Beside the Point: The Blog by Patrick McManamon

The Broncos were proud to win this way?

by Pat McManamon on September 16, 2009

in Browns, McManamon

Broncos fans are actually celebrating their opening-game win. But it’s worth keeping in mind that were it not for the flukiest of fluke plays (below), the folks in Denver would be asking many of the same questions about their team that are being asked about the Browns right now. In fact, Denver would have it worse … because the Browns lost to a team considered Super Bowl-caliber and the Broncos would have lost to Cincinnati.

(By the way … this is now fixed … Hate when that WYSIWIG and HTML get confused … sorry, folks)

I can't stand it when teams win games by pasting HTML code into the WYSIWYG window on their blogs. Teams should get down in the trenches and click on the "Show HTML codes" icon.

David R in Colorado September 16, 2009 at 2:35 pm

Pat – huh? What on Earth are you talking about?

Nobody on the team, or any of the fans I've heard or read on the blogs has said ANYTHING about the team "being proud" to win that way. It was a fluke. We know it. You know it. Everyone knows it. But we'll take it. Being a Broncos fan since 1973, and having watched almost every game played since that time, I can tell you that they've lost a bunch of games on flukes, including Corey Dillon running for about 37,448 yards on them just a couple years ago.

Flukes are just a part of football there buddy. Either accept it or not, but don't make words up for people – generally that's accepted as lying.

In that case, here ya go, David R in Colorado. Aside from all the other synonyms of "proud" in these posts, please take notice of the word "proud" expressly used in the first comment. http://xr.com/051

So you were wrong. You live in a small closed universe. Make like Timothy Leary and expand your mind, man. Groovy.

Hutch September 16, 2009 at 2:59 pm

I wouldn't call it lying. I'd call it a relatively benign example of a strawman, which has long been a preferred technique of lazy sportswriters.

wah wah wahhhhh my team lost so i have to pick on the bronco fans.

Lesson learned Pat. Cry all you want…We won.. fluke or not WE WON.. dont cry about it, we know it was a fluke play.. the nation knows it was a fluke play.. it isnt hard to figure that one out.. unless it was for you?.

Simple of this fact is, we got the win on one of footballs most noticable plays.. cept that happens to be an INT.. but no one calls that fluke no? lol of course not only when the offense happens to catch it.. keep whinning, you need to pick your own flaws before picking on other teams flaws.

Focus on your browns n not us broncos.

WAHHH WAHHH WAHHHHH

David R in Colorado September 16, 2009 at 3:09 pm

LOL – well pardon me Alan for not checking EVERY board before I posted. But let me get this straight – you and Pat think that a fan should only celebrate and be happy about about a win, perhaps even "proud" of their team, only if there was no good fortune associated with the win?

If so, then I'm of the opinion that you hold a very unreasonable expectation about things, and it also explains much of the general attitude and demeanor of the Bengals and Browns fans I've known over the years, both here and there. Kind of makes me wonder also why you're checking the Broncos fans blog – I've never seen the one for the Bengals or the Browns.

Jason from Denver September 16, 2009 at 3:09 pm

It doesn't matter how you win the game. I can see how Browns fans might be channeling anger from past "fluke" plays, IE The Fumble. Lets be honest, the Browns will never be a champion. While its fun for the Browns fans to try and compare themselves with other elite organizations, most years the best the Browns can hope for is to be average. Good luck in your season and recovering from beginning the season 0 and 2.

Eric September 16, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Jason…seriously, your team sucks. The Browns will throttle the Broncos 37-17. Write it down.

alan t. September 16, 2009 at 3:18 pm

David R, I never check the Broncos fans blogs. I never check any Browns and Bengals fan blogs, either. Just thought it would be funny if I found one with the word "proud" in it. Took me about 8 seconds. Like Steve Martin used to say, comedy is not pretty.

David R in Colorado September 16, 2009 at 3:21 pm

Well Alan, you must be so, er, uhmn, proud :) I'm just delighted for you.

Hutch – I was going to go into an explanation of the straw man argument, along with perhaps several other of the more common fallacious arguments that are often used, but it seemed to me that it really was just going to lead into a urinary Olympic event that would be met with vulgar and/or childish responses. The bottom line is that their fans are steaming over it, and nothing is going to alter their view that they've been robbed. Heck, after being without Elway for the last 10 years, I'm used to frustration :)

Pat McManamon September 16, 2009 at 6:11 pm

David … I did not word things properly. I have no problem whatsoever with Broncos folks celebrating. They should celebrate. Their team won. My point was only to show the thin difference between winning and losing, between being 1-0 and 0-1. That's all. My bad.

Geoff B September 16, 2009 at 9:42 pm

Haters from Cincinnati or Cleveland or wherever,

BRONCOS WON. period. You can talk it up any way or say whatever you like. Broncos 1-0 Bengals 0-1. Im not proud of the win. I would of rather seen us win by 14-20 points. But when it comes to Ws ill take them anyway they come. Im sure that if it was Ochocinco catching a tip ball with 28 seconds left and running it in from 87 yards you guys would be sittin there happy as all get out that you won. maybe even proud since you guys won. you win…what? like 6 games average for the past 20 years if its even that good? So suck it up Broncos do what they normally do. win the first game of the year. Bengals continue to lose. Broncos will win next week for their home opener like they normally and the Browns will continue to lose like they normally do esp. to the Broncos i think their overall record against the Broncos is like 5-20? So suck it up and realize Ohio football greatness ends at the College level and Broncos won week 1.

This discussion reminds me of something i once heard.

Do you know why the trees lean north in kentucky?…

alan t. September 16, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Why do the trees lean north in Kentucky? Hell, I don't know. Does it have anything to do with Rick Pitino and morning wood?

David R in Colorado September 17, 2009 at 8:25 am

Hi Pat – thanks for the reply, and no worries. Thanks for clarifying and have a great weekend.

JulioFranco September 17, 2009 at 9:04 am

Wow!

Broncos fans think they have a chance of being a good team this year?

With Kyle Orton? With Brandon "Drop 'em so they trade me" Marshall? With a rookie head coach?

They DO know the Bengals are not the Vikings, or even the Seahawks, don't they?

The name which is missing above, which would legitimately provide them with some expectation of reasonable hopes, is Mike Shanahan. Buh-bye Mike!

Don't Bronco fans understand that the rest of the country views the Broncos much as the Browns are viewed – as not much better than an expansion team?

If you rebuild it, they will come.

Vincent M September 17, 2009 at 1:38 pm

JulioFranco

The difference here is the Broncos are a winning franchise with several superbowl appearences and back to back SB wins. The Browns have never accomplished anything worthy. Right now our team is going through a reformation and I don't really expect them to have a stellar season but this is the NFL and you never know what can happen.

You sound seriously clueless about football. Do you look at anything in a logical rational manner or do you just pull stuff out of your ***?

Mike Shanny is gone and needed to be. We've given him much longer then a coach is usually going to get, we had several chances to make it through the playoffs and Mike blew it.

Anyways Rome wasn't built in a day, I will support my team as I always have through the best and worst times.

David R in Colorado September 20, 2009 at 6:03 pm

Eric – you out there to explain your post of 9/16 at 3:22 now? Seems your prognostication was incorrect, so what say you? Hmmm? Waiting……
