On Shaq being Shaq

by Pat McManamon on July 31, 2009

in McManamon, Shaq

AOL's David Whitley has an interesting take on Shaquille O'Neal: "Cavs fans are going to discover what people in Orlando, LA , Miami and Phoenix already knew. Shaq is far more interested in being Shaq than being a basketball player.Being Shaq means pursuing every whim, indulging every desire and getting motivated when he darned well pleases. "

I never trust anybody with a name like "Whitley." It's one of those highfalutin fey Ivy League names with no substance underneath. I'll bet he walks around town wearing a pocket protector and a bow tie when he's not watching reruns of "Star Trek."

Shaq might only lookout for himself but he is also on a mission from god to win another title and spite Kobe Bryant. I'll take revenge over "love of game" and "money" as a motivator any day.

Shaq in case you're reading – Kobe just told me he hopes your show is better acted than Kaazam. He also doubts you'll put up double figures in rebounds. Kobe also called you a loser. Are you going to stand for that smack Shaq?

shaq isn't on a mission to do anything other than promote shaq.

the guy has 4 rings and is already transitioning to a second career. people will be in for a rude awakening when the big guy mentally checks out. which is going to happen this year—guaranteed.

should have got him at the trade deadline when he still semi-gave a crap.

Amen to that, terje. But Gilbert doesn't do anything without a strict money motive, and he saved cash last season by not doing the deal last season, and with the acquisition now later than sooner, he's carnival barked his way to substantially increased season ticket renewals by hawking the combo of O'Neal with James. He's a shrewd dude, I'll give the shrimp that much.

I'm sick of Shaq's act already, and he hasn't even played one game for us.

I just don't go for the "look at me" type celebrity, those who are always clamoring for attention so openly.

Shaq's been like that from day one, cutting rap albums, making movies, etc. It hasn't stopped him from winning MVP awards and title rings.

I could envision this goof commuting and chartering a single engine plane to his home in Orlando just to get a good night's sleep far away from gorgeous Cleveland. Like Terry Pluto commuting from his Akron home in his 1995 Taurus whenever he has to motor into town to attend a game.
