The Cavs beat the Pistons in an ugly … err … pretty game

March 31, 2009

I didn't think much of the way the Cavs played Tuesday night. They struggled in an ugly game, but made enough plays to beat Detroit.
Mike Brown, though, loved the game.
"It was a good, ugly, physical grind-it-out type of game," Brown said.
Which clearly is not the kind of game that Dayana Mendoza would play at Guantanomo. [...]

Hey! Miss Universe has a blog

March 31, 2009

OK … I'm sure most of you think this is just a cheap excuse to get Dayana Mendoza's photo on the blog. Well … you're probably right!
Except that her most recent blog was an item about a visit to Guantanomo. That's right, she got free tickets to visit Gitmo, the military prison where the U.S. is [...]

Idle thought

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not signed an unrestricted free agent from another team. The Browns have signed 10, four who were with the Jets last season.

Hey Wade: Pass the ball

March 31, 2009

Interesting story by Tim Legler on Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat. Legler opines that Wade is shooting too much and needs to shoot less while Orlando's Dwight Howard needs to shoot more. Why should Wade tone it down? "You won't get by a Boston, Cleveland or Orlando in the playoffs with that one-man approach."

Seve Ballesteros fights for his life

March 31, 2009

I had the pleasure of covering the Ryder Cup when it was played at Valderrama in Spain (Hey! Somebody had to go … ), and the lingering memory of that U.S. defeat was the spirit of Seve Ballesteros. The European captain single-handedly willed his team over the U.S. He was everywhere, roaming the course in [...]

Hrrmph

March 31, 2009

Figures.
I spend Monday writing about the Indians and spending a good chunk of time pointing out that Travis Hafner had not hit a home run in the spring. What does he do? Hit a home run Monday night, after I'd sent the story. This is the Murphy's Law of sports writing – and it goes [...]

OK … ahem … well … I'm now on Twitter

March 31, 2009

Well, I'm not really a "Twitter" guy … but the powers-that-be at the Beacon Journal thought it was a good idea to be on there. So they signed me up, and now all columns and glog posts and other mindless (or mindfull) musings will be there.
Those who are "Twitter inclined" or "Twitter friendly" can follow [...]

What's your lineup for Indians opening day?

March 31, 2009

What's your starting lineup for the Indians for Opening Day? Let's pretend Eric Wedge called and asked for advice, all in the spirit of fun. Here's what mine would be:
Sizemore – CF
You expected Jamey Carroll?
Cabrera – 2B
For some reason I like this kind of hitter better in the second slot than a guy like Mark [...]

Remembering an original Brown

March 30, 2009

It seems wise to remember an original Brown who died on Sunday. Lou Saban was the Browns captain for three of the four years he played for the team when the Browns were in the old All-America Football Conference. Saban started at linebacker all four years with the team and is a member of the [...]

The NFL ponders changes to its "20-game season"

March 26, 2009

The NFL finds itself in a bit of a pickle thanks to its own financial doings. Well, it's not a pickle per se. That would make the league all squishy and green. But it is in an interesting position as it ponders the debate to expand the regular season.
The league now positions itself that it [...]

The NFL rich get richer, thanks to DirecTV

March 26, 2009

The NFL's new deal with DirecTV really defies belief.
The league announced a deal that would pay the NFL $1 billion per year from 2011 through 2014. That's a 43 percent increase per year. In a down economic time.
Compare that figure to what the league receives from broadcast networks in present contracts that expire in 2011: [...]

The NFL adds a(nother) rule to protect QBs

March 25, 2009

I don't understand the NFL's new rule on tackling quarterbacks below the knee. The rule change states that if a defensive player is knocked down he has to get back up and hit the quarterback above the knee if he wants to tackle him. Call it the "Tom Brady Rule," because it was Brady's injury [...]

The NFL and the policy of plentiful digs

March 25, 2009

In October, a subsidiary of AIG spent more than $440,000 for an executive retreat at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. This retreat came within days of $85 billion in taxpayer money being given to AIG.
Guess where the NFL held its annual meetings? Yes, the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort. Yes, this league that has [...]

A scene from the NFL Meetings

March 25, 2009

Seen in the media room at the NFL Meetings:
A female reporter stood in the media room by her seat. She was talking on the phone, when she suddenly screamed an expletive, looked down and said: "Holy (expletive)! Somebody stole my (expletive) cell phone!"
She started rifling through her bag, and found nothing. She picked up the [...]

Mangini's quarterbacks in New York

March 25, 2009

Browns coach Eric Mangini announced Tuesday that he would have an open competition between quarterbacks Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson during training camp and preseason. Mangini said over and over he'd done it in New York, so he could handle another competition in Cleveland. It was all about finding the best guy, he said.
How did [...]

George Kokinis on Brady Quinn at the NFL Meetings

March 23, 2009

When trying to decipher trade talk, one man's "shop" can of course be another man's earnest discussion.
So when George Kokinis said at the NFL's Annual Meetings that he has not "shopped" QB Brady Quinn or WR Braylon Edwards in trade talks, there is a lot of room for interpretation. Of course, the first interpretation might [...]

Kokinis: I have not shopped Quinn or Edwards

March 23, 2009

The Browns have not "shopped" quarterback Brady Quinn or wide receiver Braylon Edwards on the trade market, GM George Kokinis said Monday at the NFL's annual meetings
Kokinis sat down during a lunch break and addressed many issues related to the Browns — including trade rumors surrounding Quinn and Edwards.
Asked specifically if he had shopped Quinn [...]

The Cavs and their pregame photo shoot

March 20, 2009

Every NBA team these days has an exaggerated pregame ritual. The Cavs are no different. Lately they've taken to these kinds of "photo shoots." It's all fun, but sometimes I wonder if the other team isn't going just get flat perturbed at these things. Then again, when you've got the best record in the league, [...]

March 20, 2009
