The hiring of Kokinis moves forward

What seems like a drawn-out interview for the Browns General Manager job isn't that drawn out at all. George Kokinis has spent a lot of time in Berea this week, and probably will be hired. My guess is we get an announcement today or tomorrow (Wednesday or Thursday) with a news conference to follow. But the process hasn't been illogical.

Owner Randy Lerner first wanted Kokinis to spend time with coach Eric Mangini so the two could see how they could and would work together. Then he wanted Kokinis to meet with some of Mangini's staff. The last step will be for Kokinis and Mangini to meet with Lerner to detail to Lerner how they will work together.

It makes sense.

But it also seems that Kokinis would have had to bring his dog in to tear up the carpet or something to lose his chance at the job. The Browns have been leaning toward hiring him for some time, provided he did not bungle the interview. He has been Mangini's main guy, and folks in Baltimore have pretty much written him off. His hiring seems a matter of time, and the Browns will be run by the Kokinis-Mangini team.

Ya think ? Good Lord, it's been going on for quite a while …it's like a never ending hiring process. Just get it done with and lets get our offseason strategy in motion.

You must be missing something here,Dan.

Would you have preferred that Lerner offer him the job "site unseen", so to speak?

Furthermore, Lerner couldn't offer him the job while the Ravens were still in the playoffs.

Some of you fans are just plain ridiculous with your impatience and ability to understand what the process actually is.

I thought that this article made it pretty understandable as to what the process has been.

yeah, it's pretty ridiculous to be impatient when the team sells out every game, sells a ton of merch and has sucked ass on the field since it's reincarnation. can't you fans give this franchise at least another 10 years????

  4. drew says:

Terje, just since the reincarnation? i know that you meant since 1970, you just forgot to put it in there.

You know, I read Pluto's book on the 1964 team, and how the players and Modell had tired of Paul Brown and his inflexibility…but it is curious how this team hasn't been the same since he left, and how the Bengals went to 2 SB's while he was alive.

    (I will start ducking).

1970? Hey, that 1972 team would have beaten the undefeated Dolphins if Phipps didn't play that game like he was Brett Favre on acid. They had a few other good teams through 1995, too. Not many, but a few.

What gets me is Lerner is only hiring old cronies and their acquaintances. Everything still seems connected to that Modell tree, which ain't exactly an oak or a Sequoia. You'd think this guy would have the fortitude, the presence and the vision to be able to reach beyond his underhanded traitor father's connections.

Fortunately for Kokinis, as evidenced by this revealing paparazzi photo, his dog cleans up his own messes, Pat. Although, I think Lerner wouldn't give a sh*t what Kokinis' dog did to the carpet. No pun intended. Or maybe it is.

Really classy, this guy has himself a free stadium, luxury loge income, seat licenses, season ticket pre-sales no matter how badly they suck, additional ticket sales filling the stadium, percentages of concession sales, television income, and on and on and on, and probably had to pay an extra premium to Kokinis just to persuade him to work under him. A flow of money generated by his American professional football franchise out the wazoo. Despite these facts, I see he had the unmitigated gall to authorize laying off 15 people. What a jerk.

Hey, Pat, what's the deal? I posted my disdain for the manner in which the hires were handled and my disdain for these layoffs. Then, 2 1/2 hours later, an advance post of tomorrow's column appears on the main site. Is this simply a case of great minds thinking alike, or should I be charging you a 10% commission for giving you ideas for your columns? This ain't the first time it's happened. Coincidence or theft of intellectual property?
