Eric Mangini has not announced that Brady Quinn will be the starting quarterback this weekend against Minnesota.
Which means, of course, that Derek Anderson (or perhaps even Brett Ratfliff) could be the starter.
Which means that Minnesota will have to prepare for different players.
That's the thinking at least.
At some point, this news will get out, but the Browns will pretend to keep the veil of secrecy on the decision. It'll be as effective as the old "Cone of Silence" on Get Smart. But oh well.
I’ve written enough about this. I don’t see the Vikings changing their defensive approach or planning at all as they get ready for the opener. They are going to stuff the run and go from there. That’s their style, scheme and approach. And I don’t see it changing for Quinn, Anderson, David Mays or Clint Longley. Perhaps I’m wrong. Perhaps there’s one play that might matter. But I doubt it.
Teams see film on every player, every game. Teams break down the play of each opponent's individual player. They know if he keeps a towel on the field or if he doesn't. They know if his first step is to the left or right. They know just about all they can know, because they exchange film and they see it.
The Vikings will prepare for the offense. Mangini is the coach and it's his call, and that's fine. But it's hard to believe it will make that much of a difference.
Whatever.
It will not affect my preparation, I'll tell you that. I expect Quinn to start, and I’m preparing for Quinn to start. All my week’s preparation will be on Quinn. That’s where my focus will be.
Here’s a philosophy for the Browns as they approach the opener: Forget subterfuge, games, trickery and public deception and just go win the stinking game.
Just. Go. Win. The. Game.
Amen.
If this plan backfires on Sunday and the offense looks flat and boring then Mangini will be the one to blame regardless of who is at QB.
If they come out and win with a strong performance on offense then he will be Mangenius with a free pass to play mind games and trickery all year long.
The "process" had better lead to solid preparation and a win this Sunday. I would hope for the better but my hope well ran dry years ago.

This all DOES affect my plans.
Since Quinn is the likely starter, I'll drive on down to the local Browns Backers meeting establishment here in Austin on Sunday morning to watch the game.
If the choice is Anderson, I will promptly leave.
If the choice had been announced already as Anderson, I would stay home and mow my dead grass. This, in spite of the fact that I subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket.
