First and 10: Those friendly and helpful Bengals!

September 29, 2008

First and 10
1)      Perspective is an amazing thing. Driving North on I-71 Sunday night, the Cincinnati talk shows were abuzz about the Bengals falling to 0-4. The feeling: How in the world could they lose to the Browns? One announcer said, "I know we had the backup quarterback playing, but we should have beat that [...]

Browns win, but boy was that ugly …

September 28, 2008

At one point during the Browns oh-so-exciting win over the Bengals, an e-mailer sent a colleague a note in the press box that watching that game was like "watching a cactus grow."
Boy was it.
The Browns did not play well in their win, but they won, and that's what they needed. Boy did they. Because a [...]

No Carson Palmer …

September 28, 2008

Carson Palmer will not play today for the Cincinnati Bengals. If the Browns cannot beat the Bengals with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback, it's time to consider disbanding the franchise.

A Browns thought prior to suspension of activities …

September 26, 2008

I am hereby suspending all blog activity until the crisis in Berea is solved.
HEY … it's a joke!
The more one thinks (note the imperial ‘one') the more it seems nearly irrelevant who plays quarterback on Sunday in Cincinnati. That's because the Bengals' run defense is dismal and this is the weekend to get the running [...]

Derek Anderson will start

September 24, 2008

Item: Romeo Crennel announced that Derek Anderson will start Sunday in Cincinnati.
I tried to make this clear yesterday (cough, cough). Anderson has always been the choice of the coach and his staff.
If nothing else, Crennel is loyal. In this case, I think he made the right decision. Anderson has been working with the starters since [...]

First and 10: Expect Anderson to start

September 23, 2008

First and 10
1)      I'm of the understanding that Derek Anderson starts Sunday's game in Cincinnati. Not a lot of thought at all to starting Brady Quinn. I don't know what the leanings are if Anderson falters, so we'll see what happens. But the Browns aren't really going into this game with the idea that Anderson [...]

The Browns fall to oh-and-three …

September 21, 2008

How do the Browns go from leading in the first half to being blown out of Baltimore in the second? Turnovers and silly penalties. Leading 10-7, Ray Lewis blew up Kellen Winslow on a short reception. Winslow was pretty much set up by Anderson, who led him right into Lewis, whose big hit led to [...]

Random thoughts from a wandering mind

September 17, 2008

Item: The Browns had receivers catching footballs with numbers on them.
Evidently the idea is to teach the receivers to focus on the ball. As it approaches they shout out the number. Next week: A lesson on the location of the line of scrimmage.
Item: Gus Frerotte replaces Tarvaris Jackson as Minnesota Vikings quarterback.
I'm thinking that when [...]

First and 10: The Giants started 0-2 last season

September 16, 2008

First and 10
1)      Got an e-mail from a friend who said the best thing that happened Sunday night was that his power went out. He said that enabled him to a) get a good night's sleep and b) not be forced to watch the Browns lose to Pittsburgh. Again.
2)      It's gotten to the point that [...]

The Browns: Decisions, decisions

September 15, 2008

The latest loss to Pittsburgh had barely ended before the e-mails started rolling in.
"I dare you to defend Crennel," one wrote.
"Romeo has got to go," said another.
"When you have the ANNOUNCERS criticizing the coach's decision, it is not good," said a third.
First, announcers make their living criticizing coaching decisions. They can get away with it [...]

One more Buckeye embarrassment

September 13, 2008

Embarrassing. No contest. Not even competitive.
The difference between a very, very, very good college team and the best college team – well it's evident in the Ohio State games against Florida, LSU and now USC. Big games, all of them. National championship games and the biggest of the big regular season games. Ohio State was [...]

The Browns: Knees, muscles and Horns

September 11, 2008

Way back on Aug. 26, I wrote that when a guy has swelling in his knee it usually means a tear of some sort – and typically it’s cartilage. Yes, this is shameless self-promotion, but it took no great genius to say that was Sean Jones’ problem back in preseason. He had swelling on [...]

First and 10: Are we overreacting, or should we be alarmed?

September 9, 2008

First and 10
1)      Nobody wants to overreact to one loss. Dallas is a good team. A very good team. Tony Romo seems to have matured greatly as a quarterback, and he has some very talented targets running around out there. He also has a massive offensive line that dominates the line of scrimmage. That being [...]

Browns lose the opener, and look bad doing it

September 7, 2008

It's really impossible to fathom losing nine of 10 season openers at home. That's an indication that a team is either a) really not very good or b) really not prepared or c) a really not very good and not very prepared or d) really, really unlucky. This Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys were far and [...]

A midweek visit to the Browns as they prepare for Dallas

September 3, 2008

Spent Wednesday at the Browns, talking to a lot of players about Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens. It would be a shock, beyond stunning, beyond astounding if TO does not have a huge day Sunday against the Browns secondary. The Browns can win, but they won't stop Owens, who figures to treat the Browns corners like [...]

First and 10: The season opener (finally) approaches …

September 2, 2008

OK … there's not a lot new from last week, except the final roster, and I talked about that on Saturday. So this week's First and 10 will contain as much Browns news and oh-so-cogent insight as seems relevant, but I reserve the right to discuss other things as well.
Why do I even say that? [...]

Cliff Lee wins his 20th game … and the full moon comes out

September 2, 2008

Watching and talking to Cliff Lee after he won his 20th game Monday night was a bit of a strange experience. First, the Indians had a video on the scoreboard congratulating Lee from Gaylord Perry, the team’s last 20-game winner. This was a good idea. But Perry wore a Giants hat. Odd, no?

Then Lee went [...]
