Pryor commitment

March 20th, 2008 by Ron

Terrelle Pryor hopes to be used like Tim Tebow was when Florida won the national title. And I think Jim Tressel is thinking the same thing. It should be interesting to see if Pryor can develop into a quarterback who can throw the ball. That is why most think that he is more like a young Vince Young, and you know, there is nothing wrong with that.

Another side of Pryor's choice is that Michigan could be in for a long year. RichRod's game plan needs an athletic QB and I am not sure that Michigan has one. Could a below .500 season be in the offing?

Quiet spring

March 12th, 2008 by Ron

The Indians seem to be flying under the radar locally.

The TV, radio and newspapers have continued their normal coverage of a Tribe spring training, but for a team that was one win from the World Series, it seems that not much is at stake.

Maybe it is the Browns' strong offseason or LeBron James, maybe there isn't enough air for everyone. Heck, even the Gladiators are 2-0.

The Indians are close, they can win it all.

But the window of opportunity is open THIS season. This is C.C. Sabathia's likely final season with the Indians.

These thoughts need to be a the forefront of GM Mark Shapiro's head.

I think Shapiro needs to be ready to play whatever chips he has to make trades to fix any holes that develop early. The chips, I see, are the the losers in the No. 5 spot in the rotation, either Lee, Laffey or Sowers. Marte, Choo and Francisco also are trade bait.

I think this team can win the American League this season, but it also can't be a season that Shapiro lets get away early. He needs to be bold and active.

Down year?

March 10th, 2008 by Ron

No area football, boys basketball or girls basketball team played for a state championship. In fact in boys and girls basketball, no teams will make the trip to Columbus.

Is it a sign of the future or just our turn for a down time?

Browns lack of draft

March 7th, 2008 by Ron

The Browns, as has been well documented, don't have first-, second- or third-round draft picks in next month's draft pick.

Now the merits of the trades involving those picks can be argued, but the reality is, they don't have them today.

My question is: should GM Phil Savage work to trade back into the draft, or should he stand pat.

I vote for standing pat. Why put more pressure on the salary cap, when it isn't necessary for this year's team?

Favre and other thoughts

March 6th, 2008 by Ron

– Brett Favre got preferential treatment from the national media during his career but there is no doubt that the NFL is losing a unique athlete with his retirement. His gunslinger mentality was fun to watch, and his joy in playing was infectious. He will be taking his place in Canton in five years.

– Akron and Kent State are locked into the MAC Tournament slots but the game Sunday at Rhodes Arena should give a good feel for how the tournament will turn out next week. Don't count out the Zips, yet.

– The Browns have spent a lot of money and enjoyed a mostly positive view on the national stage for their moves in the free-agent market. The odd thing is with the schedule the teams in the AFC North face. The Browns could go 9-7 and win the division.

– LeBron James' pregame dunk was off the charts Wednesday night in New York. Take a look here at Yahoo! Sports.

– I don't know what is happening more often, snowy weather in Akron or another Penn State football player getting arrested in State College. I just don't know.

– Terrell Pryor, do you have an opinion on JoePa's control of his Nittany Lions program? I guess we will find out that answer is the next few weeks.

Cavs: Day after

February 23rd, 2008 by Ron

The Cavs gained two things, at least, from their mega trade.

1. Playoff experience in Ben Wallace. He has won a championship as a role player. He also can be an enforcer if any team takes liberties with LeBron.

2. Confidence. GM Danny Ferry showed the team that winning a title now, not in a year or two, is a priority. And despite these guys getting paid millions to play, a show of commitment from the front office does motivate pro players in any sport. Want a good example, look at last night's game. Only having two starters and eight total players, they beat the Wizards.

I think this trade should be judged in the playoffs, but at first blush, this was a good one.

Steroids interest?

February 12th, 2008 by Ron

How much do you all want to read about Roger Clemens and steroids?

We go back and forth as to how much room to give this in the paper as it proceeds with Congress.

Tom Brady?

January 23rd, 2008 by Ron

Is Tom Brady really worthy of being considered the best quarterback ever?, or the best football player ever?

I don't think so. Maybe I can't see the forest for the trees but he just doesn't make the cut in my opinion.

I saw an article today on SI.com where Frank Deford wrote that we are seeing three of the greatest athletes ever, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods and Brady.

I think he is off base with Brady being with those two.

Brady is in line to get his fourth Super Bowl trophy in seven seasons next Sunday. Terry Bradshaw got four in six. I do think both are Hall of Famers but neither should be in the same sentence with Dan Marino, John Unitas or John Elway. Brett Favre and Peyton Manning deserve mention, but Brady, I don't think so.

What do you all think?
