Bernie Kosar's continuing struggle with life after football, divorce and, now, bankruptcy

by Pat McManamon on June 22, 2009

in Bernie Kosar, McManamon

The Miami Herald got some unusual access to former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar on the day he filed for bankruptcy. Here is the story. One highlight from Kosar: "I was 25 and everyone was telling me that I was the smartest; now I'm 45 and realize I'm an idiot. I'm 45 and immature. I don't like being 45." And another tidbit: "He speaks with a slur and admits there has been drinking and pain medication in his past, but says the only thing he's addicted to is football. Drugs? Alcohol? 'Would my kids be living with me if that were really the case?' he asks. 'If I did 10 percent of things I'm accused of, I'd be dead.' He says the divorce has cost him between $4 and $5 million already. 'That's just fees,' he says. 'And they keep coming. Attorneys charge $600 an hour just to screw things up more.' And here's the worst part: 'I don't want to get divorced,' he says. 'I'm Catholic, and I'm loyal, and I still love her."'

what is the deal with this part of the article?:

***His daughter rolled her car the other day, getting ejected as it sank into a lake.

"Memorial Day, I should have been doing the funeral for her," he says.***

no more mention of this. dropped from the story.

is lebatard normally this bad of a writer? is bernie's daughter dead? there is no follow up to this part. i'm going to assume that his daughter is not dead and that dan lebatard is as much of an idiot as he portrays himself to be on t.v.

Well, I coulda told ya that buying an indoor football team wasn't the most savvy investment in town, BK. Clevelanders can't even support their baseball team, hockey and soccer teams have been in and out…not to mention, isn't Cleveland rated as the poorest city in the nation? Our so-called "love" for football doesn't exactly extend to the Arena.

Seriously, Kosar almost makes me want to vomit. His agent has him doing a mini-Kobe rape allegation whirlwind media tour. On the radio, in the newspaper, on TV. Only this media tour involves an egomaniacal loser who can't face the reality that he is no longer relevant. Sorry for being so blunt, but this guy needs a shrink, and hopefully a shrink who will tell it to him in Howard Cosell language by telling it like it is.

This is what I'd really like to say to him: "GO AWAY AND STAY AWAY, BERNIE!"

Oh, and terje, Le Batard is far from the character he plays on TV. I'm a big fan of his sportswriting. He's pretty good on the radio, too. You can listen to him on live broadcasts on the Web. Remember when Tim Hardaway got in major trouble for giving his opinion about gays? That was Le Batard's interview.

Also, you should find and listen to his heated interview with Jay Bilas. Good stuff. Bilas is a politically correct Dukie dunce. I can't wait until the NBA draft, when Bilas repeatedly talks about a guy who has a giant "wingspan" and is "long." If John Holmes could fly, Jay Bilas is there to describe it.

But bottom line, Le Batard is a very good sportswriter. I've been reading him for years, trust me on this. Who knows why there is no follow-up, my best guess is, as Pat will tell you, that newspaper editors show no mercy when it comes to hacking a guy's stuff like a bad slasher movie.

i'll take your word for it alan.

i wonder if bernie's daughter knows that the miami herald wants her dead?

I think until Bernie's daughter finally gets Bernie on video, she's going to have to stay alive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH3JAp7vMuo&NR=1

Really, what is the difference between Kosar's sad and pathetic public image tour and the white trash on Jerry Springer telling the world just how sad and pathetic they are? Other than Bernie isn't appearing in a venue where he's getting cracked over the head with a chair. But who knows, the week is still young.

I really see no tragedy here. Kosar left NE Ohio to live large in fantasy land and the fantasy ended with a thud.

Boy, I can't believe BK would allow himself to be portrayed as this hopelessly pathetic. A saw? To cut bread? Really? That isnt a sign of inexperience; it is a sign of stupidity.

well, now every knows why belichick claimed bernie had "diminished skills". i've worked with developmentally disabled people with more common sense.

Can you blame Bernie for having trouble making a sandwich? Hey, you try buying three-day old Wonder Bread from some guy selling it from the trunk of his car in the parking lot at Land Shark Stadium. Not only did Bernie need a saw, he needed an *electric* saw.

Seriously Bernie,
Go home and get yourself straight dude. Calm down and stop living others lives.
You need rest and wisdom. Rest is easy. Wisdom? Well, take time and listen instead of talking.
You are trying to be something you never were. Whatever it is you MUST stop this train and get off.
Go find things that calm you down and do them like a religion. Keep doing those things until you can really look at life clearly then you can begin to live again.

Bernie Kosar is a fine human being. Let the press have their fun, but give Bernie another chance.
