Another in-depth look at the Indians, with the same conclusions

by Pat McManamon on June 30, 2009

in Indians, Mark Shapiro, McManamon

A pretty in-depth study of the Indians blames the team's woes this season on poor pitching and high draft picks that missed. Then it states: "The (Mark) Shapiro-(Chris) Antonetti tandem gets more love from national media outlets than, say, White Sox GM Kenny Williams, who is perceived as arrogant and overly blunt. Is it because the Cleveland guys are media favorites? Perhaps. But their front office peers also regard Shapiro and Antonetti as extremely bright, people-oriented, innovative thinkers."

Hmm. Seems like the White Sox have won a World Series recently, and typically finish higher than the Tribe. "Innovative thinkers?" In what respect? Results on the field don't reflect it, and we're now talking every single year since Hart left, with the exception of the 2005 choke (where the GM added nothing for the stretch drive), and the 2007 abberation (where the GM added nothing in the post-season).

And yes, pitching and draft picks are abysmal. But will someone (i.e. PAT OR SHELDON) please break down the offense over the last two seasons, in particular, to prove once and for all: this myth about Cleveland's "high power" offense is the biggest farce in town. And as long as the front-office *believes* in the fallacy, they won't improve the offense.

PLEASE, PAT, I beg of you….open their eyes to the consistently awful run production (zero, 1, 2 or 3 runs per game) and the anemic hitting (7 hits or fewer per game). It'll be a huge eye-opener.

What is the over/under on Wedge? Absent an amazing long winning streak right away, no way he lasts the season. If bets were being offered right now with July 30 being the over/under, there is no question I would take the under.

terje June 30, 2009 at 5:37 pm

wedge? i say he stays until the end of the year. the guy should have been fired a few times over already. until mark shapiro is forced out there is no reason to believe his paramour is going anywhere.

I am ready to bring my troops in and baffle opposing pitchers. One call is all it takes. We can help, but what is Wedge supposed to do. He is not the one going out there and pitching underhand softballs to the opposing hitters.

I'm definintely taking the over, Alan. I'd be shocked if they canned Wedge before the end of the season – like Terje said, Wedge almost certainly stays as long as Shapiro does. Set that over/under at October 5 and you'll get way more action!!!!

I'm stubborn, I'm still taking the under.

Brian July 2, 2009 at 8:47 am

I go "under." The owners can't let this debacle continue as is. There'll be nobody in the stands, at this rate.

Would Dan O'Dowd consider coming back and taking over the operation here?
