AL Central mojo

Posted May 4th, 2007 by Ron

Two years ago, the Chicago White Sox could do no wrong.
Last season, it was the Detroit Tigers.
It seems that the Tribe has picked up right there. The Indians aren't playing great baseball but they are winning.
As long as the bullpen holds up, the Tribe might be able to stay at the top all season.

Nice theory, except…is the bullpen really "holding up?" How many times already this season have Fultz, Hernandez and Borowski crashed and burned? It's like gasoline and fire with those guys, esp. the first two.

Until his most recent outing, Jason Davis had been lights-out…but Wedge has seemingly forgotten him. Cabrera and Mastny have been the most reliable, and hopefully Miller will be added to the mix soon. Surely Mastny cannot be the "odd man out" and sent to Buffalo. If the Tribe is serious about having the best 25-man roster, instead of playing patty-cake with egos and veterans, Fultz needs to go. Just look at his numbers vs. lefties…he can't get them out. So what good IS he? Betancourt better watch his P's and Q's, too, because his middle name is "Inconsistency."

Ahh, crap. Bill's point is well illustrated tonight. Pick your poison with those horrible backend of the bullpen stiffs. Betancourt cost Byrd the win tonight, and of the 8 losses in this yound season, AT LEAST half have been the fault of those pen guys. And even in the Tribe wins, there has been some very shaky work. Look how many runs those pitchers let in. Sure the relievers have low ERAs, but they're letting in run after run. And Wedge just keeps sending those ineffective guys right back out there. It'll be the death of his job.
