Indians win Thursday wasn't well-played, but it was a win

I wasn't overly impressed with the Indians game Thursday, except that they won. Kansas City did the Indians a great favor by leaving in Gil Meche for one inning too many, then by bringing in a lefty Grady Sizemore could hit. Sizemore took him deep for the game-winning home run. Their chances until that point (as you can see here, with thanks to www.fangraphs.com) were not good.

Another whose insights I respect greatly agreed with me: "On a pleasant spring afternoon, there's nothing quite like a well-played baseball game to pass the time away. And, folks, that was nothing like a well-played game."

All that being said, the Indians won, they needed to win, and the alternative would have been really bad. At this point, any win the Indians get is a good one — and there is a lot to be said for the way Anthony Reyes, Jensen Lewis and Kerry Wood pitched. In truth, that game showed what the Indians were supposed to be this season.

I created a fan graph which proves that if attendance continues to be less than 13,000 for well-played games on pleasant spring afternoons, then Sizemore will eventually be hitting elsewhere.
