Robiskie.

thank god b-easy or whatever the heck nickname he is using these days is gone. Yeah so massequoi isn't going to get good looks now that defenses don't have to double cover anyone–who cares. whether he has a 140 yard, 8 catch game or is shutout for no catches, the end result is that the browns lose. as for his "development," i don't expect it to take off until mangini's reign of blubber is over (that is of course, if massequoi is even with the browns or in the NFL at that point). braylon clearly never wanted to be in cleveland (remember that "show" of his where he talked about going to miami or something), and he was going to be gone after this year anyways. the thing that annoys me about this trade, though, is who the hell wants more of these jets players. look what they've done so far. if mangini's idea is that these ex-jets will spread his philosophy in the locker room, it's obviously hopeless, given the results so far. i don't care how many jets he imports, charging thousand-dollar fines and making rookies take a 10 hour bus ride while you fly isn't going to win you any support.

had they done this trade with the giants when it was offered they could have received a 2nd rounder and hixon or manningham. then just MAYBE they wouldn't have wasted 2 second round picks on receivers and there would be ONE playmaker who currently plays in cinci at linebacker.

but hey, we're not supposed to think about what SHOULD have happened. we're just supposed to buy into "the process" and watch eric mangini attempt to destroy a franchise.
