Weekend rewind

Posted May 7th, 2007 by Ron

The Cavs have a plan, and they followed it perfectly in Game 1. It is amazing when you have a plan and stick to it how far it can take you. Now to win a title, I think the offense might need to get a little better. But there is nothing saying that that can't happen this year.

The Browns drew media from all over to cover Brady Quinn's presence at minicamp. I will say it again. Phil Savage was desperate when he made the move for Quinn, and now he is going to be under more scrutiny than every before.

We often talk about windows of opportunity in sports. Well, the Indians' window is wide open, and they need to follow C.C. Sabathia right through it this year. C.C. is on track for his first Cy Young and probably will become the first $20 million per season pitcher in history after completing his deal next season. The Tribe's window might be just this season because all of the talk next season will center on C.C. and his contract status.

Jimmie Johnson and Tiger Woods won again. No surprises with either. Again, having a plan and following through. It does work, if you have the right plan.

Why does the media foster such outrageous crap like "the first $20-million pitcher?" That is just ridiculous, idotic nonsense…and any team who gives in to that line of thinking (such as the Yankees, who, for the record, just gave Clemens $28-million for one season, blowing your argument) is just asking to go bankrupt. Let's see, what did CC win last year, 13 or 14 games? I'd give the ball to Adam Miller right now and expect close to the same result—all for the major league minimum.

For the Tribe to stay competitive as a TEAM, they will have to let CC go, hopefully in a trade for value, then go with an impressive young rotation of Westbrook, Lee, Carmona, Miller and Sowers. What's wrong with that picture? Seems a lot like Atlanta starting out with a young group, and keeping them together for a long while. Also, Lofgren is coming quick at Akron, and there are other depth arms at Buffalo.

Atlanta's group was enhanced quite a bit by Greg Maddux, a free agent they signed for pretty good dollars back then, I'd bet. I'd bet they paid Smoltz and Glavine decently for a few years too.

Carmona, Sowers and Miller are promising, but they really don't compare to C.C. when he was their age. Considering his age, and the fact that he hasn't reached his peak years yet, C.C. might be building a HOF career.
