Well the Boston Celtics just got better. Rasheed Wallace for two years at the mid-level exception. I kind of wish the Cavs had done that, though clearly there is risk involved. Cavs GM Danny Ferry is very good at laying low until he finds the right guy, and there are guys available (Shawn Marion, Josh Childress, Antonio McDyess). We'll see. … By the way … why is it that not a single national story I read about top free agents even lists the words Anderson and Varejao?

Another NBA free agent goes to a Cavs competitor

Because the rest of the NBA knows that Varejao is a novelty act – a high energy guy with VERY limited offensive skills. The playoffs showed that very clearly, and the other teams were watching.
"Cavs GM Danny Ferry is very good at laying low until he finds the right guy …" We already have a strong nominee for the line of the week, and the week has just started. Perhaps Ferry will spring into action like a jungle cat and snatch DaJuan Wagner from the death grips of the Polish League.
Oh, as far as Varejao is concerned, Gilbert is not going to pay the luxury tax for him and an outside free agent, no matter how strong the lies that he's a spendaholic.
Varejao is OK on the Cavaliers, I don't know how anybody can deny that. But there is so much acrimony between Varejao's agent and the Cavaliers' resident dolt, I don't see how they come to terms without a sign and trade. Who knows, maybe they can work it out, but the Cavaliers would be far better off with both Varejao *and* one of the better remaining free agents still out there.
Oh, and when did somebody like a J.J. Hickson become a virtual "untouchable," like he's one of those untouchable G-Men chasing Al Capone? Only with the Cleveland Cavaliers could something so stupid like this happen. Well, maybe with the Memphis Grizzlies, too.
I guess Ferry's been lying low waiting for the perfect free agent ever since he signed Marshall, Hughes and Damon Jones. alan's right–that's a classic, Pat.
I'd be happy if he just re-signed Varejao and then nabbed just about any wing player except this Parker fellow he seems to be targeting.
larry, it's been bothering me, but then again I'm easily bothered … why does everybody, including yourself, always leave Big Z out of the sentence when discussing that initial batch of long-term grossly overpaid studs? The only thing that separated his contract from Hughes' contract was the color of the barf.
At what point will pro sports franchises implode because of the insane salary structures? It's a shame. But you see current players holding teams hostage to "get theirs" before the house of cards crumbles. Just like it did on Wall St., watch it….we're not far off. And player/agent greed will be the cause of it all.
It's not really player/agent greed, Jason. When you've got idiots like Ferry running around back up Brink's trucks into guys' driveways, they are the ones who set the tone and the market. Europe still isn't a viable option, and probably never will be.
For example, if Ferry had said, "Listen dude, your client Ilgauskas is only worth, at the very MOST, three years at $7 million a year," what would Ilgauskas' options have been? He could have either signed, or he could have stayed home and groomed the dog, that's what.
There is going to be a lockout in 2011, and that's when it all comes home to roost. At least they're not giving rookies like Glenn Robinson (and the great Danny Ferry) 10-year contracts anymore.
Oh, and this isn't important, just kind of funny. I'm sitting here right now, and I'm listening to Windhorst on sports talk radio. His dog is yapping in the background. What a professional show. Perhaps the dog is telling his master to spread a new rumor.
I really don't know what fans expect of Ferry. With ALL the myriad moves that are taking place one thing will remain the same……ONE team will win the championship and the other 29 won't! No matter what the Cavs do there's no guarantee that they will win a championship! You can't force these stars to come to Cleveland and the thing is, LeBron continues to get ripped when, year in and out, he does more with less than ANYONE!
I'm proud of the Cavs, I hope they do better, I'm DONE with the army of critics and I'll continue to be a Cavs fan….even when LBJ is gone.
You're contradicting yourself, oldstix. The very reason James has had to do more with less than anyone year in and year out was BECAUSE of Danny Ferry.
What do I expect from Ferry? Well, quitting would be a nice start. And then I want him to wash my car. And then I want to rub his bald head against his father's bald head, I'm going camping and I need to build a fire.
