Some fine work by the Hawks radio voice

April 30, 2009

Classic announcing here. What will this guy say bout LeBron James if the Hawks play the Cavs?

An Indians thought

April 30, 2009

Isn't Grady Sizemore too good a hitter to be hitting .239? That's what we're told at least. Or have been told. This was a guy projected to be an AL MVP. He also has 23 strikeouts, second-highest on the team to Jhonny Peralta. When was the day we thought we'd see Sizemore's strikeouts up with [...]

A few notes on Indians attendance

April 30, 2009

One year ago, Major League Baseball sent the Red Sox to Cleveland for a Monday and Tuesday night series in April. Attendance was 21,802 and 25,135, an average of 23,458 and ½ of a human being (he or she did not get in for half price, though). This year, MLB sent the Red Sox to [...]

An interesting take on the Celtics

April 30, 2009

I take no credit for the presentation. The link is here, on www.waitingfornextyear.com.
But I do enjoy it. Thoughts?
"According to the Celtics …

"This is disrespectful.

"(This) is being a good teammate.

"This is not a cheap shot.

"This is a good play.
"Everyone got that? There will be a test."

Rondo skates

April 30, 2009

Dwight Howard was suspended for his elbow, but the NBA didn't agree with me on the Rajon Rondo foul. They determined he was making "a basketball play and going for the ball after a blown defensive assignment by the Celtic team," the league's Stu Jackson said.
No tears in Chicago, where they're saying "Blame Michael Jordan." [...]

More on Rondo, Howard and possible (deserved) suspensions

April 29, 2009

Here's one more take on Rajon Rondo's foul on Brad Miller. The more I think the more I think both plays did not warrant a suspension, they demand one. Both players should sit for Game 6.

Rondo, Howard earned suspensions

April 29, 2009

It'll be interesting to see what, if anything, happens with Rajon Rondo of Boston and Dwight Howard of Orlando following the fouls (shown in the above video) in Game 5 of their playoff series.
Both, quite frankly, could be suspended – justifiably. Both are great players and key parts of their teams (Howard is a little [...]

How does Rasheed Wallace on the Cavs sound?

April 29, 2009

Let's get way ahead of ourselves. Rasheed Wallace will be a free agent after this season, and I think it's an awful intriguing idea to put him on the Cavs for a year – if he's willing to play for a reduced rate.
That kind of contract might be the best Wallace can expect this offseason. [...]

The refs swallowed the whistle; Rajon Rondo deserved a flagrant

April 28, 2009

First let's admit the obvious: Rajon Rondo has been exceptional for the Boston Celtics in their series against the Chicago Bulls.
But that's irrelevant to what happened at the end of Tuesday's game, which was won by Boston.
Rondo deserved a flagrant foul for his shot to the jaw of Brad Miller with 2 seconds left in [...]

Indians win came in a really ugly game

April 28, 2009

Anyone who stayed up to watch that one deserves a Grandstand Manager's ticket.
Tuesday night's game between the Indians and Red Sox was not exactly the finest example of Major League Baseball ever played at Progressive Field.
The first three innings took one hour and 55 minutes. The teams used eight dozen baseballs in those three innings. One [...]

The first conspiracy theory of the playoffs

April 28, 2009

The Boston Globe reported this about Boston's game in Chicago on Sunday: "An NBA source pointed out before the game that two of the referees were Chicago natives (Marc Davis and Dan Crawford). Kennedy also was involved in an incident with (Celtics coach Doc) Rivers during the Bulls' St. Patrick's Day win in which both [...]

Indians misery meter starting to boil

April 28, 2009

The Indians start is reaching the miserable level. Jason Bay's three-run home run off Kerry Wood in the ninth inning might have driven it there. As Geoff Beckman writes, "It's like you're on a 'Chamber of Horror' ride– a new disaster every day. You just want to scream 'What's next?  How are you guys planning [...]

