Should they stay or should they go?

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Greg Oden leaving for the NBA is no shock at all. In fact, it would be bigger news if he was staying. As for Daequan Cook and Mike Conley Jr., they should be staying at Ohio State.

I am all for these guys leaving for the money. Everyone else would, and we aren't talking about a $30,000 job either. First-round picks are guaranteed millions. I just don't see Cook as a first-rounder. Conley, if he continues to get better, could be a top 10 selection, but in this deep draft, he might be a second-rounder, which means no guarantees.

Coming this weekend

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Here is what to look for in the Beacon Journal and on Ohio.com this weekend.

A Cavaliers preview section in the edition Saturday and more insight from Brian Windhorst in the Sunday paper before Game 1's tipoff at 12:30 p.m. at the Q

Patrick McManamon shows just how tough it is to hit on a pick in the top five of the NFL Draft. And everyone knows the Browns are still waiting for their first bit of luck.

Marla Ridenour examines the career of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn.

Sheldon Ocker will have his usual Sunday fare: a weekly look at the Indians plus game coverage from Tampa Bay.

Tom Gaffney has an interesting feature on the winner of the Caraboolad Award, given to a top area high school coach.

Marla also will be in Columbus to see if anyone steps up to take Troy Smith's spot as quarterback of Ohio State.

Coverage of the NASCAR race Saturday night in Phoenix, too.

Enjoy.

Top of the morning

Friday, April 20th, 2007

ESPN is continuing to look for the right recipe for its morning brew. Cold Pizza has been under constant construction since it started and now the name and location are getting thrown out.

On May 7, Cold Pizza will become ESPN First Take. Jay Crawford and Dana Jacobson will still host the show, but it will be back in Bristol, Conn., with the rest of the ESPN studios. It also will have 1st and 10 segments with two commentators from a pool that includes Skip Bayless, as well as Stephen A. Smith, Patrick McEnroe and Jemele Hill. The show will continue to be shown on ESPN2.

ESPN First Take (airing live from 10 a.m.-noon and repeated from noon-2 p.m.) will be televised in high definition. The HD will come to ESPN2's simulcast of ESPN Radio's Mike and Mike in the Morning, which is on from 6-10 a.m.

ESPN also said that Mike and Mike and ESPN First Take will have sports updates with Sage Steele. The morning repeats of SportsCenter will have a rundown graphic like they have for the draft to tell viewers what's coming next.

Blue Jackets move

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

It seems to be long past due but the Columbus Blue Jackets fired Doug MacLean on Thursday.

MacLean, their team president and general manager, and the franchise have struggled for many years, but it seemed instead of getting fired MacLean kept getting more titles.

There are truly talented players on the Blue Jackets, but much like the Browns, they don't seem to know how to find their way up the standings.

In the paper?

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

It is no secret that the print-side of all media companies are struggling and that is the case with the Beacon Journal, too. That means we are constantly weighing what should be in the paper, what should be added and what should be eliminated given the restrictions on our resources (space, people).

Here is how it works: We are given a specific amount of space (columns in newspaper talk) each year. Rich Desrosiers (the sports editor) and I then break that down over the entire year. For example, we put more space into NFL Draft weekend and then take space away from some of the summer months.

This all brings me to these questions: The agate (the small results type), do you guys read that in the paper or online or do you not care at all? Also, what should go first, the items on page 2 (minor-league standings, golf, bowling, tennis) or should we eliminate the NBA, NHL, NFL and baseball box scores?

What we want to do is make the paper look better and to be open to more local stories, but as I said the space isn't changing.

Cavs in playoffs

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

The Washington Wizards in the first round. For the Cavs to go deep into this postseason, I see this series having to go no more than five games.

You know the NBA is happy that the Heat and Cavs aren't against each other, yet. The league did not want to lose LeBron or Shaq/D-Wade after one round. It is still possible but very unlikely.

International dating line

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Major League Soccer has had a mixed bag as far as its adventures in signing foreign players. They mainly have been over-the-hill players looking to make their last few dollars before they call it a career.

New rules allowed the Galaxy to sign David Beckham and now the Columbus Crew have joined in.

According to SI.com, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a skilled Argentine midfielder, signed a one-year deal with the Crew.

Their analysis thinks Schelotto will provide more scoring chances for strikers Jason Garey and Andy Herron. And he can help bring along promising Eddie Gaven. So far the Crew is 0-0-2, both games being 0-0 draws.

Fantasy nightmare

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

We all know that Vince Young was one of the better players in the NFL at the end of last season. All of his talent says he will go high in fantasy drafts come late summer. But with the latest news about VY, what do you do.

Oh, you didn't hear.

Mr. Young has been chosen for the honored (or should I say jinxed) place on the cover of Madden NFL '08.

These seven players — Eddie George, Dante Culpepper, Marshall Faulk, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis, Donovan McNabb and Shaun Alexander — also have been on the cover and also have been injured during that season, and their careers have taken a turn for the worse.

So, now where does VY get chosen in fantasy drafts?

How about that?

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

Just yesterday, I wrote that the NBA should publicize their punishments or fines for officials. Guess what they did today? David Stern and the Association announced that official Joey Crawford was suspended indefinitely — at least through the playoffs.

Kudos. It shows the public that not only the players and coaches are held accountable for their actions.

Pat Forde of ESPN has a good column on the subject that would interest Ohio State fans, too.

Strange but true

Monday, April 16th, 2007

I received this memo recently from a local college as a reminder about football.

Please remember, the NCAA has new terminology for its football playing schools in Division I

Effective Dec. 26, 2006, the labels NCAA I-A, I-AA and I-AAA were deleted from NCAA use.

Previous Name – New Name

NCAA Division I-A (I-A) – Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS)

NCAA Division I-AA (I-AA) – Football Championship Subdivision (FCS)

NCAA Division I-AAA (I-AAA) – Division I

Also, any use of the I-AA will be referred to as NCAA Division I Football Championship

So, this is what the NCAA does with all of its money. The top teams from the FBS play in the BCS to win the NCAA title. Imagine if there were more than 26 letters in the alphabet.
