Changing name for The Jake?

Posted September 20th, 2007 by Ron

Sheldon Ocker reported today that the Indians are investigating national companies' interests in buying the naming rights to Jacobs Field.

Dick Jacobs' contract ran out at the end of last season. According to the report, the Indians have been underwhelmed with local companies' offers.

Do fans really care about what the name is on the stadium? The Houston Astros have had numerous names on their stadium — Enron Field, Astros Park, Minute Maid Park. So have the San Francisco Giants: Pac Bell Park and AT&T Park.

Any ideas of companies you all would be interested in putting their name on the stadium. I am surprised local companies with national reaches have been slow to move. Smuckers Stadium? Goodyear Park? Firestone Field? National City Park?

What about Dan Gilbert's Palace? Wait, that should be the name of the Cavs practice facility.

Call me an old geezer, but it's just a darn shame that sports stadiums and arenas aren't known by the same name for their entirety. I still call Cleveland's arena "Gund Arena", and everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Would it be so bad to keep the name "Jacobs Field" and allow excessive signage for whatever company buys the rights? How can you build tradition when it changes every 10 years or so? I think the Browns did it the right way, but I'm not looking forward to attending Opening Day 2008 at Insert Name and Money Here Ballpark.

    How about "QuickenForeclosures Field"?

The media lapdogs could nickname it "The Fork."

Speaking of the Cavs' shiny new practice facility (with lots of shiny new executive offices), why don't you order one of your writers to actually write something very substantive and very important. Like how the owners of Cleveland's NBA franchise methodically raped, pillaged and plundered the City of Cleveland in order to build what you refer to as "Dan Gilbert's Palace?" Or would writing something extremely pointed and critical about the wealthy and the powerful egregiously violate the local media's Unwritten Code?

Windy has much better things to do, alan.

He has been holed up in the basement of the palace, where Ferry and the Cavs PR Director have been prepping him for his upcoming book tour.