A last and loving look back at the Browns draft

April 28, 2009

It's time to wrap up the Browns draft, and when we do we should always keep in mind what Steve Young said on ESPN: The 'X' factor for a lot of guys is they love football.
Got it.
I do love the draft analysts, and it appears ESPN is grooming Todd McShay to ease out Mel Kiper. [...]

The Cavs didn't just sweep, they dominated

April 27, 2009

How good were the Cavs and LeBron James in sweeping the Pistons?
ESPN provides these stats:
***The Cavaliers became just the third team to sweep a team by winning each game by a double-digit margin (1980 Celtics and 2004 Pacers).
***Mike Brown's teams are 5-2 in road-clinching playoff games. They had one playoff road win prior to Brown's [...]

The Cavs sweep before a "home" crowd in Detroit

April 26, 2009

This was pretty much a complete dismantling. The Cavs took apart the Detroit Pistons, and it really was no surprise. The Pistons ended the season by losing three games in a row and dropping from the seventh seed to the eight. Their reward: LeBron James.
James was the unstoppable force, averaging 32 points, 11.3 rebounds and [...]

Wrapping up the draft before heading to the Palace

April 25, 2009

Some final general thoughts on the draft before heading back to The Palace to see the Cavs finish off the Pistons:
—This is what I wrote for Sunday's Beacon Journal.
—Most draftniks think the moment of the draft came when the Browns made the deal with the Jets to trade down. Not for the Brown sake, mind [...]

Further reflection on the center, and adding a receiver in round two

April 25, 2009

Now that I've gotten over the surprise of seeing a center taken first, it's all coming together. Sort of. The Browns traded down, got extra picks, added a center in round one and a needed receiver in round two in Brian Robiskie. Add free agency and the Browns have brought in three new offensive linemen, [...]

Browns acquire safety with 2002 sexual battery conviction

April 25, 2009

The Browns just acquired Abram Elam from the Jets in their draft-day trade. Elam is a safety from Riviera Beach, Fla., who started his college career at Notre Dame and finished at Kent State. The reason he left Notre Dame: He was expelled after being accused (and eventually convicted) of sexual battery. Four men were [...]

Browns trade down, which was good to see

April 25, 2009

Thumbs up so far. Now if the Browns can land LB Rey Maualuga at 17, it will be a very good day. I'm getting a little tired of the Jets influence — we get three more of those guys? — but trading down for two picks is not a bad thing. Who knows, maybe they'll [...]

Peter King on the Stafford contract

April 25, 2009

Peter King of SI.com weighed in on the contract given to Matt Stafford. The Lions gave the first overall pick $41 million in guaranteed money before he ever played a down.
"Why?" King wrote. "The Lions rewarded the Georgia quarterback with a six-year, $72 million contract that could escalate to $78 million by maximizing incentives; $41.7 [...]

Draft news flash

April 25, 2009

Mel Kiper has the Browns drafting Mark Sanchez and trading Brady Quinn. I used to believe Kiper got inside information because he was on the team that broadcast the draft — he was the only guy to predict Gerard Warren while the Browns were on the click (as well as when they were on the [...]

The draft, contracts, unshaven kids, and the relation of all to fans

April 25, 2009

Here is what is wrong with the draft: Reports Friday night said Matthew Stafford was given $41.7 million in guaranteed money by the Detroit Lions to agree to play there. Apparently it takes a lot of money to go to Detroit these days.
Stafford has yet to play a down in the NFL, yet the Lions [...]

For your Saturday entertainment …

April 25, 2009

Presented in honor of being in Detroit. The first two clips are from the old Hollywood Palace TV show, which was on every Saturday night at 9:30. My parents watched it religiously, which meant I did too. One of those shows that you remember in black and white as well as color. The music alone [...]

The Cavs win Game 3 — no reason to believe it won't be a sweep

April 24, 2009

I think I'll let Mo Williams sum up the Cavs win in Game 3: "I was 1-for-11 and Delonte (West) was 0-for-7 and we had eight turnovers between us And we win the game by 11 on the road. What more do you want me to say?"
Not much to add to that. If either or [...]
