Doing donuts

The Indy 500 has lost a lot of its luster the past 10 years. And NASCAR has left it so far in the dust, I don't think it will ever catch up.

But the new qualifying procedures were fun to watch Saturday and the drama of Helio Castroneves winning the pole for the May 27 race was exciting and made for great TV.

Kudos to the IRL and its IndyCar Series for experimenting with ways to get fans interested again.

I can't fathom I'm the only Beacon Journal reader who didn't have a clue, until this very moment, that the Indy 500 has absolutely nothing to do with NASCAR.

I am intrigued about Helio Castroneves. Did he really win the pole position? Wow, talk about a guy that wears many hats! How does a professional astronomer discover rings of Uranus, but still manage to find the time to race his car?

Is that the north pole or south?
