This is a well-done piece on the state of sports journalism.
Our NFL preview will be available Sunday in the Beacon Journal and on Ohio.com.
– Marla Ridenour features the key to the Browns season — running back Jamal Lewis.
– Patrick McManamon looks at what the Browns are terming a "bridge" season.
– Marla also talks to NFL talking heads about what they think of Brady Quinn.
– Patrick gives a quick hit on Sunday in the NFL.
– Marla ranks all 32 NFL teams and picks the weekend games.
Love it or hate it, fantasy football, along with gambling, are what make the NFL the most popular sport in America.
With that in mind, is there anything we can add to Ohio.com or the Beacon Journal to aid fantasy football players? We already run the injury report in the paper along with the box scores and the top news of each day. Online, we add an fantasy football blog.
That might be enough. But we thought we would ask.
Sorry for the break in posts this week. With high school football getting ready to kick off, the office has been busy. Also with the news that Terry Pluto is leaving, that delayed some other things for us.
But no excuses, things are looking good for the Beacon and Ohio.com.
Patrick McManamon should bring a fresh perspective to the columnist role and an edge that I think the readers will like. Marla Ridenour has plenty of experience with pro football and should continue our fine coverage of the Browns.
We hope to make a few more announcements in the coming weeks in our sports section.
Wednesday will bring the high school football preview section and Thursday the high school section Ready, Set, Play starts a new season.
Let us know what you folks think.
We just completed another high school year. We experimented with some new ideas:
1. Ready, Set, Play: a weekly section on high school sports.
2. We started our high school blog: Varsity Letters.
3. Due to space concerns, we limited the amount of space given to us naming all-star teams.
Now we are looking at a couple more things for the fall:
1. More nightly roundups, but less individual game coverage.
2. Even more use of Ohio.com, through blogs, video and audio.
3. Only putting scores in the newspaper, with the boxscores being online.
4. Eliminating high school all-stars altogether. Maybe just naming players of the year.
What suggestions would you have, and what of the previous ideas seems like good ideas?
By the way, Ready, Set, Play will be back next season.
For those who read bylines in the paper: Michael Weinreb, a former Beacon Journal reporter, has an interesting story on ESPN.com today on Yankees pitcher Carl Pavano.
This weekend offers a variety of features.
Terry Pluto's view will be based all on the Browns and the story behind their draft and what the future might hold.
Patrick McManamon is writing several pieces including a column from Browns minicamp.
Sheldon Ocker will have his normal fare of Sunday column, mailbag and game coverage.
We also will have wire reports on the Kentucky Derby, the NASCAR race from Richmond and the De La Hoya-Mayweather throwdown from Las Vegas.
Also depending on what the Nets do Friday night with the Raptors, we will have a full breakdown of the series from Brian Windhorst and an NBA scout.
Where do you get most of your sports news online? Do you go to the major providers such as ESPN, AOL and Yahoo!, or is it the local views of Ohio.com or Cleveland.com?
Would you like an e-mail each morning with what is new on the Ohio.com sports site?
What about a breaking news blog on Ohio.com with scoring updates and other news?
What is missing or what would like more of on Ohio.com?
Let us know what you guys are thinking.
There is plenty of Browns, Cavaliers and Indians material on Ohio.com and in the Beacon Journal this weekend.
On the site now you'll find Patrick McManamon's prediction that Joe Thomas will become the Browns' left tackle today. He picks the rest of the draft, too.
Sunday, look for Terry Pluto's analysis of the Browns draft and also the Cavs' performance in Game 3. Brian Windhorst also will provide coverage of Game 3 from Washington, D.C.
Nate Ulrich will be filing reports on each of the Browns selection Saturday, and that will be posted immediately after each selection on Ohio.com. George Thomas will be blogging on the draft all day. So as you watch the NFL Network and ESPN coverage of the draft take a look for Thomas' take, too.
Sheldon Ocker examines the Indians' possible problems of too many platoons, as he continues to cover the home series with the Baltimore Orioles.
Here is a quick rundown of the top sports stories on Ohio.com.
Patrick McManamon rates past drafts and how teams fared in using top five picks.
Marla Ridenour shows just how much Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is pushing Brady Quinn on the Browns.
Terry Pluto wants to discuss other topics, but he says most fans only care about the draft.
Brian Windhorst gives great insight in just how far scouting goes in preparing for the NBA playoffs. Make sure you have a notebook handy when reading this story. Also Brian is going to blog during Game 1 today.
Sheldon Ocker enters the world of geo-politics with his mailbag and his past two Sunday insider columns.
