Jayson Stark spends a lot of time talking about all the things Pete Rose did wrong, how his actions showed absolutely no remorse for putting himself in the box he’s in for gambling on baseball and on his own team. Then he says that Pete Rose’s is the saddest story he’s covered.
Saddest?
The murder of Lyman Bostock was sad. The suicide of Donnie Moore was sad. The recent death to cancer of a former Red Sox prospect is sad.
Rose made his choices. Now he lives with them. He’s not in the Hall, nor should he be. And it’s not really sad in the least.
Not to me at least.
Olin, Crews, and Ojeda.
Yeah – how about Dravecky, or a guy like John Smiley who broke his arm in 302 different places throwing a ball? Even a Thurman Munson type.
There's nothing sad about a guy like this
What about Lou Gehrig slowly dying. Or Tony Horton trying to kill himself. Or Travis Hafner doing both. Or, the saddest story of all, the day Morganna the Kissing Bandit retired.
Perhaps he meant that it was sad that this dirtbag continues to clamor to be recognized only for his accomplishments in record-breaking and not in law-breaking.
Jayson Stark's toupee is arguably far more sad that Pete Rose's real hair, even when Rose had a thick full Moe.
Not to mention, another Cleveland one… Ray Chapman.
Ray Chapman had a full Moe, too?
Agree with Pat.
Starks is also part of the baseball crew that don't want to call Sosa et al "cheaters" and pretend the steroid era deserves an asterisk at worst.
Who cares about Jayson Stark and his rug. Karl Ravech's, too. All I know is my 9-year-old nieces beat LeBron in the bike-a-thon, then he refused to shake their hands and he stomped off the bike path.
the stories that Alan has…………….what a guy!
Uh, I'll save my tears for something other than Pete Rose, even if the "worldwide leader in sports" tells me I shouldn't.
For me, the whole Hall of Fame has lost any value to me because its becoming a popularity contest, even with the esteemed voters. Its just like the All-Star game: ballots are printed in January, assuming certain players will have good seasons. There's too much homework involved for the voting panel to be fully informed enough to make a good decision.
