The Cleveland Browns will conduct a quarterback competition in training camp, and Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn will both be given the chance to earn the job, coach Eric Mangini said Tuesday.
Speaking at Tuesday's AFC Coaches Breakfast at the NFL's annual meetings, Mangini said Quinn and Anderson will share reps and time in camp and preseason, with a starter named when Mangini feels the time is right.
"I don't have a projected starter," Mangini said. "We're going to have an open competition."
Mangini said he was excited about both players and liked both players, and he said he needs to see both in practice and games to see how they respond to situation before deciding on a starter.
He said he spoke individually to both players in the past two weeks, and explained the plans to both. He said both understood.
The determining factor in who will start?
"Who can help us win," he said.
Mangini did not specifically address trading either player, but said he would always be open to improving the team — no matter the position.
That being said, he sounded much like GM George Kokinis did: Barring an offer they can't refuse, the Browns seem to be planning to bring back both quarterbacks and let them fight to win the job.
More to come from Mangini's interview here as the day goes on.
Not. The. Least. Bit. Surprised.
Neither one has done anything to outdistance themselves against the other while they were healthy and judging by the history of this team to go through QBs like paper towels at times, they might want two guys on the roster who can start and not just take up space behind the O-Line.
We know what DA can do, and that's why we need to find a quarterback. How can BQ "outdistance" himself in 1 1/2 games? We need to give this kid a real chance to show whether he's our future.
In reading various articles out of the cleveland area{ which I am origanally from}, there seems to be a lot of negativety about Beanie Wells. I'm not sure why so many people seem to think this would be a bad choice for the browns. I watch Ohiostate play most of their games and the Buckeyes are clearly a dominate team with Beanie and only slightly above average without him. Mike Mayock seems to think he isn't tough enough. To me he is by far the most dominate runner for the buckeyes in years and is skipping his senior seaon as the # 4 rusher in OSU HISTORY! Oh I forgot he hurt his foot and missed three games, Big Deal! Let's draft a potential probowl back that's local and create some fan interest and a great running game. Mike Junkin & cliff Charelton are gone but they were supposed to be the answers at LB if you haven't heard of them it's because they were Ist. round busts, or even Tim couch, Courtney Brown, Or even another Gerard Warren. The nfl draft experts always direct teams toward someOL or Lb that isn't really that good. In my opinion, this draft is loaded with mediocre Olinemen ,Linebackers& and defensive players that you can get in the later rounds. There are no Joe Thomases in this draft. Right tackle is a position you can get later. I believe the wideouts are very deep in this draft and there are some other positions of depth. But Beanie Wells has the potential to be a stud for a# of years, the knock on OSU all last year was the Oline wasn't blocking. But when Beanie carried the ball they looked great. In my opinion this guy will be special, and could be a building block for the reemergence of a once proud franchise. For some reason The good people of Northeast Ohio seem to think Having a star running back From OSU would'nt be good. I disagree.
Well Brady Quinn will have a chance to prove himself in training camp, but Derek Anderson needs to go, he's goofy and can't scramble.
I wish Mangini would just say Quinn is the guy from the start. Make it his job to lose. To make it a competition just creates a situation where more team division can occur when what this team needs is to come together. I hope it really is a fair competition. I just get the sense (whether it is the Charlie Wiess connection or something else) that Mangini is not going to give Quinn a real look. The same mistake Crennel made. But I hope I'm wrong and I hope B. Quinn is the starter this season.
About the Q.B.situation, This is merely conjecture on my part: I seem to recall the former coach saying that Brady Quinn would be the starter this year. He went on to say that he played well before the injury and that he'd conducted himself beautifully as a backup without creating a problem for the team. Now some might say that this was the opinion of a lame duck coach. True, except that coach is very close friends with this coach and has been offered some sort of position as a consultant. Whether Crennel excepts or not isn't the point, I think that the Q.B. situation led to the falling out of coach and G.M and the lost season. By not trading D.A. when his value was at it's highest for draft picks, a rift was created. D.A. will be traded as soon as a good offer comes.
Here we go again. We draft a guy in the first round–a college star, mind you–and make him sit two seasons behind a guy off the scrap heap who, except for some fluke games vs. bad teams, has performed so poorly that he wouldn't even make the roster of many NFL teams…and most certainly would not be their starter. Mangini just proved he's still got a LOT to learn.
First of all, I wouldn't believe anything that Mangini says at this point. Maybe he's being completely honest. Maybe he's trying to create interest in Quinn or Anderson for a possible trade. It doesn't matter right now. It's March 24th. I don't have a problem with both of them battling it out in camp. If Quinn truly is better than DA, he'll prove it. The better QB will start in 2009.
Now as far as Beanie Wells, Joseph, there's no doubt he's a very good player. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a Browns uniform, but not with the 5th pick in the draft. This team has so many needs, mainly linebacker, safety and receiver. Now if Wells somehow slipped to the 2nd round (not likely) I would bet the Browns would grab him.
Hey guys… First off, Brady Quinn – you have to give the guy a solid chance and I think it would be fair to give him the bulk of the snaps in pre-season practices the same as Anderson got in 2008… Quinn has to be given the confidence that it is his team, and when that happens he will have a couple of mediocre games to get in the groove, but then he will be the QB that everyone saw at Notre Dame!
As for Beanie, agree with Scott, not with the 5th pick, and RB is stacked this year in the draft as well, so they should be able to draft someone good in round 2 or even 3…
Not sold on Mangini being a leader… but we can only hope that he learned a lot in NY and that he can get these guys motivated! Please draft some LB's and WR's because the David Patten signing is not going to help either one of those QB's !!
Go Irish!
Quinn messed up when he held out for more money after he was drafted. If he had signed he would be in his 3rd year as the starting qb. Anderson has the better arm, and I dont care who throws the ball if the guys on the other end cant catch it. We are starting over again, SAD.
There will not be a competition. One of them will be gone — maybe both. But Mangini is smart not to devalue either of them at this point by declaring one better than the other. Doubt if it will fool anyone, but hey . . . the need only one dumb GM to hand over a first or second rounder for DA. And if it ends up being DA they keep, look for them to sign a guy like Leftwich to compete against him for the starting position, followed closely by the drafting of the Browns' next "Quarterback of the Future."
You Brady Quinn fans always make me laugh! Please name one big game this guy has won since leaving Columbus, Ohio – I'll wait… Please explain why 21 other teams passed on this guy – I'll wait… Please explain why no other team has made a blockbuster offer to obtain him from us seeing that we are not using him much? One statement that gets to the heart of the matter – "He's Not Very Good!".
