Noticed that Charles Gibson is giving up the broadcast on ABC. He’ll be replaced by Diane Sawyer. Sawyer is kind of to ABC what Sting used to be to the NFL. Any time the NFL needed someone, they’d bring Sting out to sing, even if it was like the 38th time in the past three years. Bring out Sting. Same with Sawyer, who next year may host Cooking With the Stars.
At any rate, Gibson’s retirement made me wonder: How many people still watch the evening news. There was a time when I scheduled my day around it. Certain places I lived, it was nice because you could watch one network at 6:30, another at 7. That really was the way to find out what was going on in the world.
Well … that and Saturday Night Live of course.
Now … with the news explosion that has hit the internet, does anyone really watch anymore? If Charles Gibson is alone in a forest and gives the news, will anyone know what he said? (Please, no jokes about how many people read newspapers; this is a newspaper site here.)
How about it? Anyone out there watch?

Sure I do, when I have nothing else to do, or it is raining, or I've seen the rerun of 2 and 1/2 Men too many times. In general I don't bother. I can't tell you who the anchors for the 3 networks are anymore. I'm not sure why I don't watch, I guess I find it to me more cheerleading than news reporting, it is so non-offensive it is bland.
Not to date myself in a major way, or anything, and probably next to nobody here will know what I'm talking about, but I like to amuse myself. So sue me. This reminds me of those jokes that made me giggle when Jessica Savage drowned. There were a whole bunch of funny ones, but it's been 26 years, I can only remember two. 26 years later, they still make me giggle.
Q: Why did Jessica Savage drown?
A: Because she was an anchorwoman.
Q: Who could have saved her?
A: Roger Mudd
Oops, misspelled her name. It was Savitch. Oh, who cares. The jokes were funny in 1983, and they're still funny.
I suggest that alan t. be banned from posting for 2 weeks for his above indiscretion. I was around in 1983. Those 'jokes' had no comedic value then and they 'shirley' don't now. And, I will keep calling him Shirley.
See…That's funny!
