Personally, one of the things I like to do when it comes to the Olympics and other international competitions is cheer for the smaller, extreme underdog countries. Most of these athletes never get mentioned because they don't compete at the very top level. They are still, however, living a dream and frequently have all the odds stacked against because of reasons beyond their control (practice facilities, money, quality coaching, etc...).

Therefore, I have always wanted to see someone just do some profiles of the out of the spotlight countries and/or athletes to help capture the overall spirit of the Games.

You ain't kiddin, larry.

By the way, speaking of both Windhorst (and Thomas' disappearing blog), I'm presuming that Thomas will be assigned the Cavs beat on a temporary basis. Hopefully, Thomas will be able to quickly develop some sources that can intentionally mislead him as badly as Windhorst's sources intentionally mislead Windhorst. I still can't get over that one 24-carat source of Windhorst's that lied to him for over three freakin' years about James' Nike contract. And what's even more amazing, Windy probably still continued and will continue to use that same liar as a source.

But I digress.

Hey, Ron, what's the deal with Thomas' blog? You guys originally held the poor guy at gunpoint and made him get a blog to drive traffic to the site. Now you guys have had a complete change of heart and allowed him to rid himself of his blog? What's that all about???

And please tell me why you can't pass a collection plate around the newsroom to be able to send Thomas to China. Or maybe post something on Craigslist and accept donations.

Still no answer to my first post, so I'm going to assume the Beacon Journal is going to only "lease" stuff from outside writers to cover the summer Olympics.

Tom Reed was sent to the winter Olympics to cover ice dancing and whatever, are you telling me the Beacon Journal doesn't have the budget to even send one guy? Come on.

Actually, what local athletes *are* in the Olympics? I don't even consider James to be a "local athlete." Please. That's like living in a Spanish village and calling Picasso "the local artist." What AMATEUR local athletes are in the Olympics?

I'd love to see the local athletes that are participating on the front page. They've worked for years for this. And with school levies being turned down and the economy down, we need some good news about our youth.

Am I right to assume the Beacon Journal doesn't have the budget to send over a guy or two to China? Or are we going to be treated to wire service and syndicated retreads.

Heck, pool some local office resources together and send over Thomas. Evidently his Beacon Journal blog has already been deemed to be extinct, give the guy something to cover besides that evil big bad Big Ten Network.

Is there going to be any Amazon chick softball or ballroom dancing at this Olympics? Give George the order to cover it.
