Football galore and plenty more

Sorry for the break in posts this week. With high school football getting ready to kick off, the office has been busy. Also with the news that Terry Pluto is leaving, that delayed some other things for us.
But no excuses, things are looking good for the Beacon and Ohio.com.
Patrick McManamon should bring a fresh perspective to the columnist role and an edge that I think the readers will like. Marla Ridenour has plenty of experience with pro football and should continue our fine coverage of the Browns.
We hope to make a few more announcements in the coming weeks in our sports section.
Wednesday will bring the high school football preview section and Thursday the high school section Ready, Set, Play starts a new season.

I'll give you that much … McManamon will bring a fresh perspective. I'm curious how thorough his knowledge is of other sports outside of football. I guess we'll find out. His newsletter shows he's got a writer's sense of wry humor, so that's a plus. But please, just do all the readers this very simple favor: If McManamon *EVER* refers to Jesus Christ in a printed column, take away his car keys and give them to Windhorst.
Now you've really got me wondering what additional big announcements you're going to make. Is Jewell Cardwell the new guy on the NASCAR beat? Is Tom Reed making a triumphant return as your new boss? Is George Thomas the new BJ editorial cartoonist? Is Marla Ridenour going to reveal that she's a dude?

Doesn't that last line of the first paragraph above tell you everything you need to know about the despicable person. He wastes so much space here and on other blogs, and just confirms over and over that he is a pathetic excuse for a human being.
On a much happier note, the Browns saw the future last night, and it's here now (despite the above serial-commentator's inane assertion that Quinn wouldn't even know the plays…how moronic). Why waste any more time with Derek? Let Frye take the inital Steeler beating, but if Romeo is true to his word and the guy who "gives the Browns the best chance of winning" will play, I believe we all saw who that was last night.
And before A.T. even begins his drivel…if Brady Quinn is not better than any of the other 3 QBs we have now, then we wasted a draft choice. If he IS better, let's take the kid-gloves off and play the guy. It was the only entertaining part of the game, and isn't it all about providing entertainment for paying fans? In this instance, give us what we want.

Sean, you're absolutely right. Sports columnists that simultaneously write religion columns are what sports fans look for when they want hard-hitting, realistic opinions from the sports columnists in their local papers. I'm sure since 1997, when Terry Pluto became a devout Christian, the fact that God is omnipresent and always peeking over his shoulder has never once clouded his judgment in his sports column.
And thank you for your civil, gracious, intelligent and informed opinion about me. It would seem to be a little bit un-Christian to refer to another as "a despicable person" and "a pathetic excuse for a human being," but hey, I'm no Christianity maven, so maybe I'm wrong.

I wouldn't worry about how another poster refers to you, Alan. After your remark at the top, you need to be much more concerned about what a higher power thinks about you, and it couldn't possibly be very highly.

I have to be concerned about what a higher power thinks about me? Why, did I piss off Dan Gilbert? I'm not worried, my mortgage is through Countrywide, not Quicken.

Just wanted to let you know your doing a great job with the sports section online and in the newspaper. I am really enjoying McManamon columns.
Also the blogs are a great addition to ohio.com.
Keep up the great work.
