Absolute madness

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

It just took one round of the NCAA Tournament for this march to madness to take the turn for the better for two teams.

UCLA and Kansas have the road set up to the Elite Eight. Neither team will face a team better than an eighth seed in the next two rounds.

Upset City: Tampa, Fla., had four upsets on Friday. Two 13 seeds and two 12s won. Talk about bracket busters.

ESPNews said this morning that they had more than 2 million entries on ESPN.com and already there are no perfect brackets.

Enjoy the hoops.

Analyze this …

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

First, I want to start this take by saying that I enjoy reading Jayson Stark of ESPN.com.

But … this morning on the Mike and Mike radio show, it hit that we listen to all of these talking heads like they have some inside knowledge but in reality they really don't.

Stark said the reason that the Indians had turned the series was by throwing first-pitch strikes.

I am not saying this isn't true. In fact, it is very true.

My questions is why would a team not do this in the first place. Is Stark telling us that C.C. Sabathia's and Fausto Carmona's plan in the first two games was to throw first-pitch balls?

Of course not.

The reality is, that Byrd and Westbrook are pitching well right now. Byrd said he threw his first 90 mph fastball of the season last night

Now, I am not saying it is luck but it isn't this great new game plan either.

Right now, the Indians are playing well. Period. And the Red Sox aren't.

Nothing else

Sports journalism

Monday, October 15th, 2007

This is a well-done piece on the state of sports journalism.

And another thing …

Monday, October 8th, 2007

The Cavaliers are doing the right thing. They should not give into the demands of Anderson Varejao or Sasha Pavlovic. … The Indians bullpen is the reason they are where they are, and it will be what decides if they win the World Series or not. … Jamal Lewis being healthy is the difference between 8 wins and 5 or 6 wins for the Browns.

Will any team be undefeated in college football come November? … The Big Ten Network has been a dud. … By the way, that will be the only way to watch the OSU-Kent State game Saturday. … I don't think you will miss much.

Roger Clemens, Cooperstown is calling. It is time to trigger your five-year wait. … Dan O'Dowd of the Rockies and Josh Byrnes of the Diamondbacks; both GMs, also both former members of the Tribe front office. … No wonder the Pirates hired Neal Huntington as GM; the Tribe knows how to grow great front office folks.

Jimmie Johnson or Jeff Gordon? I am pulling for Gordon. … Mike Tirico is everywhere.

Where in the world is Dan Patrick?

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

For those who are fans of Dan Patrick, he will be starting a new show on a radio syndicate Oct. 1. No word, yet, on what stations he will be on this area. He left ESPN last month.

Here is a link to his Web site.

The Price is Right?

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Dan Patrick said on his radio show Monday that he did audition for the Price is Right. Can they seriously hire him?

The LA Daily News reported over the weekend that there are about half a dozen folks in consideration to replace the retired Bob Barker.

Half the people who watch the show, if not more, have no idea who Dan Patrick is.

Forward/backward

Monday, June 25th, 2007

A look back at the weekend and what is ahead:

The Indians can't seem to get their hitting machine rolling. It is now the end of June and Travis Hafner still is not hitting. That is the bad news. The good news is the Tigers are only 2 games ahead and the Indians lead the wild-card race.

Juan Pablo Montoya won the Nextel Cup race in Sonoma, Calif. It was his first win, but more important for NASCAR, it was a minority driver who won the race. With Lewis Hamilton, a black man, winning twice in Formula One, NASCAR has been getting more questions about its minority program. Montoya's win shows NASCAR is making progress.

Does anybody really care to hear about Kobe Bryant every day? Enough already ESPN.

All indications are that Brady Quinn is going to need a lot of work to be of any good to the Browns this season. Now we see why most didn't think he was a high first-round prospect.

The Cavaliers have a lot of value with veteran contracts that are going to expire after next season. In today's NBA, those can be more valuable than gaining a real player.

Ohio State football is being talked about as being the fourth best team in the Big Ten this season behind Wisconsin, Michigan and Penn State. I just don't see Penn State being better than the Buckeyes. The other two should be, but the Badgers will be like the Buckeyes, going with an inexperienced quarterback.

Greg Oden and Kevin Durant or should I say Kevin Durant and Greg Oden. I think Oden will go first, but the NBA, despite the players being on the West Coast, has to be happy that these two will be playing against each other in the same division for years to come.

As for the draft, I think the Cavs will pass on trading into the proceedings.

Paul Tracy, the Canadian driver, continues to race well in Cleveland. Kudos to Tracy.

Wimbledon gets started today …. wake me when it's over. Speaking of Wimbledon, when it was great in the 80s and 90s, we couldn't watch the early rounds because it was on HBO. Now that it is on ESPN, I see no reason to watch.

It doesn't register on most sports fans' radars, but it was good to see the United States win the Gold Cup this weekend, beating Mexico 2-1. It bodes well for Bob Bradley's plan for the National Team.

Questions of me

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Some of the folks commenting want to know why I discuss ESPN as much as I do on this blog.

One reason, they provide the most content on sports on the Internet that they have produced. You can argue that Google News and Yahoo! Sports provide content but much of that is available anywhere and is produced by the Associated Press.

Same goes with TV: I will discuss the broadcasts of TNT and Speed and Fox Sports and Golf Channel and NFL Network, but at the end of the day, ESPN is the top provider of content.

As for news: the New York Times and Washington Post are the present kings online.

So plan on seeing more discussions of shows on ESPN.

And some more …

SportsTime Ohio is barely relevant beside its Tribe broadcasts and FSN is in the same boat beside Cavs games. I would love to see some network take a swing at ESPN on the national level. Comcast and its Versus channel gave it a shot, but the network couldn't secure NFL or MLB rights. It only got the NHL and is doing a great job, but few are watching. FSN has its Best Damn Sports Show and its half hour highlights show but nothing really relevant.

Speed Channel is a godsend for auto racing fans. I would go as far to say that Speed and Fox Sports have made NASCAR a mainstream sport with its excellent coverage and reports. ESPN will have it tough in the second half of this season to measure up to Fox Sports' coverage of NASCAR.

Also with some of this, I defer to George Thomas who provides media coverage for the local radio and TV on Ohio.com and the Beacon Journal.

An inside look at ESPN

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

Le Anne Schreiber is the new public editor for ESPN and her columns appear on ESPN.com. Her first real behind the scenes look at the network is very interesting and sheds some light on the thinking that goes on between SportsCenter and the actual sports that ESPN holds the rights to. Take a look.

Will you watch?

Monday, May 7th, 2007

Major League Baseball will have its draft on TV for the first time, ESPN.com reported.

Anyone going to watch?
